So as you all no doubt have heard at some point today "Gary Coleman died".

I really have grown to hate the days when a celebrity dies; I feel like I can't click on any webpage without seeing some mention of it, and a lineup of followers commenting about it.

What really bothers me I think is how people get "saddened" over it.

I ask you all honestly, why do you get sad when a celebrity dies? I feel nothing but indifference.

I never knew the person. Most of the time they have contributed less to society than a random person in the obituary section of my newspaper. Often they aren't even people we have a nostalgic attachment too.

You see it all the time, and the worst is when there is someone whom we insult while they are alive and then praise when they die (Michael Jackson).

I have nothing against any celebrity that dies really, and I don't wish death upon any of them. But I don't know them. I don't care about them. I honestly don't care about them when they are alive and I don't care about them now that they are dead. So if you do, then I ask:

H-Why?

Well I'm always sad that another human being dies. I may not have known them personally, but I do hop that they don't have any regrets while they lived.

Celebrities are no better than an average person, and it angers me that people weep for them just because they're rich.

Most of the time celebrities only contribute shitty songs or movies, and there are people doing more important things than that who go ungrieved.

The moment can be sad, but my ability to feel empathy is tied to my attachment tot he person in question. With celebrities there is no attachment, so it is much like reading the obituaries in the newspaper, sad, but with little depth of emotion.

I will say I have been saddened by the death of fictional people from stories as I do develop attachments to them, and sometimes they remind me of people in my life and those I have lost in the past.

Gary Coleman died today and not a fuck was given in my house.

This has been pretty true for just about every celebrity that has died in the past year.

I'm a little annoyed that you didn't leave one "Yes, I do feel bad for them" option on your poll that didn't have some sort of insult to it.

Yes, I feel sad if a celebrity I liked died. I may not have ever known them, but who says I can't mourn the loss of a talented person?

But I do admit, insulting a person while they're alive, then acting like you were their biggest fan once they're gone is pretty ridiculous.

EDIT: But yeah, that only applies to celebrities I liked. If I barely ever glanced at anything they did, it's unlikely I'll give more than a glance to mention of their death.

Only if I genuinely care about what that person did in life. Since that is a very small number, I am rarely interested in the death of celebrities.

They live and die like the rest of us do, except bigger and more high-profile.

It also amuses me that, as of voting, the graph showing the % total votes looks like a middle finger.

Am I glad that he died? No, of course not. Does it really affect me on an emotional level? No.

I'll be sad if one of my heroes died, but hopefully I won't have to face that for a while.

I can't say that I'm sad but it's always a tragedy when someone who means so much to so many people dies.

What I'm more concerned about is the sheer amount of celeb deaths recently.

Seriously, why are they all dropping like flies?

When a celebrity dies, and is brought to the public, they are typically a writer (john Hughes) musician (Ronnie James Dio) or actor (Coleman of course), these people are bringing pieces of their talent to the art form they live in, influencing others, starting new ideas, such as over dubbing with Buddy Holly, a greater sense of performance with Michael, or even a new character architype if their an actor. And when we lose that person we lose their talent, and any further influences they could've made, such as how John Lennon was planning on touring with Cheap Trick, personally i don't cry, but I am saddened when anyone dies, a bit more so with certain celebrities because a piece of an art form dies.

If they had an emotional impact on me, then I care more. I don't like seeing loss of life, but it happens.

I will only be sad if said celebrity is someone that I respect and admire for doing things that I enjoy. For instance, I would be pretty damn bummed if any of the guys in my favorite band died, or someone like (despite the prequels) George Lucas died. I was kind of sad when Dio died recently, because I like someof his music. Gary Coleman, on the other hand, did nothing for me, so I'm indifferent.

But it's never good when anyone dies - even if they don't matter to me, they had family and friends that mattered greatly to them.

Am I sad? Not really. Do I realize he will be missed? Sure. Do I enjoy the coffin jokes? Absolutely.

Nobody is going to cover my death, and anyone outside of my family will likely not give a rat's ass about me passing away. Yeah, it sucks that they died, but people die everyday and personally...I don't care.
