Why would you need to understand algebra? Perhaps the basics but the maths behind chemistry isn't all that much.
Because calculating things like molarity is aided by the use of formulas for which you need algebra. It's also a fundamental logical tool.

insanely easy. i took chem a year ago, and got practically nothing but A's and B's without studying, because it was pretty much just stuff i learned back in 11th grade. we didn't learn anything i didn't already know until about 3-4 weeks before finals.

Surely people can understand substituting into pre-defined formulae without taking maths classes that cover algebra?
Think of it like this. Algebra is an entirely new way of looking at numbers. It requires a lot more abstract thought than maths where every thing's laid out. Using formulas and substituting pronumerals for values IS algebra.

I thought it was easy at GCSE, but several of my friends thought it was quite difficult. I guess it depends your understanding and ablility, so I can't really advise you.

I really think it depends on what kind of chemistry you're dealing with. Speaking as a research chemist, and therefore having done a LOT of different kinds of chemistry over the years, I'd have to say that high school chemistry is really the least of your worries.
I have to agree here, as a fellow research chemist I find certain areas much easier than others, many I wouldn't have the foggiest idea about.

High school chemistry is fairly straight forward though it helps to have a good teacher.
