I haven't played the game, and I have little evidence to base my opinions upon. I however can say with absolute certainty the emotions I experienced while watching the DMC5 trailer.

Before I do that however I want to help you understand me a bit better. I have always been a fan of Devil May Cry, I even 100% the second one, which is hailed as the worst of the franchise, and I agree. I was so impressed by the game's design, general message, and place as a work of art that it became a dream of mine to go into the Video Game business and work for Capcom, so that maybe one day I could work on DMC.

Being that I have no way of making any judgments on a game that has yet to be released, I will describe to you in detail what went through my mind when I watched that trailer.

When It started up my immediate thought was that it had lost the quality of set designs, that the Gothic, Castlevania, environment was now replaced with an urban one. I was somewhat excited by this, albeit cautious, because the thought of fighting demons through a red light district always felt like something Dante would do. Then we saw a mental asylum, with a figure, no doubt our hero (not necessarily Dante at this point)strung up like a sick prisoner/puppet. The scene itself was poetically powerful, but I was a bit annoyed because I had not seen Dante yet, and that person could not be him. Not the black haired, skinny prisoner, stripped of his dignity, as Dante would never allow himself to be.

Fine, I thought, maybe its like DMC4 again, and this fellow is another Nero. Another gifted soul who struggles against a world that is unaware of the Demonic influences. After all Dante met Trish and Lady, so there has to be other demon slaying meta-humans out there. I thought it might be cool, to see the way this person who was clearly not Dante, solved his problems. Which he illustrated by putting a cig' out on some poor bastard's face. Perhaps he only lit a smoke for that sole purpose. Perhaps where Dante was a cool and precise force, and Nero a vessel of retribution, Perhaps this new hero was that of pure hateful rage.

By this point I was most excited, watching how the character seemed to bridge Nero and Dante's style from the fourth installment. As the voice asked who this man was, and I still had no suspicions that it was my hero, I could only barely resist the urge to ask it myself.

Then the fateful words. "My Name Is Dante."

And My heart fell out of my chest. All at once the possibilities I had imagined, the glory I had fooled myself into seeing, and the dream of one day seeing my hand in the DMC franchise, along with my fragile strawberry-tart(watch Crank2 if you don't know what this is)hit the floor and shattered like precious crystal flutes. I was and still am crushed. Having my emotions toyed with, and being lead to excitement only to discover that I no longer recognized one of my personal heroes was crushing in a way I cannot describe. It was like watching the developers murder Dante right in front of me, and then skinning his face so that another impostor could wear it as a mask.

It is so hard to accept, in fact, that a part of me holds out in denial, that this is just some sick joke, the developers are just playing with me and seeing just how loyal I am to their franchise. I deny enough to hope that the new game will have a white haired Dante that I recognize, but it is a sliver of hope at best.

I have not played the game. I can only go on what I have seen and have felt. That is what I have left here, how that trailer made me feel.

Well then, I'll try to be more enthusiastic to make up for you.

I'm seriously tempted to ask you to cry moar, but that would be assholish of me. I mean, seriously...yes, it's Dante. That would be my natural assumption. And frankly, I don't see how you get off talking about developers "murdering Dante in front of you" while still professing to like DMC2 (I mean, I like that game, too, but he's a very different Dante from any of the other games).

I'll make up for the lost loyalty. I mean, <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.158447-Off-Topic-Reviews-Devil-May-Cry-series>that might be hard, but I think I can manage. Once I found out that this is a prequel to DMC3, rather than a straight-up reboot, my interest skyrocketed.

Frankly, I have to complain about you. You got my hopes up; I thought the game had been released already without my knowledge.

I don't think it's that big a deal, I welcome change as long as the game is good. The game is a prequel so one can hope that you feel a strong sense of progression as you become more like the Dante from the other games.
Remember how people hated Nero and then when the game came out everyone liked playing as him more than Dante?
and to be honest when I see him side-by-side with the old Dante the only difference I see is the hair and the fact that new Dante is a little thinner.
Also, $10 says that by the end of the game his hair will be white.

i plan to save judgment till i see some game-play and story info and maybe a demo if they put one out. its not wise to judge something on it looks alone. speaking of Nero i was hoping for another game with him as the lead character

For me it's far more imported that the story and gameplay is good. And honestly I have no problem with his new look

considering the character looks like an unpleasant ****, no, I don't approve.
if I can't connect to the character, I don't give a shit what happens to him and that makes me lose interest in the story.

