I voted Batman. In all seriousness, if someone would name their kid Batman, this would happen:

Able to!

YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

OT: Beyond naming children curse words, I fail to see what interest the state has in this. Then again, it could just be NZ law.
That's the worst possible pun I cain think of.

It's a really, really bad idea. It's only a couple steps up from calling your kid "Beelzebub".

If it's banned, this doesn't bother me, as it saves dumb parents from wrecking their kids' lives early on (and there are parents that dumb, I read about a Jewish couple who named their child "Adolf Hitler" in order to "reclaim the name").

I'll be honest. If I ever have a son, he's going to be named Melchior. Which is the name of one of the three wise men. That has no barring on it, I just think it's cool sounding.

But "Bub" is such a cute nickname.

Though I believe in choice, I think it's unwise to called their kid Lucifer.
Think about the bullying the kid might have to face with such a name. Even though it does mean "Light-Bringer," the name has a connection with Satan and well, it does seem inappropriate.

On the other hand, Batman.

Touche. But then, isn't "Bub" normally used in aggressive circumstances?

I see where you're coming from but I have to say yes you should ban certain names. I think people in general nowadays are given too much leway with everything. Lets not forget that for evey kid named "god thunder bringer" that is actually a badass theres 500 that just want to flip another burger or program some more code or wash the next car in peace without having to endure the mockery. I personally think that if you want what I consider a silly name change it yourself when youre old enough. All that said it's kinda naive to think that a significant number of people will know the obscure meaning of lucifer as opposed to the commonly one known one, the devil. People forget that children are not our property or toys that we can play with and decorate to our hearts content. They're blessings and should be treated as such not as toys that we can mess with and when they get old simply say "can I get another one."

My Mum is a preschool teacher in NZ and quite frankly the new generation is getting shat on before it's even out the starting blocks.
This is because of indignant, self rightious assholes thinking they're original by calling their kids um "unique" names.
these include but are not limited to:
River
Holden Utility
Lyric
Justuss
Seven
Ceven <-WTF?
Winterbear and his sister:
Rytchaus Dawn
etc

Quite frankly Lucifer is alrigtht compared to these "names"

That's crazy talk! Lucifer is a bad-arse name. I mean, it may carry some weirdness, but probably the same as calling a kid Dante, or Mohammed, or any number of names with religious leanings.
Mohammed is actually a really common name, and a ton of names common in the Western world have their roots in Christianity.

I, personally, feel bad for a friend's cousin who was named "Grendel" because their parents totally didn't do any research.

But yeah, with Lucifer having multiple meanings and New Zealand being secular, I feel it should pass.
Though I would definitely question the parents who named their child as such...

Still, no Baron or Duke?
Why no titular names?
I mean, I get it, but I don't get it.
Funny really. I had to deal with this in the UK, and it's surprisingly easy to change your name to just about anything you like. But the passport office can tend to be quite difficult if the name sounds like some kind of joke.
They do allow you to use a title such as 'duke', 'lord', 'sir' or something like that in your name too, although again they may ask questions and obviously they make note that if you have it as part of your name it doesn't imply any kind of status that might go with that title.

For all that permissiveness though, calling yourself or your child Jesus isn't allowed in the UK...

you should be allowed to call you kid anything. "oh but some names could be offensive to others!"
i reckon the entire world needs a nice big shot of "suck it up, princess!" right to the spine
Are you going to tell that to your children when they get bullied incessantly for their name? "Suck it up, Yahoo!" (and yes, a kid in Eastern Europe has honestly been named that).

I'm sorry but with genuine idiots being out there I think it's the duty of the government to reject the most stupid names some parents come up with, if only for the sake of saving the child a lifetime of torment and pestering, they shouldn't pay for the idiocy of their parents.

If it wasn't, it sure is ever since Wolverine's been around.

its not that it could offend people its just that its really not suitable not one is honsestly going to hate it for religious reasons, they'll just going to think its stupid, also it can limit the childs future as the name has a bit of stigma to it, I mean what if the child wants to work at a bank or something and has to have a nameplate with that on it............though it could be slightly hillaruious

I answered yes because of the right to free speech and expression, but I want to say no because even without negative religious connotations, a kid with a name like that would get ludicrous amounts of shit for basically just being alive.

i dont think they should be able to. a name like that i would think would only lead to issues for the kid at school, work later in life.

like naming your kid tina when there last name is turner
or making there middle names hannah montana.

names arent that important but some names i can only see leading to issues for the kids and should be discouraged

Just to piss people off, I'm gonna call my kid "Lucifer Dante the Second", and move to New Zealand, and make him assist the most religious school in all the region, feed him steroids, dye his hair black, make him wear red contact lenses and teach him to swear in Latin.

PRICE-LESS.
That's a lot of work for trolling. I salute you!

OT: Can you name a girl Lilith [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith]? Because if so, they need to rethink this. I can understand not allowing you to name your kid Judge, but Lucifer? Why? Just don't allow them to name their kid Satan.
IMO I find Lilith to be a very pretty name for a girl since it means Night. Naming a kid Judge is only cool if you have a badass last name like Dread or BATMAN. Lucifer just means light giver most people just know him my his other names Satan, Bugaboo, Beelzebub. Even in Atlus' Megaten games they make all of them a different character.
