How does that work exactly? Darkvision isn't an ability with a timer or something, it doesn't need to be "warmed up". Light goes on, ogres turn lose/turn-off darkvision, light goes off, darkvision springs back on.
I was wondering the same thing. My understanding of the rules concerning darkvision is that it's merely an on/off thing at will. I'll admit that doesn't necessarily make a whole lot of sense from a real world standpoint, but it's D&D we're talking about. I might rule that it can be temporarily blinded by a quick transition from darkness to daylight, but that would only last for a few moments.

Yeah, as a DM I would rule that they are blinded for one round, with all the penalties inherent with it. The players would possibly get a surprise round unless the ogres get a fantastic save or something. Now, if it was orcs or drow, they get that whole dazed thing in addition to the blindness.

My favorite D&D memory has to be of my Lawful Good Aasimir Sorcerer. So at level 1 I joined my friends whose characters were both in the range of level 10-12 (yeah my DM was an arse about that) So eventually I got up to around level 4 or 5, and we were fighting a frost giant in it's lair. It backhanded one of them with it's axe for 50 subdual. One guy had his brain jarred, and the other was simply cut in half, so it was up to my low level sorcerer and I just barely did enough damage to knock him out with, of all things, magic missile. Yes, I killed a frost giant with Magic Missile. Remember kids, Magic Missile kills! Guns don't kill people, magic missiles do!

But I generally play and enjoy a wide variety of classes, I think I have played all of the PHB 1 classes at some point or another. Usually I play any good aligned. I guess it is just a natural tendency of mine. I often play spellcasters, specifically sorcerer, as usually no one else goes for magic classes. I had some good fun as a Chaotic Good gnome bard. I really like the warmage class from the Complete Arcane.

Well admittedly I'm currentply playing my first ever campaign, but I'm a Gnome Wizard, Neutral Good, and I am loving it. At first I was completely useless, since Cantrips do pretty much nothing in battle (though they were slightly helpful in conversation). But once I started getting some other spells, I became pretty hardcore. I really enjoy it.

I'm considering casting Enlarge Person on myself, followed by a permanency spell so I can be a 6-foot tall gnome. Just 'cause that would be awesome.
Don't underestimate cantrips!

You are in a dark building with no lights.
You have ogres in the next room.
Your team all has darkvision.
You tell your team to close their eyes and cast light in the next room.
dispell the light and your team charges.

You just blinded an entire room of ogres because their darkvision will not come back into effect for another few minutes.
You sound like me>_>

I don't haave a particular class or race, but I do tend to make Chaotic Neutral charahcters that are usually hyper prepared to the point of breaking the DM's encounters to tiny tiny pieces. Which is why I hate being stuck in a extra-dimensional prison with limited resources. *Goes off grumbling about literally losing their only crowbar to Cthulhu*
Wait...what?

Crowbar?

Cuthulu?

If nothing else, please PM me and explain!
We were trying to pry open an extradimensional door into the Far Realms. We almost succeeded (the check was high enougn due to aiding and a very high initial roll) but our crowbar started sprouting tentacles and became useless. We ended up squishing it.
Crowbar...sprouting tentacles.

Was it turning into a mini cuthulu?

You didn't think, "Awe! Cute!" and keep it as a pet?

...

Wait, let me go back to the beginning...

Why in the hell was your crowbar spawning tentacles?
Far Realms pretty much is Cthulhu territory. Instead of letting us escape by opening said doorway to teh Far Realms, DM decided that the influence of it warped reality on anything it gets near (Ie: mutations ins living creatures) and it mutated the crowbar so that the DM didn't have her campaign broken.
0.0 What were you trying to escape from that would drive you INTO the far realms? Wait, the prison? HAHA! Um... what was the "real" method of escape? And if the door wasn't it, why did she include it? Just to tempt you?
We are stuck in an extradimensional prison, and we have to get 3 shards of the guy who it was made ot imprison's soul. The doorway was a teleporter, you just walked into it and it ported you to a different part of the prison. We tried to bypass the rest and just GTFO cause we were tired of all the back tracking.

