Seriously? Block 'em or delete 'em or get rid of 'em some other way. Otherwise, man up and grow some balls.

Do you realise how hard it would be for police to respond to even 1/1,000th of the events of cyberbullying? That's just never going to be worth the effort it would take.

I agree that it's not something that needs to be happening, and I personally think it's pretty pointless, but it's just not going to realistically stop anytime soon.

if its just bullying why in the hell do you need cops? real bullys don't even get arrested. i think they should only intervene on matters that could end up in serious damage such as threats to kill someone

Turthfully I think the police would fuck everything up, and really what would the police say if they went to someones house who was bullying another person online. "Sir/ma'am we're going to have to ask you to come with us. We have heard that you have been recently bullying someone. How dare you!" Then what throw the person in jail for two days as a time out? If you get hurt when someone picks on you over the internet you should probably go take a walk outside and meet some real people.

Policemans? On my Internets? No thanks.

I've never understood how cyberbullying works. Surely, surely there aren't so many services through which one can be contacted that don't allow you to just ignore further communications from people.

I still reckon the one, sure fire way to end cyber bullying and by extension trolling and spamming and all other problems on the internet would be to pass a law that makes it a legal obligation for everyone to show their true identity on the web.
No.
You are so very wrong on this point that it's not even funny.

There's no way for police to do anything about cyber bullies until after the fact. The internet is not controlled by any legal jurisdiction.

In my study of the instances of when cyberbullying made the news it was because the person committed suicide. It's likely that they had mental health issues to begin with. So the way to stop this is for parents to be more involved in what their child is doing on the internet. Parents need to be more involved in their kid's life anyway. If they were they would know that their child has mental health issues and needs to seek help for them.

Cyber bullying is very horrible.Ive seen heaps about it on the news and i think police should start getting invovled.
ummm... depending on what exactly is going on in the bullying situation.
We already do get involved. I am of course speaking of ones where both parties know each other in person. Not 'ANimeFan184 is calling me an idiot on every single thread' type things.

One instance I can think of is where two teenage girls were going at it on facebook and eventually one of them said to the other that she was going burn her house down or something.
That is not okay.

This happened like 5 years ago though.

edit: I just remembered it was two girls picking on one girl.

as a fellow /b/rother i have to say that if somebody takes a raid on them seriously that they have issues that need to be dealt with themselves. and instead of police finding whoever is responsible and lovking them up and throwing away the key they should get help from friends, parents etc. that advice is THEY ARE MINDLESS MORONS WITH NO LIFE... GET OVER IT THEY ARE TOOLS.

obviously hacking accounts and stuff is a different kettle of fish. (but it is kinda stupid to put certain pictures up in the first place... and why does nobody care about redtube etc they have heaps of videos of people doing stuff they don't want made public. why does nobody mention them

What if it's someone the victim knows personally? So those people start spreading vicious rumors about them. Or posting personal information about them or start signing them up for weird 'fuckbook' type websites without their consent or make fake facebook accounts or whatever friend all their friends and make claims that they do very socially damming things.
Teenage girls are getting very creative in this field and we ARE being alerted to some of them.
Though in most cases there isn't much we can do. (except that fake account thing that's illegal, though it probably wouldn't hold up in court)

Hit the person doing it. Really hard.
Either that or do the same thing back to 'em to see how they enjoy it.

Basic responses but the most realistic, expecting some sort of policing of the internet is expecting a miracle. Two reasons: firstly the internet is seen as a place where near absolute freedom of speech is guaranteed; secondly (and realistically more important) is the mental amount of money that'd be required to fund any internet police force.

People, kids especially these days, need to learn to stand up for themselves. It's our societies fault really, saying violence is always bad, when it isn't; and that your parent(s) will always protect you. Also, that emotional and verbal bullying is 'ok', while in actual fact it does much more damage over a much longer period of time than a punch to the face or knee to the balls ever would.

Two ways to solve it, both involve a societal change.
1 - Violence becomes less of a "big deal", obviously still bad when in excess or unprovoked. This is obviously not a very good change.
2 - That verbal and emotional bullying become the target of a publicity campaign or two explaining how damaging they are in order to get rid of it.

And there you have kurupt87s 20-minutes-of-thought-problem-solving-supernova.

absolutely not. it's very easy to avoid bullying online, and if someone is so stupid as to actually be hurt, or even driven to suicide, as has been seen before, by cyberbullying then I say it's just cleansing the genepool.

Cyber-bulling is just a way to blow of steam and be a dick when you know you can get away with it. It can be ignored, blocked, or laughed at. Just like threats on the internet, is has no weight. People should not be bothered by it, it's not like you know these people in real life. If you did, then it's stalking and a totally different issue.

In fact, having the "internet police" (something that is laughed at and used as a derogatory term for zealous mods) would only hurt people.

"cyber bullying"? Are you fucking kidding?

You moron. You are the stupidest dipshit in the galaxy. If you were here, I'd totally beat you up. Hey! Don't do that! I'm typing at you, goddamnit! Don't you push that X button! If you close this window, I will take away your internet-dignity by giving you a internet swirly! I swear you will regret it. I DEMAND YOU TO KEEP READING MY INSULTS.

DISCLAIMER: I only said all that to prove a point. I'm not flaming a user. I harbor no ill will towards the OP, or anyone else on the Escapist.

Also, police don't even get involved in physical bullying, why would they get involved in cyber bullying?
You really have no idea what it actually is, do you?

Big fucking NO on that one. Like we need more cops to spy on and harass us.
