GTA 1, 2 and 3 were a lot of fun.
4 I only "played" on the PC and they fucked up that port so god damn badly I couldn't believe it took them a year to do it.

Control the car with keyboard keys, but control the camera WITH THE DAMN MOUSE?!?!
The camera should FOLLOW THE CAR. You know, like every driving game in existence? It makes driving nearly impossible. It's MUCH easier to drive a real god damn car than in that game.

And just so many bloody bugs on the PC version. If you run a performance test then start the game, you get no sound effects! Whoops!

Oh and whats this? You need to make a rockstar social club membership! You already have a login for EA, Relic, Steam, Impulse and GFWL, so what's one more?!?

Like fucking honestly.

PS: Sorry for the amount of cursing in this post, I just wanted to get some frustrating things off my chest.

I really, really liked GTAIV. I understand why some people got bored with it; admittedly the missions could have been more creative (as they are in GTA Chinatown Wars, for example). But for me its world and its style were amazing, the way it really distilled New York down into an apparently remarkably accurate virtual representation (I haven't been there, but it's what I've been told), the way it filled in even hidden-away corners of the world that you might never see with details like Banksy art, even the random encounters with people as you pass by on the street. I found the game world outshone the lacklustre game design.

As much as I disagree with Heather Chaplin's rant that gamers are all "fucking adolescents", I still get sick of seeing the same tone of adolescent wish-fulfillment in every game - San Andreas and Saint's Row are cases in point. I don't mean they're bad games, I just mean that a game with a more adult tone rises above them, for me. Your mileage may vary.

I have to agree with Spot1990:

And LBP sucked, that's why it didn't get it. It's an essentially 2D platformer with a level design system. Big deal.
While I wouldn't say LBP sucked, it didn't seem as innovative as it was made out to be.

No. A game to distract you from having nothing to do. It was trying to be deep, and honestly took out some of the fun of the Grand Theft Auto formula.

No offense meant to fans of the series:D

Of all the games I played last year I would say Fallout 3 was the best. It was a little disappointing itself, it could've used more variety, but it was funner than GTA IV. GTA IV just felt like a movie mixed with a driving and dating simulator. It was far too linear compared to San Andreas or Vice City, once you got done with the story you could look around for cool jumps, but there wasn't really anything else to do. I was hoping their DLC would add a bit more replay value to it, but considering Lost and Damned is completely separate from the main game, that didn't happen.

Grand Theft Auto IV, while relatively samey in it's execution was an incredible game by any means. It had a very realized game world in which you were engrossed, a storyline that fit the genre pretty well and was just plain fun to play. I still sometimes boot it up and find new things.

Game of the year material though? I think it was an even match, perhaps lagging sightly behind the other contenders. Fallout had an incredibly immersive world as well, with a great storyline. L4D has an addictive quality that most can only find par with Heroin or World of Warcraft.

Grand Theft Auto IV was even with the rest of the greats of 2008 (By which I mean Fallout, L4D, Fable 2(ish), LBP) and really, the only thing that would put it above the former list is it's notoriaty, which honestly, I think is why it won. You go out on the street and ask ten strangers what Grand Theft Auto is, and then ask those same strangers about one of the other games listed, I promise more of them will know of/have played a GTA game. The series has an enduring contagiousness that pushes in it's favor.

Also, Spike TV I don't personally see as the zenith of video game awards anyways.

GTA: San Andreas was miles better imo. I liked Niko and the whole Eastern European thing, but sorry the variety in the previous games made GTA 4 look like a demo.

The game certainly was entertaining but no game of the year. My vote goes to Metal Gear Solid 4 as the best single player experience and Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the greatest mulitplayer game.

I'm Half and half, GTAIV pushed the limits of story, and graphics, but, there are more FUN games around, like Fallout 3 or Left 4 Dead

SSBB is all hype
For local MP Rockband takes the cake
It might be all hype but it's still a whole lot of fun to play, and that's what counts with those kind of games in my opinion.

Egh, I don't really think it should have been given GOTY, but coming from Spike TV it seems like a well selected choice.

For most of the Spike-viewing population, GTA IV would have been their cup-o'-jo.
