The Riddler can work in the Dark Knight style. Also, I really really really don't want Two-Face to be dead. That character, in it's new style, has WAY too much potential to be disregarded as an annoying side character, and be disposed off after a few scenes. Hopefully the new Batman movie will deal with a more personal battle Batman must face. Just watch the last few minutes of The Dark Knight, and you'll know why. And if ANY character can make a brilliant 'personal villain', so to speak, it's the new Two-Face. Batman is a vigilante, hunted down now (as you can see in the last few minutes of The Dark Knight), Two-Face could fit perfectly in that: a new villain is threatening Gotham, for example The Riddler. Now Two-Face would do anything to take revenge on Batman, so he'll work together with the new villain, trying to link the villains crimes to Batman, thus taking the police's attention off the villain and on Batman instead. So whilst Batman has to dodge the police, who are now hot on his heels, and while the whole city is starting to hate him, because they think he's attacking the city, he still has to stop Two-Face and his partner. That's fertile ground for a more personal Batman movie, if you ask me. Never gonna happen though.

I personally don't think the Riddler would work, because he would be too similar to the Joker in presentation. You'd have another crazy villain that likes to play games with people's lives- it would be repetitive.
It wouldn't be repetitive in any way whatsoever. The Riddler is completely different to the Joker, he's a very non-violent villain (only use violence in very rare occasions or for self defence), and he doesn't screw with people's lives in any way at all. He simply has ADD which leaves him with a compulsion to always leave riddles and puzzles which need to be solved as clues to his crimes and so on. He's completely different from the Joker, the Joker was a sadist who delighted in causing pain and misery and trying to create insanity in the minds of all around him (especially Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, and also Commissioner James Gordon in The Killing Joke).
I don't see how he'd fit the Batman world established by the movies. The mood of the reent Batman movies has been very dark and the Riddler, unless a drastic change in tone occurred within the movies, would need to reflect this. An ADD criminal leaving clues everywhere would hardly fit that mood, he'd have to change a bit so that his clues and riddles were made darker, which would be very similar to the way the Joker was presented in the Dark Knight. Unless they could pull off some sort of Jigsaw (from the Saw franchise) version of the Riddler with elaborate death traps and riddles to get out of them,(which I feel would go away from the other two movies immensely), I don't see how he could fit at all.

*snip*. I'd also say Harley Quinn, but I'm unsure as to how they'd pull it off since The Dark Knight focused on the early days of The Joker as an enemy of Batman and Harley Quinn only came to be a villain when she met The Joker in Arkham Asylum during his first incarceration there. Hence to bring her into the equation wouldn't make sense unless they bring The Joker back, and no-one would be able to match Heath Ledger...
I agree with the no one matching him acting wise

but think that it would also be bad to just leave the joker out altogether, it could be explained that he's enjoying a nice stay in arkham and is messing with Harleys mind, maybe introduce her as a sucsessfull young Psycho-analyst, and have her start to turn throuought the film, no need to show them acctually together just have it allude to her working on the jokers case far too much
Though this would be possible, the jokers absence would be VERY obvious.

They don't have to stay strictly to the original source material, and lord knows they haven't so far. I could see Harley as being a loyal henchmen or an ex lover of the joker, who's now left distraught after his death (killing him off I think is probably the best option) and is out for revenge on Batman. She could then side with the main villain, who ever that might be, before double crossing him/her, killing him/her off and finishing batman herself.

That would work, actually. I think since Hollywood rarely gives up on a successful franchise, we can fully expect Batman 3 before the end of 2010 and most likely a Batman 4 if that succeeds in the box office. Hence building up Harleen Quinzel now in this way, without the Joker actually being seen, would work, then in Batman 4 they could have Harley Quinn as a main villain and perhaps take revenge on Batman for his role in capturing the Joker in the first place. Or something like that. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, and the franchise, here, but it may work.

If it wasn't for the fact that no-one will replace Heath Ledger though, and also that Alan Moore hates movie adaptations of his works, I'd be suggesting the Killing Joke adapted as a possible storyline for the next film though.

EDIT: Actually, on reading SomeBritishDude's post I have to say that's a much better idea :).

