So I am on a game design course and I need to gather some research for my final assignment.
What I need to find out is what you guys think best suits a generic role, for example a hero, villain or sidekick... etc. Now I am talking about human characters only.

If you can think of your own ideal description, please post it. Many thanks in advance for anyone that posts. You would be doing me a really big favour.

The flawed/fallible character who is almost bordering/is an anti-hero.

I prefer a grittier design.

I guess if had to chose myself, I would pick the first one. Kinda like Duke Nukem.

Anyone else have an ideal character design preference for a game Hero?

Yey! I'm the only one [sub]so far[/sub] To vote for the Loner!
Thing is, If you're making a story, it's generally easier to make the Character flawed. Easier to write about, and not some suave bastard.
and i don't like the "Biker" Archetype Hero anyway so...... yeah
.

I like the middle two choices.
But how about a messy, unsocial loner type who is well mannered and can talk with confidence when required?

I'd like that.

Eliras Dawnstrider, level 15 Neutral Good Human Cleric of Pelor.

Unrelenting in her desire to right the world, she marches with the forces of both Law and Chaos, clad in shining plate with her Pelor-blessed morningstar and Lion's Shield, against the forces of Evil.

In her spare time she enjoys history, cooking, and researching foreign plant life.

My ideal for a hero is the rogue hero. He really isn't good with the ladies. He is no withdrawn intellectual. He isn't even some army trained hero. He is someone who has grown up on the streets and has had to fight all his life. Yet this doesn't make him a brooding emo hero. The thing he does best is fight and thats all he can do. He also hides the pain and slow insanity that is growing within him with a sadistic sense of humor.

I personally feel the relationship between the Hero and the Villain should be an almost equal one. where the Hero and the Villain are always outwitting each other. There should be a poer struggle between the two of them, where some point in their relationship one should somewhat out weight the others power.

I personally like a fairly blank slate for a main character(i.e Bioshock, Half-life), so I can feel more immersed in the role and also so your actions and characters reactions to those actions are what make you feel like the hero, rather then remote controlling some annoying hollywood handsome character shouting random one liners (i.e Mercenaries 2 and Just cause 2, if I hear that guy say "That was fun!" one more time I will throw my controller at the screen, you can't just tell the player there having fun! I was having fun and then he says it an it just annoys me)

anyway yeah, I like a a blank slate that I can inhabit and feel like a hero by the worlds reaction to me. I want to BE the hero, not control a hero.

Can I have a silent loner type with great use of hair gel, a long black quote and brunch with the queen?

I don't understand. Are you asking us what we think of when we hear the phrase "game hero," or are you asking us what sort of game hero archetype is our favorite?

Archetype. Which one appeals to you the most if you had to choose one of them as being a story?s main protagonist.

Like half-Soap McTavish (gritty, badass, always a 2nd plan) half-Freeman (does what needs to be done) and half-generic insecure guy.

Chuck it all together you get: A war criminal with SAS service under his belt trying to stop his town being taken over with Guerilla warfare tactics.

Now that would make a game :)

Out of these? Type 3, probably. He's as good as other three, but least represented. Type 1 is ubiquitous, Type 2 is not easy to do well (i.e. not whiny), Type 4 is just plain unlikeable MACHO. Would be good to have "suave superspy" kind of a protagonist once in a while.