Yeah, believe me, most DMC fans feel the same. I feel the same, but I have good reasons (I think) other than "Boo! They've messed with the legendary Dante!" like most fans out there are doing.
The part that angers me the most is that it is rumored that the Head developer of Ninja Theory or something (Someone important)looks almost EXACTLY like that emo Dante, clothes, hair and all. Needless to say, this makes him look like an arrogant douche: "Screw the cool Dante. I want the hero to look like me!". Also, apparently they based this new Dante off the things that America might like and familiarize themselves with due to the rumor that DMC games weren't that appealing to people over there. So...I guess they watched too much Twilight and assumed America was into scrawny, emo, pale skinned guys? There's also that other comment about trying to make Dante look cool. If I recall correctly, the new developers said: "If Dante, dressed as he was, walked into any bar outside of Tokyo, he?d get laughed out". To which I respond uselessly: Who cares?! If all video game characters were meant to fit into the real world, 90% of the video games would need a remake/reboot. Video games are meant to be silly like that! Just because I like Final Fantasy's gravity defying hair doesn't mean I'm gonna do my hair like that in real life.
Third, I hate the fact that he smokes. The original concept for Dante was 'a cool, stylish guy that didn't smoke'. This was due to the fact that the original developers didn't think smoking necessarily made someone look badass. But there ya go, go ahead and ruin the original idea. I'm looking at you, Jak and Daxter saga.

But seriously, after I finished watching the trailer and I got over the shock and blah blah, I drew my own conclusions:

1. He is Dante's son. A friend at work and I were discussing this. Black hair = Lady? I mean, it's not that clear but I believe Lady had a thing for Dante. So maybe this game takes place in the future. Just think of it as Dante being the new Sparda and this new kid taking Dante's place.
2. He is the original Dante we know before he taps into his demon powers completely. So he is TONY FREAKING REDGRAVE! So technically, this would take place before DMC3. And then assuming that he taps into his powers later on, then his hair color changes or something. I mean, it makes sense that this new emo Dante is reckless and whatnot. After all, Dante is/was an overpowered orphan that had no one around to explain to him what the heck was going on. This could also explain the lack of an official greatsword.
3. He is a clone. I don't know, clones are pretty popular when it comes to sequels/prequels. He shows signs of dementia or a severe headache or something during the trailer. So maybe he is forced to believe he is Dante? Or if you wanna take it a step further, he's Vergil?
4. He is just another Nero. You know, someone who's not Dante but tries too hard to be as cool as him. But then, this wouldn't work because we already have Nero for that.

You know, I don't mind them exploring more about Dante's past and explaining to us everything about his life and such. What I hate is when they do something like DMC4; they try to bring in someone new in order to bring more fans into the series. What you end up with is something like X-men: A bunch of characters, a bunch of spin offs, a plot that is truly impossible to follow, and never a happy ending. Like Yatzee said this week, a good story is only good when it has an ending. If you keep going, you run at the risk of drying that well dry. So...I'm okay with sequels as long as they make sense. Not just random sequels that are made to keep the money coming. Of course I'm gonna buy the game when it comes out; to say that the game is gonna suck would be a lie at this point. But I don't know. I'm not as excited about it as I thought I'd be.

No... just no. there are a couple iconic character's in gaming who's image you do not fuck with, or at least drastically change, and Dante is one of those people. Sure, as graphics got better, his image changed a little. However, he has stayed mostly the same and that is what we have grown accustomed to.

Plus he looks emo, which Dante should NEVER look like. The guy pulls a sword through his chest in every game because he is always pinned to a wall and wants to be a badass, not because he is trying to forget about his problems through large amounts of blood loss.