I think the Riddler and Clayface would make for an interesting combo in the next movie.
The problem with the great villains like Clayface, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, hell, even Superman, is that none of them make sense in the new Batman world that movies have created. They've created a Gotham, world and characters that are real, that feel like they could exist in the real world.

None of these characters feel that way at all. What, you want a great big man made of stone to fight with the mob?
True. Killer Croc, along w/ Mr. Freeze, seem like they can be explained through scientific mishaps easily enough. Killer Croc would be more difficult, but not impossible. It's still a fictional world that does have some loopholes. After all, we're only 2 movies in so far and the universe hasn't been fully fleshed out yet.

Maybe alterations to the villains is all that is needed.

Honestly, they should stop. They'll never surpass the Dark Knight. The fact is that they're BAD movies with a great actor that happens to not be alive anymore.
Have you seen any of Christopher Nolan's other films?
The Dark Knight isn't even his best. I didn't even think it was better than the first.

As for the villains:
Harley Quinn won't work without Ivy and Joker.

The Riddler would be the most fun and offer the most opportunity for creativity.

I would most like to see Bane come into the story somehow. This batman is yet to face any real physically dominating villains.
Introducing him could open up the "broken bat" saga and even open a door for a possible Robin.

I agree there, up to a point. As it happens, most films don't succeed when too 'dark', as it were, apart from horror films and thrillers. A franchise like Batman, while I agree has become much darker with the last two films than it ever was in the Val Kilmer era, still won't succeed with overuse of a 'dark' theme. There needs to be a level of 'light', for want of a better word (I should know, I make amateur films myself at university), else it won't work. Hence the Riddler could potentially be a kind of release from the darkness that would be included with a more sadistic or violent main villain, and the Riddler could simply be a side villain there to help keep it from being too dark. Relying too much on the dark theme of the series would be a pretty poor move on Warner's part.

Dude...Two-Face is dead. If Nolan thinks that The Penguin is too much camp for his Batman, what would he think of Two-Face coming from the grave.
actually they never said he was dead and he was breathing after the fall

i'd like to see catwoman, tho she's not really a villain

i think they'll do the riddler tho
Did you fail to see the final scenes were Gordon is talking about Dent in Harvey Dent FUNERAL!!!

Did you actually see the movie?

From Wiki:

Knowing that the citizens of Gotham will lose hope and all morale if Dent's rampage becomes public news, Batman convinces Gordon to hold him responsible for the murders. Images are shown of Gordon delivering the eulogy at Dent's funeral and smashing the Bat-Signal. Police swarm the building, and Batman flees as Gordon and his son watch.

And here is the final scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psSGVhTd0i8&feature=related

I love how people say that The Dark knight is a great movie yet fail to remenber what the hell went on the movie.

Nolan say he is dead. Aaron Eckhart that plays Two-Face says he is dead. TWO FACE IS DEAD.

'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! Two-Face is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you had watched the movie properly 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-TWO-FACE!!

Q: Is Harvey Dent alive?

Aaron Eckhart: No. He is dead as a door nail.

Q: So he's not coming back?

Eckhart: He ain't coming back, baby!

Q: I was hoping he would.

Eckhart: No. I asked Chris [Nolan] that question and he goes, "You're dead" before I could even get the question out of my mouth. "Hey Chris, am I?" "You're dead!" All right, cool.

David Tennant is confirmed to play the Riddler in the next Dark Knight film.

Kirsten Bell is also confirmed as Harley Quinn.

I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit on that. Nothing has been announced on Batman 3. Nothing. That is most definitely a fake.
Just look at them! there nothing like the characters as i recognise them! Just Look!
They just look silly! seriously the riddler dressed That way? Oh God No! I personally hate what they have done with the new batman movies, they fuck up the good old characters. the older movies are way better than this crap! they just keep fucking my childhood memories, first the transformers movie and now THIS! Oh god..

