Let's say, for the sake of argument, that new movies were made available online for download at the same price as a standard movie ticket (whatever that price is in your area, and let's say that through some miracle of SCIENCE everyone who watches, also pays). Would you do this instead of going to the theater? Why?

Its much more impressive on a massive screen. Also you can check out the nearby shops while you are there.

The theatre is more than the movie. It's going out with friends. It's a way to set up a date (never see a movie on the very first date; you can't talk) . It's a massive screen. It's a shared experiance. It's an event.
I love going to the movies. Although this part of the country you can still pay for two movie tickets for under $12

I would not pay the the same for a downloaded movie as for a movie theater ticket.
It's too much. 2 tickets = the price of one new DVD.

this.

I like the movies, I like the coke and popcorn, plus downloading movies would take waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy too long and put me over my usage.

Movie theatres have a much better sound and image quality and is much more impressive, so I'd go with that.

It would depend on the movie. Some films need to be seen on a big screen, but for others it doesn't make quite so much difference. Plus, it takes time to get the the nearest cinema, and I have to pay for a train ticket. All in all, it would be much cheaper and easier to download, but there would still be films that I'd go to the cinema to see.

I don't like downloaders. I happen to love the majestic movie theatre. For me there is nothing more magical then the silver screen.

While some films are better on huge screen (I know I'm going to Ice Age 3, for example), I can't stand idiots bringing 2kg (about ~4 pounds) of popcorn to a 1,5h movie. For Christ's sake, it's 90 minutes!! I'm sure you won't die of starvation. Also, there are shops where you can buy twice as much popcorn for 5 times less money, only you have to make it yourself.

Oh, and cellphones, I hate them.

I'd download movies that I wouldn't normally go see but for some movies the cinema is a better experiance or I would download if I didn't have a 2MB internet connection that would take me days to get even short movies.

To be honest the tickets cost to much these days, I expect every movie to be the quality of The Godfather or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly....

But its not so...I barely go to the cinema and stick to rent/download/whatever movies. Unless they really good.

Yes movies will be obsolete when my house gets an 87 foot screen with 24 speakers.

Save for the ticket prices being so low, I completely agree with this.

Movie theatres have always been more than just places to view movies.

Dear god I hope it doesn't. There's nothing like a giant screen with surround sound in a dark room surrounded by people you don't know.
