So, I just watched a couple of trailers for Dead Island on STEAM and I must say, the trailers look amazing. Then I popped over to YouTube and watched a couple of gameplay vids and... I was... unimpressed. The gameplay seemed uber repetitive and boring and the graphics were very 'meh', now granted these were relatively early builds that I watched but I still expected quite a bit more. Anyway, I was just wondering your thoughts about the game and am I being too judgemental?

Meh.

I saw an extended gameplay preview. It looked rather unremarkable. Not horrible, there was some potential, but it's not something I would pay full price for. Kinda reminded me of Borderlands, in the worst possible way.

Also, the player character makes a remark every single time you kill a zombie. They better fix that.

I wasn't too impressed by the gameplay, and I definitely wouldn't buy it to play it by yourself, but I can definitely see it being tons of fun with friends (kind of like how Left 4 Dead and Borderlands are).

I dont think it will be like L4D.. I think like others have said, it will play more like borderlands. That in and of itself is not a bad thing.

It looks interesting. However the real problem this game faces is that it is impossible for it to live up to the hype generated by the "sad trailer"

Comparing this game to L4D (so far) doesn't look to be an adequate enough comparison.

I, for one, will be getting this. It's a game made in heaven for me -- open world, zombie FPS with RPG elements and co-op.

Unless they have over 500,000 different lines of dialogue and taunts for each character ;) But yeah, that's prolly gonna be fixed.

I was uber excited when I watched the first trailer and had heard what the developers had been saying, telling me that this game would actually be about survival, struggling to fight even a few zombies and scavenging weapons, with barely any guns on the island.

Then I saw the gameplay video where the character had an electric machete...

...then I thought "Fuck that" and now I'm not buying it. Fuck you misleading trailer and devs,

fuck you.

The eaarly build was the one that was cancelled back in 2007, the only gameplay from the proper build has been from E3 2011 and the graphics for that are absolutely fantastic

You're using an electronic machete to survive. I also believe you can attach C4 to throwing knives. I'd simmer down a bit though I think the combat is what they really wanted to ge out and the survival stuff basically had to take a backseat for demos at E3 and such.

OT: I'm cautiously optimistic but I can't see myself being a day one purchaser.

Pretty much what he said, trailers and early dev interviews got me pumped, the gameplay made me sad.

Although I may pick it up cheap down the line (when it hits like £10) if me and my friends want a distraction for a weekend

So far I've been comparing it to Borderlands. I think it will be a decent single player game, but if you can get some friends together for co-op then I think it will be a lot of fun.

I love Zombie stuff... Complete Zombie fanboy here. So no matter how "meh" it turns out. I'll be "OMG my face melted off"

I really, really, REALLY want this to be some fantastic orgasmic zombie killing experience after seeing the trailer...
But I've also seen the gameplay and it looks like it will be an average to poor zombie killing experience... (I'm still getting it though... I can't resist the temptation of zombies)

I too think it will be similar to Dead Rising. A fairly proper survival-horror game, as opposed to the fragfest with survival and horror elements that is Left 4 Dead.

I think that the comparison to Left 4 Dead is apt, not because the gameplay is similar, but because the single player sucks ass, and the game is meant to be played coop to be fun, just like what Dead Island is looking like, and because both games have very arcady combat.

It looked to me like Oblivion with zombies and an uninspiring landscape, which is to say, not particularly impressive.

Compared to Dead Rising, which was more of a grind than I liked, and Left 4 Dead, which was one long shooting gallery, this game I can enjoy.

First-Person Action RPGs are always more fun, even if they are still using zombies, which I'm getting quite tired of to be frank.

I think it's going to be worth checking into when it comes out. The trailers have looked kind of cool, but I'm not quite sure if I've seen enough to form a concrete opinion, so color me cautiously optimistic.

I think it's amazing how much of a let down this game already is after that amazing trailer.

I don't think it will be the awesome, character-centric story based, game I was hoping for.

I think it'll be a) not released in Australia (Because we won't have our R18+ by September) b) a generic Zombie Shooter (Is it good or bad that there's such a thing) c) not aimed at me, but rather at the "Madden: Gears of Duty 2012" audience.
