I say New York, but really where ever the top space program wants it to be. Looking like it is moving toward private, maybe.

Needs to be on the moon. That way its far removed from every one.
Nevermind my previous post, this is a better idea. It would give the countries with the largest volume of traffic the most power, though, and really leave smaller countries behind.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see my post, thought Lazzi's was in between mine.

I picked Other.

Why?

I just think that if we did unite the planet under one government, we'd create a whole new city to be the capital, much like what happened down here in Australia. Rather than give in to the demands of Sydney and Melbourne to make either of those the capital, a new state was made to house a new city: Canberra.

I'd rule out the US and China, as both are geographically removed from the greatest accumulation of industrial countries, that being Europe. Eurocentrism is, for better or worse, still a pretty dominant view, so Brussels or Geneva or a city in another, possibly traditionally neutral European country might work. Or Paris, which has historically been sort of a capital of western culture, but then again, that was until a hundred years ago, so maybe not...

London. Why? Because I'm quite the nationalist. I could list other reasons, but they don't make London any better than any other city. It's just the capital of my country, therefore it should be the capital of the world.
Fuck, if an American says something like this they get bashed to death with a fucking 500 pound stone.
Not if they said it the way I did. There's a certain arrogance that comes with American patriotism that people really dislike. If they recognised that their city isn't actually any better than any other city then they'd be seen as rational and patriotic rather than arrogant.

I'd say New York, because that's where the UN headquarters are. Either that or a new city-state gets created, in which case my vote is for Atlantis.

I'd have to say Geneva, purely for the symbolism of neutrality.
Plus, imagine negociations appeased by delicious, delicious chocolate.

Depends on politics at the time. Probably Geneva if it happened right now.

London dosn't make sense for being a world capital, it's too small and it's separated from the rest of the world by water.

I agree. I'm just being a realist cynical about our chances at achieving a united world.
Believe me, I'm just as cynical, and extending a hand of peace probably won't unite the world. Just saying that invading and suppressing all countries is not Uniting, and a world of potential war is better than a world of definite oppression.

This conversation is so on topic.

The internetz.

By the time the wold unites, if that ever happens, i think we're way past the need to group stuff together in one physical place.
Screen wall conference rooms, if not hologram stuff sould be more than enough.
Also makes it impossible to target the entire world government with one attack, sinc ethey're spread out across the globe.

Would also remove the need for arguing whether teh country that got it was most important or not.

If a physical location should be chosen... somewhere where there's no seismic activity to take note of, no earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamies, or other natural disaster stuff that can screw up their work. No blizzards thats make them unable to get to work or anything.

Mabe the moon, seeing how people across teh world are so used to living by teh rules of some leader high up in the sky...

I'm Inclined to vote for Berlin. It is towards the center of the European continent (not absolute middle obviously), it is stolid and organized. Horrifyingly Prussian, is basically the impression that I got. To me, it would make a marvelous capital since a capital has to be organized, clean, ready to reinvent itself and able to assert control through peaceful means. (Have you ever been yelled at in German? Its very assertive and motivating.)

I voted ultimately for London however. Historically, they did rule 1/4 of the planet from there, so it just seems to follow they could rule the other 3/4's if motivated.
Berlin? Organised? Clean? I take it you've never been...

Berlin has a horrid crime rate, is run by incompetent communists, and generally doesn't feel like a city. As a German, it pains me to say this, but Paris would be a far better choice.
Oh I've been. It has a lower crime rate than New York (as one of the other listed options). As for Paris, maybe when the Seine stops smelling so god awful! I do agree with you on the problems with the management of Berlin. But I assume in a new world order run from there, we could just have them all shot :)

Shanghai. 21 million people: a centre for world economy. Great public transport... 2 hours from where I live.
Yeah, but a world capitol should have a certain reputation and fame about it.

When people thing "World's most well known cities" they think things like Tokyo, London, and NYC
Shanghai is on the exact same level as Tokyo, NYC and London in terms of world fame.
No way, when people think "most famous cities" there is NO WAY they think of NYC first as often as they think of Shanghai first.
Do you realise that you just confirmed that Shanghai is thought of as a 'famous world city' MORE than NYC?

I understand that you wanted to have the opposite effect, so I will respond as just.

Just because you don't consider Shanghai as a famous world city, doesn't mean other people in other parts of the world don't. Take for example the several billions of people in the so called 'eastern hemisphere'. They don't fuck around with naming western cities, just as westerners don't name many eastern cities bar Tokyo.
Ok yeah, that was a major fail in my post, lol.

But when I think of "most notable cities" Tokyo is right there in my top 5, whereas Shanghai doesn't even register on the radar. I don't think it has to do with being a Westerner, otherwise Tokyo would be as low on my list as Shanghai.

Just look at the poll, there's a reason Shanghai is so far behind Tokyo (by which I mean barely anyone has posted "Shanghai" as their "other)
