It was hard and for a while fun. But it's boring... so very very boring once you've gotten used to it.

And I've never been all that big on trial/error gameplay.

I have never played it.

I have heard some very interesting things about it though.

Sadly, I have also heard that the lion's share of its much-praised difficulty stems from insifficient checkpoints and lack of quicksave/quickload function. So I have no interest in buying or playing the game.

Playing it now, finally.

I dont hate it. I am seeing its difficulty is overhyped though.

My biggest reason to dislike it isnt its difficulty, its the bad aiming system. Far too often you can be facing an enemy, and end up missing an attack, simply because your angle was off by 5 degrees.

Past that, its a solid game. I applaud the lack of checkpoints/save function that people have become far far far too reliant on. However, its not without its flaws, and could be so much better, and even more challenging. Given ATLUS recent troubles I wonder if we will ever see a sequel to it in order to improve upon the few flaws the game has.

I just timed my dragon run perfectly only to get one shotted by the giant knight.
I'm raging to bad to give a fair opinion, but I'll get back to this thread.

It's not that hard, just punishing. A lot like sexual fetishes, some gamers get off on losing several hours of progress to an unfair or unexpected death. I personally enjoyed the game, but once I put it down, the urge to pick it back up never came.
This is generally how I felt. I loved the game, but it really wasn't all that difficult, just punishing as all hell. After five or six levels, I was getting to the point where I could go through entirely new levels without dying once (though my super tank build may have had something to do with that).

In a way, though, punishing the player can be a good thing. A bad player shouldn't be able to brute force their way through a problem, and not only does Demon's Souls prevent you from doing that, but if you keep trying, it makes the game even harder for you. This is an excellent way to encourage players to play better, and is something that is needed in more current generation games.

The only punishment I thought was total bullshit was the final boss, who would
use an attack that would permanently drain one of your levels. At the point of the game where you're fighting him, this can be a solid hour's worth of souls to get back. It's an especially sore spot with me, because the first time he used it on me, I had just enough burden to be able to move in my gear. Needless to say, that fight didn't end well.

Two things.

1. From the sound of it, you don't know how to lock on. You don't have problems "facing the enemy" when you lock on. And if you do know how to lock on, what do you perceive as bad about it?

2. Demon's Souls is not made by Atlus. No one seems to understand this. It annoys me to no end. The game was developed by a Sony first-party developer in Japan called From Software. All Atlus did was publish the game in North America. And seeing how the game already had English text and voice-acting, I don't know how much Atlus really had to do to "localise" it.

This is not directed straight at you, but for added reference for the sake of this thread...

DEMON'S SOULS WAS NOT CREATED BY ATLUS AND AS SUCH HAS NO IMPACT ON THE POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A SEQUEL!!!

Fair enough. I do admit my ignorance to the development of the title.

As for locking on.. as I mentioned, I just started the game... As in yesterday, So ive actually played maybe 3 hours total, and yes theres plenty left for me to learn, locking on would be nice, so I will need to figure that out.

So yes, I will cheerfully withdraw my complaints.

I used to love it, but now it's kind of "meh." Mostly because of the boss battles. The levels themselves are fairly good, but getting killed because whatever boss you were fighting pulled some kind of super-attack out of its ass and having to restart the level because of it annoys me to no end. Especially because, if you get killed enough, you run out of moon grass and have to go farm for more.
