This poll sucked(I ain't even mad), this thread has been made a million times, this is a utterly pointless thread that I hate and if I could I would kill it with fire.

Pfff, the world is actually going to end on Febuary 2, 2222, because that's when all the numbers will be the same. My logic is infallible.
Pretty sure we have the 11th of November THIS FUCKING YEAR to worry about first.
Or at least celebrate.
I should celebrate the 2012 day :D

Nothing is goina happen, but I'm going to have fun taking over the houses for those who run for the caves.

I like the line my dad told me, "What usually happens when a calender reaches its end? We get a new one!"

There were a bunch of people who said the world was going to end in the year 1000 also, and we're still here, so that theory went straight out the window. The recent disasters is what we who've taken Statistics call a coincidence. Every once in a while, you just get a lot of bad shit in quick succession. That's just how things work.

No, it's like when every one got hyped when they thought that Hydrocolider was going to cause a black hole, every one got hyped, then when they survived, they just forgot about it.

Mayan Calendar Maker A: Well we've used up all the space on this piece of stone. How far does it go to?
Mayan Calendar Maker B: 2012
Mayan Calendar Maker A: Ah, well we've got plenty of time to add more years. Let's go have some chocolate.
The next day they were wiped out by the Conquistadores xD
ROFL. Here's what I think happened:

Rebellious Mayan Teenager: 12.19.19.16... 12.19.19.17... 13.0.0.0! Alright Mom, I finally wrote all the dates until the end of the cycle! CAN I PLEASE GO OUT NOW!?

OT: Despite all the bad stuff happening recently, I still think that no one knows the exact date of when the world is going to end. Oh sure, we have an idea of what ahead of us, and there's a lot of bad stuff happening in the world right now, but the fact is our forefathers had dealt with greater crisis. "But what about the Mayans?" I hear some of you say. Well check this out.

?If I went to some Mayan-speaking communities and asked people what is going to happen in 2012, they wouldn?t have any idea,? said Jose Huchim, a Yucatan Mayan archeologist. ?The world is going to end? They wouldn?t believe you. We have real concerns these days, like rain.?

So there you go world, even the Mayans think you're nuts.

P.S. If anything the world should have ended on December 21, 2010:

We know that the Maya tracked and predicted lunar eclipses, and the cycles of Venus. Tables of both of these events appear in the Dresden Codex. So, today (December 21st, 2010) there was a total lunar eclipse, and Venus is near its greatest western elongation (which occurs on January 8th, 2011), and the solstice occurs at 23:38 UT? all in one day!!!

It looks like 2012 is coming true...Why is the earthquwake in Japan, the radiation, and the star explosion in 2004 (it really did happen, look in to it),it looks like the end days are coming true!I really dont know what to think, maybe its just the end of Japan..(then the ancient mayans where Japanese!)What do you think??
You do realise that scholars are still arguing about when the calender even started right?

It makes no sense to be all "THE WORLD IS ENDING COS THIS CALENDER ENDS" when we don't even know when it starts.

Anyway, 2012 is totally going to "come true". At least in the sense that it is going to happen. The end of the world: not so much.
you reminded me of this
"Is it going to happen? of course it's gonna be 2012. And after that 2013."
Thanks for linking that! It was interesting. I especially liked how the guy said that you shouldn't resort to using him as a reference just because he is an authority and that you should always try to understand matters yourself. Also, I liked that he said that being able to ask the right questions is more important than memorizing science.

I'm not so sure I agree that his questions are the right ones though. The fact that the planet aligns with the center of the universe each year tells us that it probably isn't such a big deal, but it does nothing for helping us understand why.
Also, debunking the "end of the Mayan calendar" by basically saying that the Mayans believed some stupid other shit as well doesn't really seem the way to go. The fact that they believe other things, doesn't mean that this one thing can't be correct. I would focus more on the "prediction" itself (which is apparently nonexistent; the calendar just ends).

It's crap, they've all been crap and I can't wait to watch it all unfold.

My biggest argument? What timezone is going to be the one where the world ends? This is like when I talked to a person two hours ahead of me on the 2000 new years and asked if the world had ended back there. Is the world going to end in Australia and make it's way west? It's retarded.

Fools, don't you all know that the world has already ended in 1998 ?
We're all living in a post apocalyptic world ruled from the shadows by a sinister kabal of super inteligent apes whom seek to bring forth their giant banana god from the 9th dimension !

We should all put our money into superconducting cheese and hope we'll be able to ride out the storm and one day free ourselves from the tyrany of ape domination !

You have to understand that it's very hard to explain scientific stuff to non-scientist. I see from your profile that you're studying IA (I was too). Imagine trying to explain what "P=NP" is about to someone in a totally different field, like art, architecture or law? They'd go "what? np complete? What does that mean? Polynomial time? Non deterministic? What are you talking about? What does a traveling saleman have to do with it?"

If De Grace Tyson had started to explain why planet alignement doesn't matter, he would have had to explain how gravity works, and that would have needed further explanation, and so on. He would have lost his audience who would have been completly confused and unconvinced.

Here's another video from another scientist describing better than me what I meant:

Millions of earthquakes occur every year. Hundreds of significant ones occur every year. How is the earthquake in Japan indicative of the world ending?

You would put your trust in a civilization that sacrificed 80,000 humans in one ceremony just to open a new temple when this could have sufficed?:

Make no mistake, the Mayans were stupid as hell.
... sorry dude, you´ve watched too much movies, the Mayans weren't that keen on sacrifice, the ones that made sacrifices were the "Aztecs"... dear god people!
Are you giving me a counter-point because you agree with human sacrifice? Or is it you believe the Mayans were right about that whole end of the world thing?

Yes, you are correct. But the Mayans did still participate in human sacrifice. Quantity doesn't really matter, they are still retarded (regardless of how many inventions or good things they brought to the world).

EDIT: also, why are we getting future telling tips from a dumbass civilization that was too stupid to predict their own demise? you think they can predict our future and not theirs?
This.

I had a teacher who was genuinely afraid of 2012 and I presented to her the following facts:

1) The southern American tribes thought the conquistadors who would later annihilate them were gods
2) The southern American tribes thought the sun was a sentient being
3) Pareidolia and confirmation bias: you see whatever you want to see
4) Every other tested 'the end is nigh' theory to date has been wrong

...

She still fears 2012. There's no rational argument to be had with some people.

Scientific American had a great article on polynomial time, deterministic computing tasks and so on that I find a great reference for explaining this stuff (especially with reference to quantum computing as that's what the article was geared towards).

So stupid they measured the solar year more accurately than Greek astronomers.

And just about EVERY culture practiced human sacrifice in some form or another.
