A lot of people I know think Collector's Editions are a waste of money.
I however think it's nice to hav something special, especially when it's a game or series that I really like.
So, do you think Collectors/Limited/Special Editions are worth buying?
Bonus points if you tell the internet what games you have Collectors Editions of.
Collector's Editions CAN be worth buying, but usually aren't. To me the determining factor is what they actually have in them, and what I'm actually likely to do with it.
In general if the Collector's edition has a bunch of arty stuff like posters, art books, and audio CDs it's not worth it to me. I have no place to put the posters, an art book is something that I'm liable to look at once or twice and then will gather dust until it's lost, stolen, or thrown away, and it's very rare when I listen to an audio CD from a game.... besides typically to get one I have to commit to the purchuse of a collector's edition before I even hear the music.
The most useless of all items of course is those special "making of" DVDs. Why should I be paying money so someone can talk about how great they are, and promote a game I already paid for? Very few of these that I have ever seen include anything that I even find paticularly interesting or wouldn't have known about the game.
Things that DO wind up interesting me are knick knacks I can put on a shelf (my Vault Boy bobblehead sits on my computer for example), or something that is actually useful. I actually use my "Agarest War" mouse pad for example with the breats you can rest your wrist in. >
Things like novels, and works of fiction that expand on the game are also worthwhile. I appreciate a good bit of writing or story more than an artbook. I liked the novel they wrote to expand the game's lore for "Alan Wake" for example.
Really, it can be hard to put a finger on. Basically a Collector's Edition needs to impress me. Chances are if it comes with an artbook, a CD, and a making of DVD or other standard type things my response is going to range from "meh" to "lulz" depending on how pathetic it all seems in comparison to the price being demanded.
That's another factor as well, how much do they think the extras are worth? I don't mind paying a decent sum for worthwhile extras, but when the cost of some artsy stuff doubles the price of a game, that's kind of insane. Ditto for some collectible made out of flimsy plastic (one of the reasons I raged against the Batman: Arkham Asylum collector's edition, because like many people I feel I was mislead into believing the Batarang was going to be made out of metal, especially for what I paid... if you visit a surplus store or whatever metal crafts like knives and the like are not all that expensive, so it wasn't like I had some kind of unreasonable explanation. I even have a Batarang knuckleduster arond that I paid like $15 for somewhere).
At any rate, you can probably deduce some of the collector's sets I've actually bought from the above.
