No, never. Whatever the crime. It seems to me like complete madness to kill another human being. I can't contemplate the government thinking they have the right. The sheer audacity shocks me. Whatever this person has done, nothing on earth gives you the right to decide whether he lives or dies. And there is of course the margin of error wherein a suspect can never be totally be proven guilty.

Its just the fact that any nation that's government was in any way christian is going to have it. admittedly Canada got there shit together and has outright banned it. they hate it so much they wont extradite people unless you agree not to give them the death penalty. and id be interested to hear what Australia and new zealand does because I'm not particularly versed in their laws.

Death penalty all the way, but only for criminals who are beyond any hope of contributing to society again in any positive way. Reason is is that society has already suffered from their crimes. Why should we suffer further by spending almost $35,000 a year to keep them incarcerated? I would rather see that money put towards education and child care so that we don't spawn anymore idiots.

I am for the death penalty, just because life in prison, or even life in prison without parole, is not certain. Hell, I remember hearing about a guy who killed his wife, pleaded guilty, got life without parole, and was let out for good behavior after 15 years. With crap like that happening, what's the deterrent to murder?

This problem could be easily solved by making a law that basically says, "Life in prison means life in prison. No exceptions."

There is no good answer to this question, I think. If you say yes, there's always the "oops, wrong guy, sorry." Saying that they should be in prison and regret what they've done for the rest of their lives doesn't apply to serial murderers. They obviously don't feel sorry if they keep killing people.

You're assuming that you can deter murder with executions; that doesn't match the historical record too well, especially when talking about domestic violence as in the case you mentioned. Murder in domestic situations is rarely premeditated, and as an impulse isn't subject to deterrence.

Besides, in premeditated cases murderers only go ahead with it if he/she doesn't think he/she'll be caught... all a death sentence does is perhaps delay things until the criminal comes up with his/her master plan to conceal the blame. (It doesn't even have to actually fool the cops... the plan only has to be good enough to fool the criminal planning the deed, and some of them aren't exactly the sharpest tools.)

Those that kill, rape, etc. either have something mentally wrong or are so desperate they dont care if they die. Many simply believe theres nothing left to live for and dont fear death. Whats the point killing others as examples wont deter people. They dont stop people doing these things in America why allow somethng like this?

I'm for the death penalty. I just can't see why people would rather give killers life sentences rather than just get rid of them. Points why I am for it include:

. With all the flawed legal systems, a killer might get life but simpaly be released a few years on parole.

. To punish people we send them to jail, a place where they get free food, free housing, and they are free from taxes. *Take that serial killers*

Really it should be the victim's family who should decide the punishment. I know if someone killed one of my family members I would want to see them fry.

If there is a violation of human rights involved with the victim and there is absolutley no doubt that the accused did it i say kill em but in other cases no

I do believe that there are a few crimes that could deserve it, but the fact that you can never be absolutely certain that you have the right guy makes me against it.

Once again taking the liberalist stance, a most definite no. There are very strong arguments on both sides about cost of keeping a prisoner and that they may well deserve to die, but in the end it is a living persons life, and no government or individual has any right to decide whether a person lives or dies like that. It is essentially murder as well anyway making the executioner no better than the person in the chair/noose/lethal injection table.

All for it, in cases of rape and premeditated murder with hard evidence(on camera, a whole store full of ppl saw you do it etc) Why should I pay for someone who is obviously deranged to live in a decent facility till they die(or more likely get out 15 years latter and do it again)

What does the death sentence actually achieve? Apart from more misery.
Vengeance, my dear boy, vengeance.
Funny, I thought that was the defence, not the prosecution.

And surely, if that's the case, most of our politicians should be serving them.

There's a difference between justice and vengeance. I for one will not give into some primal bloodlust.

And at everyone who says that prisons are decent facilities: I don't know where you're from but here in the U.S. prisons are over-crowded, bare-necessities, colorless and depressing. You seem to operate under the belief that it's possible to enjoy prison.

No.

The state should not be allowed to wield power over an individuals life.

Of course there are also several other reasons such as it being an ineffective deterrent, being impossible to exonerate a dead man, being a pointless act of cock eyed revenge etc. But the main reason is that the state should not have the power to premeditate any of its citizens deaths.

The only time I can see it being used, is against war criminals such as Saddam Hussein, because there was no real other way to deal with him. While alive, he'd keep making trouble.

EDIT: Oh and I was so about to make this topic yesterday but I was too tired. Plasmatizer, are you reading my thoughts? If you are, don't judge me. You would have done the same thing to that pigeon.
