I would choose Morgoth(Melkor), simply because he created hate itself. And also once commanded an army of thousands of orcs, evil men, dragons, Balrogs and demi-gods(Sauron was one). It took all the Valar(Gods) to take him down.

But since he's not an option, I'll go for Sauron.

Reasons:

1.He basically became the concept for Dark Lords in every fantasy/sci fi franchise.
2.Killed both the King of the Noldor, Gil Galad, and the King of Arnor and Gondor, Elendil.
3.Has a badass suit of armour.
4.Has a mace that can K.O. dozens of warriors at once.
5.Using the language he created causes fear in the hearts of those who hear it.
6.His lieutenants are immortal, and are themselves badass.

That's just my point of view. Others may differ.

Sauron.

HIS name, and even the place where he dwells are not to be said allowed.
HIS mere presence fouls the landscape around him.
HIS armies are huge.
HIS followers fear and worship him as a god.
HE is a symbol of absolute power and can corrupt anyone or anything he comes into contact with.

So much of the evil that occurred in Middle-Earth can be linked to Sauron's corruptive influence. Before, he reached M-E, Sauron had already been involved in the destruction of an entire race (Numenor). On arrival, he immediately sets a plan in motion to corrupt every human, dwarf and elf on M-E. He 'gifts' them with the knowledge of how to create powerful magical rings, thus allowing them to create the instruments of their own destruction!

HE is just evil personified.

I'm sorry, but Sauron is undoubtably the most badass and Dark of all these, quite frankly, pussy lords. No more to it!

Revan is a Vader wannabe, Palpatine is an old corpse, Sauron gets his power from a ring, and Ganondorf just cant take a hint.

I didn't put Darth Vader becasue, technically, he's not what I consider a "Dark Lord," mainly for the facts that A. he's not the highest authority in his domain (that would be Palpatine) and B. he is eventually redeemed.
Sauron didn't get his power FROM a ring. He put a large part of his power INTO The Ring so he could control the other races of middle-earth. Even without it, his powers were more than a match for anyone on the planet!

Well it was close between Sauron and Palpatine. What made me pick the Emperor was that he killed Samuel L jackson. If you can do that.... the sky's the limit for evil.

Arthas doesn't even deserve a place in this poll, wait 6 months and you'll have bunches of teenagers ***** slapping him around his castle and taking his clothes every day.

All Hail the Overlord! Leader of the Fire starters! Exploder of Melvin underbelly!

Thats about as far into the game as I got but I like a Dark Lord that does not take himself too seriously, to me thats more devilous. Plus his minions are more likeable and you have to love a jester that takes abuse like what I did to him.

I don't really think that Big Brother is a Dark Lord because most of the time a Dark Lord has some super/unnatural ablities that set him apart from other dictators.

Voted Sauron should have gone with "Other"- Melkor, from The Silmarillion Tales. Sauron and the Balrogs were his bitches.

Lord Voldemort.

A man so scary that even when he's dead people are so scared of him that they dare not utter his name.
They barely dare to talk about him at all, come to think of it.

Warmaster Horus. Because he set an entire Galaxy of men at one another's throats, crippled his father, killed his brothers and in essence caused the deaths of trillions. All for power.

Oh, and his armour was purest badass.

So evil, one name is just not enough.
The rules say no Satan.
one question? how can Revan be a Vader wannabe if Revan was alive several thousand years before Vader?
Vader was created before Revan.
no he was not. Revan was from KOTOR1 which takes place like 5000 years before the empire.
I give up.
good. that means i win. muahahahahahahaha!

Vader was created before Revan in real life and therefore Revan's character was inspired by Vader. And it's 4000 years, not 5000, but that's just nitpicking :p

Oh man, you get there first... I was going to say that... well I shall put this instead:
http://www.icanhasforce.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/star-wars-darth-revan.jpg

Haha, there is a better one but I couldnt find it... or couldnt be bothered finding it. XD
roflmao (i can't believe i just said that, i feel so dirty) anyway, that poster says the truth. Vader was a Pansie for going back over to the light.
Revan did as well in the canon ending of KotOR.
well yes in REAL time he was created first but in star wars term revan was first. oh and your right about the ending of KOTOR when he regets being a sith a shit. but he only says that if you say the right words to him.

Other: Ozzy Osbourne!

Sorry had to do it.
The Prince Of Darkness would bite Sauron's head off!

Fictional I'd go with Vader not Palpatine because he's just so much cooler.
