Yay, another poll topic :)

So question
Can MMO(RPG/FPS/RTS/dating sim/cookie) go with Dead is Dead

Dead is Dead (or DiD) is play style that when your character dies you delete save file and start new game
Only excuse is game glitching, only then you can reload

So when your character dies, this is it- make new character and start all over
Making new character could either cost something or be free (if game is free to play)
Cloning/resurrecting character could be done, but at higher cost (if at all)
If you're careful enough you can play it indefinitely, if you're not then expect to lose time/money

What could be done with this?
Good, bad and horribly, horribly wrong?

I think what you're talking about is more commonly referred to as perma-death? Although maybe you're after something slightly different.

I was about to say that I don't think a perma-death MMO could become mainstream, but the large success of DayZ would suggest that maybe it could. DayZ could probably be considered an MMO anyway.

Having to pay to create a new character would almost certainly not work though. I would imagine that would turn almost everyone off, and with good reason.

The MMO would have to be a lot different to what people currently expect. There'd be no endgame as such (how could you raid or do PvP if your character died permanently?). So there's no real way that a WoW clone could ever have perma-death.

I played a game like this, once. Realm of the Mad God. It's sort of simplistic, and extremely frustrating. But it seemed to have a good number of players.

Wizardry online kind of does this. There is a way to survive dying, but if you don't do it properly, you do die. Which, I kind of like the idea. It'd make for a very interesting MMO, much akin to EVE, though maybe with less of an entry fee, ie, having been with the game since the beginning time.

Yeah, perma-death sounds a bit better :)

Also, I wasn't suggesting WoW clone
Sidestepping away from WoW is the right thing to do when making new MMO
The more game differs, the higher chance that game will attract new people (because old people already play WoW)

Also, to make things worse, but more logical, characters could be persistent
If you leave game your character stays there and follows pre-adjusted AI (for example retreat to your home as fast as possible, or any other options players would prefer)
Unprovoked attacks and character killing would become much larger issue
Would be cool if the biggest offenders would have ordered for assassinations

PvP could be possible if non-lethal weaponry would exist in the game
And it isn't like endgame isn't possible, it will be just different.
Yes, raids would become much harder, because you can't simply die and respawn
But that introduces more meaningful tactical decisions
Saving your character and ditching your team is viable option, or the opposite- sacrificing character for a team- also could be possible (and if you play with friends they could loot your body and return most valuable gear to your new character... or not)

One problem I could see here is that developers could disbalance game, so that any slightest mistake would mean losing character
Basically doing the same thing arcades did back in a days.

I could have sworn the WoD mmo was toying with this idea. Which makes sense considering it's supposed to be RP heavy.

I don't get why they don't implemented it in MMOs. They can even just make specialized servers that have this feature.

It would make grinding unnecessary and make the game reward players for their skill, rather than time put into the game going through the daily routine.

For DiD/perma-death to work in a MMO it would take a certain style of MMO and would be very hard to pull off with out pissing everyone off.

A level/item based MMO like most of the ones out there, this would be a horrible idea however if personal skill, planning, minimal resource management and the like were the key [and not your +9 sword of flaming death] then it could work, if done spot on right in a certain kind of MMO

Oh hardcore mode basically.

Well if its your cuppa tea, go for it mate.

Yeh the potential for griefing and frustration is too much for me personally, but this doesnt mean there ain't gamers who would love a more hardcore style of playing, i see people reminiscing about runescape all the time for this reason.

there's a few MMO's that do this already that i know of. path of exile has a permadeath mode called hardcore, and face of mankind has limited deaths by default but isn't nearly as popular. there's more, but i can't think of any off the top of my head.

Realm of the Mad God does this exact thing, of course they made the game for short fun bursts not to milk you month after month with sub fees.

It depends on the game if permadeath works. In a game like WoW it wouldn't work well, in my opinion it's to much trial and error (if you are new to the game or if you are in a new dungeon).

I would say yes to it only is that feature is another mode only. I can easily see myself being pissed off invested hours upon hours on my character only to be killed off from a simple mistake!

For the umpteenth billion time, there is an MMO like that. It's called "Haven and Hearth". It has pearmadeath and PVP.

I can't see it working for me (and likely many others), solely for connection issues alone. Maybe if it was popular enough and there were local servers, but most MMOs I know of don't seem to have them, and while they're playable with overseas servers, permadeath plus lag seems like a less than ideal situation.
