I'll take damage-dealer. I prefer being able to deal out an obscene amount of damage compared to simply being able to soak it up. Plus, a damage dealer has less HP and thus is less of a burden on the healers. (Once a tank has lost that massive initial HP advantage, they're in the same mess as everyone else.)
Okay now I might not be the best person to anwser this question since my experience in online gaming has been very limited. I can list it off easily: Starcraft, Neverwinter Nights and a very brief bout on the original Everquest. Now generally my approach has been to take on the role that I want to take on based on what I feel like playing as (usually based on whether I'm comfortable with the game or am trying new things out). I don't generally play team-based games so I don't really know. In many RPGs and such though... acutally you know that's really dependant on the game too.
Okay short anwser: Whatever I goddamn want. The annihilator! Chess just got fucked in the face!
Distance damage-dealer, which usually boils down to an archer/sniper. In more tactics-geared games, where you don't have a tank to draw the enemy's attention, I play hit-and-run tactics. Nothing better in "Dawn of War II" than to have Thaddeus stomp on some Eldar face when they least expect it and then leg it.
I'm willing to play anything but tank...and I can be convinced to do that.
Since my favorite class in anything is the Defender from City of Heroes, I should probably say hybrid. They can encompass buff, debuff, control, and light damage...or, if you're awesome (i.e. a Dark Defender), all four.
It depends on the game, but usually I'm either a buffer or stealther.
I like to be the healer in most games, but in games like MMOs I hate it because one mistake can cause your team to spiral into failure.
On the other hand I usually enjoy being a stealthy class. Not necessarily a class that sneaks around, but just any class that deals damage but is not the main target of the enemy like tanks. I prefer to avoid damage rather than endure it. Plus it's hard to pin the blame on these classes when the shit hits the fan.
I just realized I never said my choice. I always enjoyed playing as a tank, there is something satisfying in watching your enemy drop a nuke on you and shrugging it off.
I like to blow things up, with fire if possible. I play the pyro or soldier in TF2 and tend towards mage/sorceror in RPGs. Most other FPS games I like the big guns, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, portable nukes, you know.
