I heard a lot about it, seen comics dedicated to it, etc., all before I played Portal. I was expecting something, anything.

Companion Cube is an ugly piece of poop that you have to lug around for one level. It has no lines, no character and only serves to make your life harder. It was on screen for all of ten minutes and I fail to see how anyone can form an emotional connection with a brick in ten minutes. Heck, it's worse than a Pet Rock...
Don't dis the pet rock!

No, because:

A: It's a box.
B: It's a game. It doesn't really exist.
C: Seriously, it's just a box!
But Goddammit, it was the best box that didn't exist! Ever!

I only ever felt bad that I couldn't use it to protect myself from further slaughter. Luckily the incinerator was always at the END of the level.

Maybe a little after you go into that secert room. Although I guess I'm not feeling sorry for the cube, so much as the test subject.

Due to the misunderstanding that is the question, I will not answer in the poll.

I did not feel sorry for the companion cube: it's an inanimate object, and feels no pain. Rather, I was just sad. I had grown connected to my companion cube, and I didn't want to burn the thing. I wasn't sad for it, I was sad for myself.
I think that this summarizes my feelings for it, as well. The cube was my only friend in the test chamber (relatively speaking) and now I just killed him. I found the whole joke really funny, but I was sad, so I think I'll answer 'yes'.

No, I didn't care for the companion cube. That was why I found it funny and what I think is the biggest misunderstanding there is here.

You are not supposed to care for it. Why should you? It's a cube with a loveheart on it.

What makes it funny is how Glados is expecting you to love it. When you have to burn it, I didn't give a crap about it, but I delayed a bit because I found the dialogue in the situation highly humourous. It felt like the game was giving me a reverse psychology and made me think more about the cube and it's importance, whether burning it is the right thing to do. I was thinking about what I did for the rest of the game, even though it was just a cube with a love heart on it.

No. No one did really. It's like how no one was actually upset that the cake was a lie. It was a joke from the game and it kind of got a cult following. I actually have a shirt with the companion cube on it...

This. You're in a desolate science experiment with no idea how you got there, what it's purpose is, what year the game takes place or where on Earth it is. There is evidence of other subjects getting stuck in the walls, going insane and starving to death and traps which can easily kill you. Yet Glados uses a 1984 style brainwashing technique on you by telling you that all you care about are trivial objects such as cakes, cubes and your backup copy. Her lack of humanity really messed with my mind while playing.

I barely even noticed the Cube as special from the other cubes. Though, I have to admit, the scene where Glados tells you that you
killed it faster than anyone else made me jump a tad. Thing is, I was actually hurrying during that scene like mad, and just tossed the Cube in without thinking. It did make me feel a little sad.

But other than that, I didn't care for the Cube that much. I would often leave behind by mistake and end up getting stuck because of that.

My black and twisted heart against some cube? Not a contest - not even a second thought.

Yes - Its a sort of long story. At one point in that level i couldnt figure out what to do, then i saw that gap in the wall with the wall drawings and othersuch. I went in there with the Companion Cube, and read off the wall for a while, then crouched in a corner for about 10 minutes. Odd though it may seem, i drew SORT OFF attached at the time, but killing it wasnt 'that' bad...
Its always fun to go along with it though :)

If it wasn't sentient than how was it talking to me.

Anyways the fact that they can establish any kind of emotion with an inanimate object in a fake world is a testament to the design. So if you had even the slightest disappointment that you had to burn it then it is good storytelling.
