Poll: Conscription - Your Thoughts

Juz wat the title says. If your country forced everyone to serve in the army for 2 years, would u like/hate it? What if it is necessary, like if you live in israel or are surrounded by unfriendly nations? Or issit just a downright violation of our rights no matter what?

Just an example of my own country:

In my country, all boys will have to serve in the army for 2 years after they finish school (i.e. when they're around 18-19). The girls of course, go straight to univerisity. After that, u remain as a reservist till yr 40

No citizen is exempt. U can get out of the country, but starting when yr 11, yr passport will onli last a year. Trying to skip = jail + fine + (if you're not too old) u serve anyway.

It's considered necessary since our country is pathetically small (the dot on the world map representing us is bigger than we actually are) and we're surrounded by countries with a VERY different ethnic make-up. Basically, we're the israel of our region. Cept we nvr had a war. Plus, we're rich and more developed compared to them. Therefore, having such a large army is supposed to act as a deterrence if they try and screw us over.

In my country, views on this issue are divided into mainly 2 grps:
1. It's an epic waste of 2 years. We dun really nid an army, the regulars will suffice
This grp is mainly made up of the young

2. It'll make u a man
This grp is mainly made up of older guys

I personally dun care tat much. It's a little late to run and almost everyone i noe is going to have to go. Also, a great way to get fit =)

Yes i noe a SIMILAR thread has been down. But that was about what u would do if it happened. This is about your thoughts and views on conscription. Whether it violates our rights etc

Please complete your words... "Know" has one more letter than "noe" and the keys are even almost in the same place.

A conscript is never as effective as a volunteer.

Bad idea.

Conscripted armies rarely have the same level of motivation as volunteer forces, they're far more likely to turn on their commanders than soldiers who asked to be there in the first place.

There have been a few exceptions historically (Russian WW2 era army springs to mind), but generally conscript forces operate on fear of their masters and that only works as long as they are more scared of them than the enemy.

Back on topic, I'd be happy enough I suppose. It's only 2 years, I'd probably be in great shape, and have more skills at the end of it. I doubt they'd take me, though.

Hell no. I hate armies and violence as it is. In fact, armies are a completely stupid idea. Now way I'd ever willingly co-operate inside one.

They're a special case, they're also reliant on the overwhelming technological superiority the US provides them with.
If they lost their access to the latest weapons it's debatable how long Isreal would last as a country. Pretty much the entire Middle East would like to see them gone and the Palestinians back in their lands.

I don't mind/ care.

though it's nice to not have to enter the military if that lifestyle just isn't for you, the military is also a nice place to continue education and/ or learn some discipline.

Would be especialy nice if there was no need for a military at all.

Do you really think it's a good idea to have people in your army that hate it with a burning passion and only there because they have no choice at all?

losing your freedom and rights hell it's worth it to join the military to keep them, and yeah it should be mandatory if you do 2 years which would fly by the gov will pay for your education , the kids today in most parts are undisciplined little shits , but i know the gov wouldn't send the rich bastards to fight which is bullshit

See I always figured we should offer to people who refuse to work and are on benefits (how you decide who just cant find work compared to those won't I haven;t figured out). Not just on the front line I'm sure there's something they could do instead because they wouldn't have the dedication if they didn't want to be there.

Personally I'd hate it and avoid it no matte how many white feathers they sent, because I'm a coward when it comes to it.