Totally Agree,
Hmm yeah I mean theres nothing to say he hadnt had a stay in arkham before and killing off does seem more logical

Riddler would be the top bet. On a side note, riddler teamed up with a similar guy (the question or something) at one point. Concidering Nolan wants to use characters that arn't really well known they might try and do a combo of those two.
Nolan stated he wants a batman that thinks alot more then in previous movies. so against riddler and the question that would be more likely. (the problem is... the last 2 batmans had really kick ass action aswell as thought... so if theres minimal action it'll suck)
also didn't they KILL two face in the second one? why do people keep saying "USE TWO FACE!" if he's already DEAD! Won't you also be crying later on if he is used "they retcon'd his death just to appease fans!"
Herle-quin couldn't easily be used... she was turned evil by the joker, fell in love with him and then let him free. To use herlequin you have to use joker.

btw. Because Bale was in the terminater movie, Nolan said he was putting off all stuff to do with batman untill 2010. So there shouldn't be any information released before then. Personally I still think David Tennant would be the perfect guy for riddler. Smart, puzzling attitude and looks like he has ADD and OCD at times

I think the Riddler would be awesome. I reckon casting James Marsden would be a good call, although the fact that he's already appeared in X-Men and Superman might count against him. Thing is, I don't really know how they'd make him a decent villain without somewhat copying the Joker.

1. Catwoman - Batman is being hunted not Bruce Wayne, so they could stray back to the original storyline where Catwoman is Batman's lover. So they would introduce the girl herself to end up showing affection to Bruce Wayne, but not go the entire Catwoman angle till the end of the movie, where maybe you catch a glimpe of Catwoman aka then Joker end of Batman begins.

2. Harley Quinn - This Batman hasn't followed story to the t anyway so I think they could easily do Quinn without Joker. There is nobody to say the Joker hasn't been in the AA before now for something or that Quinn was something he did on the side off screen. That and Scarecrow while insane is still alive and looking for revenge, so it's more then possible he could come up with something to turn Quinn down the same path. Honestly I think this would be the best follow up villian right now and I do think Quinn could do it.

3. The Penguin - I do think this would be an excellent way to go right now to deepen the entire Batman hated idea. Penguin did garner a lot of public support when he ran for Mayor of Gotham and was evil behind the scenes, I think that could be done again. A short fat, mob boss was said I think, maybe with just a messed up nose and possible a set of teeth he puts on when being evil sorta speak. Batman then takes out the mayor, Gotham hates him more, introduce side characters ect ect.

4. The Riddler - This would in my opinion be amazing, but not work yet. It has nothing to do with The Joker being in the last film, but purely because as was stated The Riddler is one of those non violent criminals. During the times they did The Riddler is when Batman actually WORKED WITH the police and I think right now that would be a lot harder to do with the whole, I am a murderer over his head. They would really have to put a twist on that to make it work I think.

5. Final Thoughts - Overall my personal opinion is that Penguin or Harley Quinn should be the main villian of this next movie, with the other working in the background and Catwoman being introduced as a lover interest, but not yet as Catwoman. I think it would work well and build for a perfect next movie. Do it by either maybe having Quinn be the villian showing flashbacks throughout the entire thing of times with the Joker we didn't know about and her desire to find and kill batman and have Penguin as the main villian that Batman fights. Or forget a real backstory with Quinn and have her be the bad gal while the side story introduces Penguin into the political world.

PS: Jim Carrey could do the Riddler again and I think he could do the Dark One well. Other then good ole Jack Nick I think he is the only former Batman Villain that could have done either Comedy/Dark

I'm sick of Dark Knight threads
Perfect answer for me, although I might scratch "threads".
I still don't get why everybody loved that movie so much.
In fact, all the people I talked to in real life weren't that impressed with it either.
I'm not saying it's a bad movie, I'm just saying it's no revelation.
The Thing, now that was a revelation if I ever saw one.

1) nolan already said (roughly) "we don't want to do catwoman or the penguin, catwoman has been done too many times already and the penguin is too unbelievable

2) Joker HASN'T been in Arkham before. If he had been, they would have had more information on him when they arested him in DK. When they arested him they said "he doesn't have a name..." etc. etc. He was just someone that pretty much appeared out of nowhere. If they had arrested him previously, they would have had more information on him then.

3) see 1

4) ... you have a point about maybe not the ridler concidering he's on the run from the police now as batman...

Riddler because he can be easily introduced by killing off the Joker in between prison transport or something