Edit: TO tell the truth, she should have expected it once O joined the group, cause i have a tendency to try and take the least complicated route towards our objective.

I play a fighter/warblade, chaotic good of course.

Told a cultist I would feed her to a werewolf if she didn't cooperate. Guess that's where the "chaotic" part comes in....

Ranger, Chaotic Good.

I like being able to drop most of the monsters we fight before my friends can even engage in melee.

druid... warrior... paladin.... warlock..... ect. not a very complete pull i do say.
Hence, the inclusion of the "Other" option. I mean, with all the extra sourcebooks, it would be nigh-impossible, and in the end, not very rewarding, to include EVERY POSSIBLE OPTION.

Rogue/Bard, Lawful Evil. I enjoy being the face of the party, the skill monkey, and the man that will steal your baby to sell back to you for a nickel. I tend to be just evil enough to get a long talking to by Paladins, but not an outright slaying.

Alternatively, I enjoy playing a chaotic evil DM.

I'm a half elf warlock, chaotic neutral, i would be chaotic evil, but there's a paladin in my party with an almost addiction to smiting all that is evil. I'm also an alcoholic amnesiac, or as i like to say "an amnesiac who drinks to forget" (clever, I know)
I've only played a few times, but it is AWESOME!

I haven't DMed yet, and we frequently have problems finding people to do it, I would but I don't think i have the experience yet.

Bard, sitting in the back, buffing my teamates without ever being in danger, but always being important.

I've always played some kind of chaotic neutral just because I can't consistently keep my sanity.

i can see you over looking warlock, but how could you miss warrior, that was in there since rule book 1. and paladin, come on that's a very popular one.

Why would anyone want to stick with just one class?
Because not all of us get off on abusing the multiclass system to overpower our characters? :p
That depends on how you multiclass. If you stick with the core stuff, multiclassing is more inefficient then gamebreaking. If, however, you start going stuff like Swordsage (Tome of Battle), then yes, you tend to be somewhat overpowered.

Which is why I have an inconsistent relationship with splat books. They can be great for character concepts, and SOME things they have are good, but a lot of them are terribly gamebreaking, or just plain useless. I submit for your consideration: the Rage Mage, or the Frenzied Berzerker.
I have no idea what a Rage Mage is. I can probably guess what a Frenzied Berserker is like though.
Think a combination of barbarian and sorcerer. They can go into a rage and cast spells. No, I'm not sure if there is a benefit. Yes, it is as silly as it sounds.

And Frenzied Berzerker: whenever they take damage (from ANY source), they have to make a will save (yes, barbarian will saves) to avoid going into a frenzy. Like a rage, except they will attack EVERYONE. So, you are walking through town, your friendly neighborhood barbarian stubs his toe, all of a sudden you have a lot of dead townspeople. Or you are in a fight, and take down your opponents faster then expected. He has three rounds of +lots to hit and +lots more to damage to take out on someone. No, it can't be ended voluntarily.

Well, it's a bit of both. Frenzied beserkers are the bastard fighters. Their damage is overwhelming. With a high level one, they frenzy and rage for +16str, and then power attack at a x4 for each bit of their base they trade in. At lvl 20, they can trade it all and do an extra 80 damage each hit. However, it gets worse. As said, their frenzy ability can hurt everyone, but the trade off is thus. While they are frenzied, they can't die of damage. It lasts as long as barbarian rage does, which is incredibly easy to push longer and longer.

They'll take a wrath of god to the face (305d6 damage) and still go forward and beat down the mage that did it.

They can solo a hecantcheries (CR 57) for about 20 rounds.

Sure, they die at the end of it, if they've taken too much damage, but by then everything nearby is usually toast too. Party members will usually have a method of not getting hit, so it's all the more nasty.