Don't get me wrong, I will certainly play this game when it is released. As for getting your hopes up, and you wanting to complain, to that I offer but a brisk, "Go make your own thread to complain on."

Though I will admit the title can be seen as misleading. This thread's purpose is merely to guage the reciption of the DMC5 trailer that was released at the Tokyo Game show.

Oh wait that's another fan who has the exact same issue I have, but is clearly handling it better and not contemplating mass murder... WITH BLEACH!... CUZ when they see the developer's horrified expression and his recently bleached hair, they will know why. THEY WILL KNOW WHY.

Heres the actual link.

Hmm it's an odd move, I didn't think the game series needed a reboot but there we go, I'm not really an expert in game design.
I hope it's not a prequel, I loved the mature feeling of DMC4 (damn the retracing pain in the ass) and I really want a good DMC.
No matter how good it is or how much I disagree with the initial artwork I am still going to play it because I am a massive fan of the series.

Hate it. Loathe it with the passion of a burning sun.

I liked Dante. I really did. And he was a badass that didn't smoke, he ate strawberry sundaes and pizza and didn't look as if he had been chewed on by Mundus.

The thing is...the main writer of DMC is not on board for this. So they're going to do whatever they want to an iconic figure. Sad. I'm thinking about not playing it because I am a fan of the series.

It's supposedly a prequel (his hair is turning white after all) but ...what about the previous prequels? Do we have more? They just made a mess of things to appeal to ..I don't even know who. Certainly not the fans.

I know what you mean. Especially about Dante not needing to smoke to be cool. And I smoke! To me that is like seeing my infant cousin or nephew lighting up a crack pipe.

What really gets me is that this appears to be some twisted PR stunt.

Not to mention that new Dante does indeed share a certain similarity to the game's Lead Designer. That's just fucking rude.

Well done you bastard! You killed my hero, you are wearing his face, and you did it just to get me to talk about Devil May Cry, which I already did at the drop of a hat and any mention of the strength of Love vs Hate.

I understand that they may be reaching out to a new audience, and frankly I feel the same about that that I feel about the westernized Death Note movie. That being that it is good because everyone needs to see this and hear it's message, but after all that, what about the fans that already loved the game, fans like me?

We have been loyal and this new design totally shafts us for it, for our love and attachment to the well established character... How is this fair?

This. I'd elaborate on my feelings but I've raged so hard on the Capcom Unity forums that I have nothing to fuel any long written rants anymore (admittedly, my "rage" is a little more snark and a little less genuine rage). I'll just stick with this: the artistic direction is shit, the choice in music is dreadful, and Ninja Theory's design philosophy is diametrically opposed to what is required to make action games, especially action games of Devil May Cry's calibre.

Oh, and if the interviews are to be believed, Ninja Theory hasn't the slightest fucking clue what makes Devil May Cry what it is. It's also been made apparent that Tameem Antoniades is a smug pseudo-intellectual dick.

I... eurgh...

It would have been forgiveable had it not been created around the wank of a tart lead designer.

They're going to lose just about everyone if they do this.

It's not. And what's more, they left so many questions unanswered. Is Vergil coming back? Is Nero Vergil's kid? What about Yamato? They probably never be answered now.

I didn't know about Dante wearing the lead designer's face. I don't swear often..but that's just a dick move. I mean, if he wants to be in games so much, why not make a new one instead of killing an old, respected, loved and established hero.

I wish no one would buy this DMC (I probably won't), but I know people will. PR stunt or not...it worked. Instead of praises though, I've only met fans who feel betrayed.

I know it looks bad right now but... a couple days ago i finished crisis core:FF7 on psp.Cloud and Sephiroth were always called the best characters ever etc. But after i played through crisis core i saw Cloud and Sephiroth's past.It makes them grow as characters and seem that much more epic.Previously unexplained things about them are revealed and it helps them seem much more real. Now back on topic, the DMC reboot could do just this, it could explain how Dante became the demon hunter we know and love today, and even make the older games more enjoyable because of how Dante's past will now be revealed. It could make the connection between Dante and the player much deeper. This COULD happen...or it could ruin the series.I guess we'll have to *takes glasses off* wait and DMC.
