Quite regularly, I've seen people react in a very hostile manner to having their posts corrected. Whether it's simple spelling or grammar mistakes or gross factual errors, some people seem to hate being corrected. I'm sure we've all seen posts such as "Who cars if my typin isnt perfekt dis r the internetz not gramer skool only fagets caer abut spellign", or have seen people fly off the handle because someone pointed out a fallacy in their reasoning.

Some seem to think that correcting someone is a sign of arrogance or elitism. While I can see how it sometimes comes across as such, that's more a matter of how you're being corrected than the correcting itself. If someone is all like "You fail at life because you made a typo! Go back to preschool, loser!" yeah, I'd be annoyed too. But most 'grammar Nazis' aren't really that extreme, and just don't like seeing other people make mistakes.

Because of the way people seem to be annoyed by such corrections, I don't really do it very often. I see a lot of people making mistakes in spelling and grammar and misusing words, but often I decide to not point out their mistakes because they're trivial and not worth annoying someone over, but it's an urge I have to suppress because seeing some mistakes pop up again and again is as annoying to me as the corrections are to others. I realise that most of the time the person making the mistake is not to blame. After all, to err is human. But having your mistake pointed out to you might help you prevent making the same mistake in the future.

Personally, I don't mind if people correct me. Nine out of ten times my mistakes are born of typos or ignorance. The first can happen to anyone and is no big deal to correct. In case of the latter, being corrected is an effective way to remedy that ignorance, so I take it as an opportunity to learn something new.

I was wondering how the average Escapist feels about this.

I don't like being wrong so if someone does correct me then I'm glad that they pointed it out. Although I don't think anyone on here has ever corrected me before.

I usually leave other people's posts alone when I quote them, it seems disrespectful to change what they typed. But I don't mind if someone else corrects any spelling or grammar mistakes I made. For instance, that previous sentence is one big grammatical error and if you quote me and fix it, I won't mind at all. I also don't mind when people edit my posts for comedy's sake so long as they don't make me look too much like an idjit.

I think that grammar/spelling/etc. is the best way to have people take your point seriously. If your post doesn't read well, why should I care what you have to say? You obviously don't care because you spent no time making it legible.

It should be "I'm sure we've all seen posts such as".

OT

I correct people, and I expect to be corrected; the internet isn't a place where knowledge is left by the way-side, it is the sum total of all knowledge.

Well, I'd consider my spelling and grammar to be very good. So any mistakes are probably just stuff I overlooked, and I'm happy to be corrected on them.
It's better I find out and correct it, rather than have it sitting there being wrong forever.

Also, I'm always glad to have flaws in my arguments pointed out. It's the best way to learn.

Ha, all kidding aside, it gets annoying when a handful of people just quote you to fix a silly mistake in spelling or grammar and add nothing to the conversation. But in terms of when I make a big factual mistake I usually am like, "OK, wow, maybe I need to rethink my stance on something if this is true." Though some people pull facts out of their arse or try to pass off their opinion as fact in a lot of posts when they quote.
But for the few cases that people do correct me only on grammar or spelling and add nothing else, I usually put them on ignore. If that is all they really look through the posts for then I don't feel like I need to ever read anything they might contribute.

Or when people continue to correct you after the mistake has already been acknowledged.

The problem isn't so much that the correction is irritating and condescending (which it is), but that it shits up the forum for everyone else much more than the typo does. As long as it's readable, let it lie.

i don't mind if i learn things from it.
for instance i learned about the use of 'and, on the escapist.

but if i miss a key once in a while it shouldn't be a problem, so don't make it one.

I try to not fly off the handle or get angry when someone corrects me and I try to stand behind it (Or ignore the guy. No need starting an arguement with a guy I will proably never meet) and while Spelling errors are a pet peeve of mine, I'm not gonna go crazy because someone mispelled one word.

I think people need to understand that the Grammar Nazis here aren't that bad. We only point extreme cases of horrible grammar and we won't jump on you if you hit the wrong key while spelling something.

I tend not to correct people's posts. But on the rare occasion that I do, I check my post extra carefully to make sure I avoid invoking Muphry's Law.

Actually they're both right, depending on where you're from.

Just saying. :D

I honestly don't care. If someone wants to correct me, they can help themselves, but I try to make it so that my posts are easy to understand. If there is some error, I usually don't find until much later, at which point I could really care less.

But that only seems to happen every few weeks or so (not just here but on other sites as well) so I've rarely had to deal with such situations.

Quite frankly sir, I raged. if a person can't be arsed to go back and re-read what they themselves have taken the time to type out, why should I give their opinion any more thought than its generator?

Quite frankly sir, I lol'd. And your avatar gives me worrying thoughts and pleasantly disturbing ideas.

I know so little and spell poorly alot so help is well received over here:) So usually I take it in good taste, but if somebody corrects my grammar or what have you without actually saying something afterwords, they're just making their post count falsely higher which I dislike.

On another note I think that forum games and group chat shouldn't contribute to your post count!

Where do you use realise? Spell check, my Webster's 2007 Dictionary, and even google (and various dictionary sites searched through it) corrects it to realize.

Edit: Because I don't want to use my 1,000th post just yet. I'm just going to edit here.
As several people have mentioned, apparently realise is the British way of spelling it.
My response is a quote from the Simpsons:
"English? Who needs that? I'm never going to England!"
