Hey everyone,

I'm kind of at a dilemma. I have a choice of taking chemistry or IPC(Integrated Physics and Chemistry) at my High School. IPC is much easier by what I hear, but if you take it you only graduate with the minimal recommendations even if you take chemistry later on. So I guess what I am asking is if chemistry is hard. What should I know before I take it? I know you need to know algebra, but thats not a problem for me.

Edit: or should I say, you have to be good at chemistry.
Where are you? Im in Australia and we don't have IPC here, only physics and chemistry (of different levels). I have to say Chem is pretty easy (for me).

Having taken Biochemistry at a Degree level (failing due to sucking horribly at maths, and several modules in degree-level physics involve a lot of maths), I have to say it's hard.

What you encounter at highschool will be pretty easy, college (that's the UK 16-18 education) stuff can be tricky until you get your basic conversion rates (and how to calculate moles/volumes/weights and vice-versa) and University-level chemistry is for the insane. But fun.

Dammit, I wish I was better at maths and taking chemistry (now on a much, much easier Classics course, something I also did in college and have a bit of a knack for)!

i always had a knack for chemistry and physics. i got through both classes without doing a single shred of homework or studying. my IB/AP chemistry teacher couldn't believe how i got through tests without studying. so i'm not really the right person to be asking...

altho i found it easy as you can see....

I find it fairly easy, but that's probably only because I pay attention in class and do nothing else.

Chemistry is not hard if you're prepared to do the work. Then again, I took it through the IB Diploma Programme and was one of the better students (read: top five) in my class. Then again, I'm biased on it's difficulty, as taking anormal high school chemistry class is something I'll never experience.

I had little to no trouble with chemistry.

98 on the final.

Balancing equations was probably the most "difficult" thing in the class, and even though I almost got expelled for the giant green flame (I put copper in the flame and turned the burner all the way up, shit hit the ceiling), I loved the class.

Chem is pretty 'hard' overall. Not saying you can't do well in it.

(In high school anyway)
Physics = requires high intellect
Chem = medium intellect + medium work
Bio = high work or (no work, depending on how good your memory is)

Edit: and for some friends of mine, chemistry is 'a piece of cake'. Some people just have different talents for different things
I have to agree with this. Most of my senior class took anatomy, a class which requires little intelligence and no thinking skills. My physics class had 8 participants, and all of us were a cut above the rest. It was by far the most fun that year, and (for me anyway) the easiest.

I find chemistry quite easy, but hey, if its not your thing than its not for you.

EDIT: I should add that physics at my high school was considered to be one of the most advanced classes you could take.

Chemistry was mandatory when I was in High School and yes it was difficult but I managed to pull through two semesters with a B average. It's more or less just something you have to be sure you pay attention in because you don't want to miss anything.

I somehow managed to alleviate the difficulty however by forming a study group of four where we each split the work. It wasn't terribly difficult after we had to explain everything to each other in detail (our teacher wasn't entirely helpful we kindah suspected she was huffing the chemicals a bit too much). After extensive studying and practice chemistry just became a breeze.

Ha! IPC sounds like your schools version of a class at my school called physical science, the class is a joke and I laugh at people who get less than 98 percent in that class(literally my friends councilor, he's the guy who sets up your classes, forced him to take PS and he got around a 105). quite literally, if your school's classes are structure anything like mine(that is to say there is an honors version of chem) then you should take chem if you have the option, only idiots and incredibly lazy people take the lowest class by choice.

Ah, physical science is the normal class people take in 8th grade here, then you have to take biology and earth science before chemistry. BUT, if you do decent in 6th grade at my middle school they rolled life science and physical science into one class for 7th, and then you could take a high school level class for 8th.. Which leads to you being able to take (Biology or earth science, whichever one you didn't take in 8th at the time) then chemistry.. With two more years of classes which you're free to choose what you wish to take. (A bunch of AP classes, and such.. Currently have college chemistry, and university physics lined up if all goes well.)

Chem's never been difficult for me. Then again I have the family background which states that for it to be difficult I would have to consume copious amounts of ethanol before EVERY SINGLE CLASS and possibly after as well.

The basic deal is if you don't catch the logic fairly quickly you need to look for additional help and study like mad. Much of it is maths and logic, but things like understanding structure help. So does a visual memory and a memory good with rote learning for the names of things and the mechanics.

Then you hit uni and find Thermodynamics.

at my high school it goes bio-chem-physics-nothing.

although there are certainly things you can do to fill that nothing up, and if you take physical science you junior and senior year have nothing, although then you can't take AP classes. I manages to get a high B in Honors chem and I generally regard people on this site as intelligent, so I expect him to take a harder class. although if his councilor is anything like my friends he'll talk him out of challenging himself.

Do physics or biology. They are both more enjoyable and easier to underestand, as you can see real world applications in just about everything. If you are really into chem, make sure you get a good teacher.

Wait, your a year and a bit older than me and your in a uni? now my knowledge of the Australian education system my be sketchy, okay I have none, but for you to say that based on experience you would have to be two grades ahead of me(once again I could be very wrong as I'm going off the American system)! that seems like a few two many for a year and a bit. unless, are you by any chance super smart and skipped a grade>

No, I'm not at Uni, but the family background mentioned includes a parent who lectures 1st year chem.

Both of my brothers took up chemistry, both dropped out. You've got to have the right mindset for it, the kind that can memorize thousands of rules and still memorize the exceptions. Needless to say, I won't be taking up chemistry.
