So apparently in New Zealnd they're cracking down on crazy names for babies.

The Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages seems to be trying to curb a lifetime of inevitable taunting for the children of parents who wanted to rather than give them names, give them punctuation symbols like:

. (Full Stop), * (Asterisk) and / (presumably "Slash")

In the past two years there have been 102 rejected names, including Baron, Bishop, Duke, General, Judge, Justice, King, Knight and Mr, all deemed too similar to titles. Messiah also got the thumbs down. The number 89, and the letters, C, D, I and T saw the same fate
All of that kind of makes sense. But apparently "Lucifer" is also banned. Which I find odd. It's a "real" name and an old name, got a good meaning "Light-bringer", "Morning-star" and can be shorted to "Luc". It's also a name for Venus.

Certainly I wouldn't call my kid it, but New Zealand is a secular nation right? So religion shouldn't play any part in this. It's largely different from say calling your kid "Adolf Hitler" whose deeds are real and horrific, as (not trying to start a religious debate but) to many in the world it would be basically a fictional name. Even to me and I'm a christian, but lucifer and the concept of the devil are very minimal in the bible itself.

As for being mocked? How is it worse than Francis or Reginald? No offense meant to the Franks and Reggies in the house. But I knew guys with those names who got mocked constantly. Now Lucifer Jones, that's a badass name, it says the kid rides bikes without a helmet and plays by nobody's rules.

Honestly if it comes to the choice between Lucifer and J'Dynne (Jaden), I want to ban the later (yeah I know Reductio ad absurdum).

What do you guys think? Should it be banned? Should any names be banned?

wait, ppl got made fun of for having the name francis or reginald?

Wow..our ancestors are horrible troll's still stuck in beta i guess...

anyways, I don't see any problem with it, and If I was the parents i would make the first name "Luce" (prounounced luce for girl and luke for guy) and then the middle name "Ifer" just to troll on them.

Still, no Baron or Duke?
Why no titular names?
I mean, I get it, but I don't get it.
Some I understand, ranks like General or legal titles like Judge or Justice. But New Zealand doesn't have any Dukes or Barons (disregarding it's ties to the UK) so it's not like it'd cause any confusion.

That doesn't make any sense! Lucy was the guy's name before he went bad.
I thought he was Sammael (spelling?) before he fell.
Judge is a somewhat uncommon, but not unheard of name. For instance, the actor Judge Reinhold from Beverly Hills Cop 1/2/3.

Justice is more common than one might think. It rose to popularity in the US between 1992 and 1995, and has remained in the top 400 names since.

I think they should be able to name the kid pretty much any name they want. Duke was a common name at one point at least in some other English speaking countries.
I think I may be biased because I intend to name my first born Chaos with normal middle name to use as a nickname if they want. They may get some crap when they're young but once they hit their teens that name will be bad ass.
And if twins, call one Order.

Just because the nation is secular, it doesn't mean that the people are. Lucifer has a lot of bad connotations and it makes sense to me that a gov't wouldn't let people name their kid after the devil.

Eh...if someone wants to call themselves that...it'd make them a sad pretentious wanker, probably the sort of emo other emos pretend don't exist, but they should be able to do it.

If parents want to lumber their child with something which, to be honest, is going to make their life more difficult for no good reason...yeah, I can see the state not liking that too much.

I'll be honest. If I ever have a son, he's going to be named Melchior. Which is the name of one of the three wise men. That has no barring on it, I just think it's cool sounding.
If you have two more sons after that, is one of them going to be named "Caspar"? Poor kid.

Mind you, Melkior or Balthasar aren't going to be such great names for people living in the real world either.

Satan! Oh, I mean GOD daaaaaamn it.

Wait, so it Adolf banned as well? Can I combine say, Adolf and Lucifer to make Adifer or Luciolf? Can his/her middle name be Lucifer? There are a lot of questions I need answers too before I'd ever move to New Zealand.

I probably wouldn't name my kid Lucifer but it's a nice name. And I'm more kindly disposed toward Lucifer as a character after hearing a song a troubadour acquaintance of mine wrote about him.

If you want names that will get you the shit kicked out of you at school, this website collects some awesome Utah names: [link]http://wesclark.com/ubn/[/link]. There are some beauts in there; like "Bridger A-10", "Vernal Independence" and "Speedy Esther". Do you think the kid called "Starbuck" had a parent who liked BSG? Either that or they really like their coffee...

I think the duty of the government should be to stop the mockery and provide school places free of bullying and namecalling. The government shouldn't be concerned with limiting the freedoms of its people to name their own children. I don't know NZ law at all but if there is a separation of church and state then telling someone they can't name their child a religious name is discrimination.
So rather than nipping idiocy in the bud you'd try and control a bunch of hyperactive five to fifteen year olds into behaving like model citizens... do you even remember your own school days?
How will the government completely stop bullying in schools and workplaces other than becoming a nanny state? Which, y'know, will limit freedoms even more.

How about calling your kid Your Honour?

Can't say I'm against restrictions for naming your children.
Penis, ****, Poop, Asshole, Shit, Snot are all inapropriate for obvious and more globally accepted reasons. [sub] inapropriate or inappropriate? correct me if I'm wrong [/sub]

Where the line is drawn just differs per region I guess, how acceptable is the name Jesus in NZ, for instance? A lot less than it is in Hispanic regions, I reckon.

I've grown up with a Christian background, and I think Lucifer is a badass name.

I'm for it because people having the name as famous people/mythological creatures gives us great quotes from them, such as this:
There was apparently a US soldier during the time of World War Two who was also named Adolf Hitler. When asked if he was going to change his name, he replied "let the other guy change his name."
