May I ask what you listen to instead?
Yes you can, quite a large variety of genres (from disco to classical to rock, lots of things 'for the lulz'), but my favourite one's are jazz and rock in quite a few variates.
Among my favourite bands and artists are The Beatles, John Coltrane, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Freddie Hubbard, Micheal Bublè, Queen, CCR, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Miles Davis, but also Muse, Radiohead, the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno, the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack, the Aquabats, Streetlight Manifesto, even Nine Inch Nails.
I used to listen to a bit of metal, but I left that behind (still can't believe I used to listen to Dragonforce....). Today I
might turn on the occasional Metallica song, but that's about as metal as I get, I prefer to listen to other stuff nowadays.

I like ALL types of metal, except for some of the REALLY old stuff and most power metal, save for Children of Bodom.
I hope nobody says "But without the old stuff, you wouldn't have death metal now!"
Yeah yeah I know.
Don't worry about people who say that. I seriously doubt any of them listen to a lot of Victorian era music, or medieval music. Hell, I doubt they listen to 1940's Jazz and that's relatively recent. The music
they listen to wouldn't exist without those classics, it doesn't mean you have to listen to or like it now.
Just throw that in their face next time someone says it to you, make them look silly
Except when he/she actually
does listen to that music, like me. But it's still a stupid argument to make in the first place, so just don't pay attention to it at all.
