The question is a simple one for this thread, who is the better snake between the actors who where used for Solid Snake and Naked Snake?

Personally I think it was Heyter for two reasons, first is that he just seems to fit the characters better, which is probably why they kept brining him back over the years when a new game came out. Second is he actually talks. It's a little hard to think Sutherland is the better of the two when he barely says anything at all. I think Heyter may have spoken more on average in the opening mission of the previous "Solid" titles then Sutherland did in the whole game.

Hayter sounds ridiculous.

Sutherland sounds boring.

...

Fuck it. Imma go with Hayter.

For better or worse, Hayter's voice became Snake's voice. When people thought of Snake, that's the voice they thought of. Why they'd go and change it for the last game is utterly beyond me. It's not like those stupid throat-clearing noises Hayter uses to communicate put people off buying the previous games and it's not like Sutherland put in some kind of sterling performance. He just mumbled and grumbled and kept reminding me of fucking Jack Bauer.

I think this is why.

Pretty much agree. I've never heard Solid Bauer Snake, but Hayter's voice is, for better or worse, iconic. And not Adrian Pierce's baseball cap iconic, I mean actual iconic.

That was probably intentional since Kojima is a bit fan of 24 to the point he doesn't hid the fact it influenced his games.

The best Snake? Kurt Russell, naturally.

Followed by Dara O'Briain as Campbell.

Yeah...I really don't have a preference here.

That's kind of an unfair competition, since Hayter actually got to say more than five sentences. But then every voice performance in MGS5 was lame. It speaks volumes when the most memorable lines in your game are those of a woman humming.

To be fair, that was a pretty cool little moment.

I was trying to mark her during the fight, as I imagine many people did, heard that with the magic microphone and was like, "Hang on, really? Am I being fucking shot at by Red from Transistor?"

I voted for Hayter because of MGS3. But Sutherland isn't bad at all. In fact he's surprisingly good. TPP spoiler inbound:

When the real Big Boss appeared at the end of the game, I really liked Sutherland's voice for Snake. I think he would have done a splendid job if the protagonist was really Big Boss and if he had more to say.
So yeah, the problem with Sutherland is the characterization in MGS V. He didn't get a fair shot to be the real Snake. GZ barely counts.

Oh it's great. It's the one thing that gives her a bit of personality, and when you have her in the field it also indicates she has a target in sight.

It's just a shame I can't remember a single line of dialoge from the game, whether positively or negatively.

Not even this one?

I still get a little chuckle when I think of it.

Hayter worked well as Solid Snake because he managed to get that gruff badass style and, in the Big Boss games, managed to do the same while giving moments that kinda made you feel for the guy.
Hell, he managed to sell me on the fact that a Military Legend still thinks Santa is real [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x6mVUDB6Fw].

While silly as fuck, it does kinda make me feel for the guy, from what I've gathered, he was more or less raised by The Boss his entire life and now I can imagine a Young Big Boss as a little kid getting something cool from "Santa" while The Boss watches on.
That's kinda heartwarming as fuck and, the fact he still believes, kinda makes you wonder just how much of his life was spent outside of the battlefield.

Sutherland meanwhile I feel presents what happens when the little innocence that's left has been burned away and really kinda helps give the "The Time for Fun is over now" vibe MGS V was going for.
...I still just want to imagine how he looked screaming "ROCKET PUUUUUUUUUUNCH!" in the recording boot tho XD

Edit: Speaking of: This YouTube comment is great.

"You absolutely know that Big Boss never realized that there was a correlation between The Boss dying and him not getting any more Christmas presents signed "From Santa" until he was dying in MGS4

He just thought he'd been put on the naughty list"

How is this even a question? Its David Hayter.

He had this wonderful blend of playing it straight and hamming it up. Whilst Kiefer Sutherland I just found to be rather flat to be honest.

I honestly believe Kojima wanted Metal Gear to contain dialogue options, which is why Snakes inquiry sounds like much like how I imagine ones character in an Elder Scrolls game or Fallout.

*in the voice of David Hayter* "Dialogue options?"

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)
