It never ceases to amaze me when I read that guys are stereotypically dismissing girls' crying.

Just like we're not allowed to get mad for any reason other than that we're on our period, we cry for no reason.

Silly boys...that's why I laugh at you when you cry.

Would it be weird if I said I would be more likely to help a guy who's crying because he is more likely to be crying for a reason?

Forgive my sexist joke... but seriously.

On another note, wow the poll is exactly 50/50, never seen that before.

Like several other people regardless of gender I'd do nothing.

Women don't like me very much. A crying women would probably just call me a creep.

As for men, well i doubt most men who are in tears on the street really want someone asking them about it.

A child is different however. If i see a lone child crying good chance the kid is lost, and despite my dislike of children who are not related to me my morale's dictate i have to try and help. Though once again it isn't affected by gender.

Mmm... Trollbait. Not falling for it.

OP: Probably, but it's really all situational for me in the case of either gender. I laugh sometimes when girls -or- guys cry, I'm sometimes concerned, I'm otherwise indifferent. *shrug*
Whats the trollbait? That girls often cry for no reason? I'm inclined to agree with Stu. I love my gf to death but lord knows sometimes her feelings are not even close to being rational, and I'm known in my group as a very empathic and understanding guy. Women....*rolls eyes*

OT: Depending on the situation I'd be a bit hesitant but cautiously helpful in both cases. Guys can cry even if it isnt "manly". Its just an emotional response, I like my feelings and cry if I have to. The only good reason I can think of not to cry is if I'm trying to stay strong and be a safe haven for someone even more miserable.

I probably wouldn't act any differently. If I was moving or if someone was with him, I'd avoid him. If I was staying in one place and no one was there to help him, I might help.

Crying person == Crying person
I'd treat them both accordingly, just like those shouty ladies have been telling us to do for years now.

It kinda makes sense; the whole stigma attached to male emotional expression does tend to allow only for reaction to more severe stimuli. Not to imply that I think women cry for no good reason, of course- that would be presumptuous and arrogant.

I support this answer and all of its sexist implications.

I usually ignore people I don't know when they're visibly upset/distressed about something; knowing my luck, if I try to help I'll just end up making everything worse.

My mom taught me one thing we'll never forget: "Boys don't cry. Men do."
The way I see it, crying doesn't diminish how "manly" someone is. It shows that they're man enough to show their emotions no matter what people think.

I'd ignore either sex equally unless it was someone I cared about. Then, equally I'd approach them if I truly actually care about them, which is rare.

I'm gonna have to agree with this too. I don't think it's inherently sexist, just a difference between what men and women see as a good reason to cry.

Edit: OT - Assuming I know the person and they are the same age as me I'd help them whether they're a guy or girl. The girl would wanna talk about it so I'd be listen-man while the guy would wanna get drunk or go to a strip bar, both of which are more fun than listen-man.

Probably yes, sexism is the cornerstone of our society.

Although I'd be willing to just ignore a stranger of any gender. Don't be too nosey, you don't need other people's problems when you're up to the neck in your own shit.

I would help him just like i would help the girl.
Plus usually a girl will cry because her non-serious relationship with a guy she barely holds hands with dumped her which is idiotic.
So i might even try helping him harder than the girl.
A man crying....
Sign of weakness my ass!

If it's a strange guy crying I would probably avoid them though feel bad for him.
If it was a strange woman.. I don't know. The younger, less threatening-looking, the more likely I'd speak to them.
I hate seeing people upset, but I tend to avoid approaching strange people. Self-preservation, rather than thinking people shouldn't cry.

If it was a friend, I would want to know if there's anything I can do, even if it's just pat them on the back while they get it out. Couldn't leave a friend like that :S

Yeah it'd be slightly different, but only because I generally act differently towards men and women.

I would just keep walking, If I comfort a girl I may get a girlfriend out of it, but if I comfort a guy I wouldn't get anything.
