How is the campaign in Deus Ex: HR? To those who have bought it for full price, what are your impressions?
The campaign itself is a lot of fun, and makes for a very Deus Ex-y story.
Game-play is good, although probably a little too easy on the sneaky side.[Footnote]My non-lethal play-through especially was EPIC EASINESS.[/Footnote]
That said, it's miles better than the original, given how we have cover bases stealth, rather than blind opponents, etc. etc.
The hacking mini-game, surprisingly, hasn't gotten old yet, even though I've hacked 99.5% of everything in the game twice. Long as you set your mind to doing it with as few "help tools" as possible, it remains fun, and especially so if done under pressure.[Footnote]Hacking is done real-time; which means patrolling guards could catch you in the act.[/Footnote]
My first play-through lasted 31 hours, and was a combination of lethal and non-lethal take-downs, based on how I figured Jensen would feel about the people he was dealing with at the time.
Second play-through was non-lethal through-n-through, and lasted 27 hours. Felt a lot easier than the first, both because I already knew the layouts of maps and how to handle the bosses[footnote]Which can either be very easy or very hard, depending on how you choose to take them down. It's up to you in the end.[/footnote] and such, but also simply because, with a bit of timing, the non-lethal weapons can make getting past enemies incredibly easy.
Too easy, in fact, especially considering how you even get more XP for it.
The game does have some issues with crashing when running DX11. Personally, it crashed about 11 times during the first play-through, but vigorous quick-saving made it a non-issue.
I do however have a mate for whom it completely kills immersion, and thus the game, to be so abruptly ripped out, and so he chose to run it in DX9, at least until Eidos gets the issue fixed.
Frankly though, the game is no beauty, and really needs Tessellation from DX11 for the character models to in any way be considered humanoid.
But, on the other hand, Deus Ex was... well, ugly. Just straight up ugly. So I guess it's to be expected.
As for my experience with my purchase, it was very, very poor.
I'm one of those people who bought digitally, and didn't get the DLC from the Aug Edition.
TL;DR
I originally paid 33.96 UK pounds for the game, an amount which has gone up to 53.32, because I got my money back and bought a retail copy with working DLC code in GameStop.
I did that because I wanted the DLC, and even though that's a 60% increase in price, I'm still perfectly happy with the cost of the game.
So, overall, despite my poor experiences, the game itself is a must-play, and is definitely worth full price.
