So, i recently was talking to someone who said the recent slip in society could actually be to do with the slip in the censorship.
For example, when terminator first came out, it was an 18, and now it s a 12.
Things like having the "f" word in 12a's.

What do you think?

People were still saying fuck and shit back when Clarke Gable was shocking audiences with 'damn'; censorship is just for show. If you have to blame something, blame humanity for being morally weak.

What do you mean by "recent slip in society"?

I must have missed something over the last few years. Could someone please show some evidence of society slipping and not just changes on the front of DVD boxes?

I think censorship is pointless. I remember watching Yugioh when I was slightly younger and every single gun was censored out. Whoever was holding the gun was then just pointing the whole time. I always thought it was dumb. In Pokemon, they've banned far too many episodes. However, the Safari episode was completely banned for the use of guns and from then on, no one had any idea how Ash had caught 30 Tauros. Kids know that guns exist and should be introduced to them, lightly of course (it was still Yugioh and Pokemon, no one gets shot to death). Same thing goes with swearing. Perhaps have the bad guy swear so children associate swearing with being a bad guy so their vocabulary isn't so vulgar. Obviously an F bomb is not required every other sentence, but at least have it introduced to them.

Well, the fact that kids think they can get away with anything, talk to anyone as if they were idiots, swearing in every sentance. You know, increase in vandalism and what not.

The fact is in the '70s and '80s no one would yell at the old man crossing the road, because they respected and feared said old man.

And since then you could argue that the censorship relates to society (monkey see, monkey do etc).

I concur.

What is this 'slip in society' you speak of?

Nothing to do with the media/censorship. It's all down to parental discipline.

Fun Fact: I first watched Terminator 2 when I was 8, first played GTA at the age of around 10 and at no point during my childhood would I have even considered attacking a random stranger "for the fun of it" or beating up an old man "because he looked at me strangely".

I wouldn't call the rating system censorship. It's really more in place to guide parents. I think parents ignoring the rating system is what has created this problem with children. However I don't think that there is any real problem with children today and that you are over reacting.

Censorship isn't good for children though. It isn't good for anyone.

Maybe those kids don't fear a harsh beating for doing the wrong things, maybe they dont care, there are unlimited other "maybe"'s. You can't blame censorship for a perceived drop in kids behavior.

Speaking of random acts of violence, theres plenty of people who will do that because of their parents. Hell, I was attacked on saturday night because I have long hair and scumbags need to prove that theyre "hardy". It has nothing to do with movies, games, television or censorship. If a child is raised badly, he/she will be a fucking prick when theyre older. Ireland alone is full of people who will lie, cheat and steal purely because their family or friends dont have a problem with it, so neither do they. Of course, like every rule, there are exceptions to this.
Attacking someone "just for the fun of it" or "because he looked at me funny" are probably two of the main reasons for fights in Ireland. And I just dont understand it. I dont get people who have to physicaaly attack another person for some insane reason that wont affect their life one bit, except that they want it to.
As well as not understanding these people, I also hate them. Life would be so much better for everyone if all these people either stopped being the asshats they are or if they all just fucking died.

Honestly society tends to have always been like this. Its just over time people has begun to appreciate that some censureship is a little extreme and have relaxed the standard somewhat. If anything, the strict censureship of the past has lead, perhaps indirectly, to a somewhat distorted image of taboos today. Still its down to other factors as well.

I watched swearing, bloody and racist films from the young age of 3 when my dad used to let me watch them with him if I wanted to. Today I'm still a perfectly balanced individual.

The media also reports a lot more bad news as its pretty much a 24/7 world now. So it seems a lot worse than it actually is.

Wait . . . what? What is the question, even? Also, "the 'f' word?" Really? Do you by any chance mean 'fryer' or 'fan-belt' or 'flying-machine-of-infinite-fucking-wonder?' OH WAIT, THAT'S IT! IT'S FUCK! "[T]he 'f' word' IS FUCK! GO ME!

Grow up dude - if "the 'f' word" is enough to throw the world, or even one post, into a cataclysm, then the world and post have it coming.
