Pistols. Because in the immortal words of John Doe, "Sometimes a Pistol is more useful than a Rifle in a close encounter".

It also helps I am a crack shot with the single greatest gun in the history of mankind.
The M1911A1.

YES!
When I airsoft (yes, adults do it too) I only use my 367 dollar 1911 Custom (green gas powered), full metal body and gearbox. I've got 6 clips total, and I dominate anyone. Even when they have a rifle.

Where are knives?
I'm a pretty up close and personal guy, so Pistols are my weapon of choice. Much more challenging to sneak up on the guy with an M16 when he has the advantage of RoF and range.

With an assault rifle, you're tempted to go crazy and shoot anything in front of you, AKA "Spraying and Praying." While this is not always necessarily 'bad,' it shows a lack of discipline. I prefer a trained, ammo-conservative doctrine while I'm holding an assault rifle/SMG. While a trained, conservative rate of fire can be accomplished with an assault rifle, the power lies in the punch of a good-ol' rifle. Rifle, Shotgun and Pistol would be my ideal combination. Shotgun for close encounters, rifle for a bit longer range and silenced pistol for sneaky sneak.

I voted for Assault Riffles. They're good for more situations than anything else on the list.

Of those I have to say shotgun. Not because they're the most practical but because of how good it feels to shoot someone at point blank with one.

However i will always love my minigun best. (see heavy in TF2)

SMG for me preferably the MP5 with a silencer .come on SAS style combat rocks. although i do like all gun kinds just not some in each category in CoD4. i like single shot snipers due to good damage and balanced time between shots for the target to take cover (your fault if you screw up). G3 is also awesome if you can get its possible rapid rate of fire down to a T. mounted machine gun + deep impact on headquarters = endless fun

the types i hate are M16 (point shoot forget - 1 hit kill, perk regardless and sniper accuracy) and ACOG snipers with steady aim (why pick a sniper to spray and pray?)

Assault rifles are the most effective across the board, though every weapon has its moments.

This does make me wonder: IRL light machine guns are often used by a team (leading to the term 'crew served weapon.') Would a multiplayer game using a team strategy to these weapons, generally a three man crew, play well? Or would it burden two players with playing back-up to the lucky guy who gets to rock and roll with the big gun?

SAWs (LMGs) seldom have the same role in games as in RL.
SAWs a pretty good for suppressive fire a technique that is somewhat absent in most games. (Full Spectrum Warrion had a realistic approach on how SAWs are used.)
The reason they are mostly useless (in regard to their intended purpose) is that players don't really have much to "fear" when bullets start splashing on their cover.

As far as class based shooters go I'm partial to the scout and spy in TF2, weapon wise that's Revolver/Shotgun. (though with the former you're (probably) more likely to use your knife unless you're running.)

In COD4 its usually the silenced MP5 with uav jammer. There is something so satisfying about sneaking around the map shooting people in the back

Yes, but the 249 is an automatic rifle that borders on a light machine gun, and it is used by a single individual, who can still perform reasonably well as a rifleman. I was thinking more of the US 240 and its various similar true LMGs around the world, where a team of individuals services the weapon. Would that offer a good gameplay feature to gamers in multiplayer?

This poll is totally not what I expected it to be.

I choose assault rifles because they are useful in a variety of situations.
