Well, considering there seems to be nothing but bandwaggoning here (either you're in the "bawww cube go bye bye" joke crowd or the "bah, ignorant fools who don't get the joke!" crowd following along with the people who made that point initially), I present to you an amusing fact: binary thinking is retarded. Now for something completely different.

When I played Portal and got to this level, I treated the Cube as a simple cube. I didn't pretend like it was some sentient thing trapped by an evil corporation inside of a box. What I did do was pretend Chell was a poor little girl with no friends, who was pretending that the Cube was actually sentient and her best friend. While it sounds retarded, it actually amused me to no end. Seriously, I was having a little montage in my head with "So Happy Together" playing in the background. No, I was not attached to the Cube myself, but pretending Chell was added a whole new level of funny to that level. Because of this, I indirectly became attached to the Cube for the hilarity I imagined.

So as you see, there are more reasons than "retards don't get the real joke" that some of us like the Cube.

Thank you for participating in this Aperture Science Computer Aided Enrichment Center Activity. Goodbye.
So is having a binary thought retarded when you ARE the one who made the point initially? And if I'd made a completely different point as my contribution in post 20 would it have altered the parameters of the ensuing thread?

That thing was just a pain in the ass.

Even putting myself into the state of mind Chell might be in, I felt no pity for the thing. The ASPHD, however...

I tossed it in without a second thought, its a cube not Aerith with a sword through her. Oh god I'm having FF7 flashbacks, or poor, poor Aerith. *cries*

Sorry, no love or tears here.
Nobody here seems to get the point...

The whole point of the companion cube was it showed Glados's lack of understanding about humanity, yet at the same time her vindictive and cruel nature.

She attempts to manipulate your emotions through her limited understanding of human bonding and emotion by using an inanimate object with a love heart on it.

That's why it was funny, you weren't meant to feel attached to the metal cube even though Glados thought you would be.

It's amazing how many people don't get this. It seemed obvious to me.
Don't forget the cake as well a lack of understanding human motivation

Of course not. Any affection for the companion cube is just a stupid meme or an artifact of affection for the game itself that arose incidentally or after the fact.

That's the joke in the game. Glados tries to make you feel bad for doing it, even though it's explicitly stated to be a cube of metal and nothing more.

no i just threw it in the incinerator, I was surprisied that Glados even comentated on it afterwards putting it in wasn't a time consuming job so wasn't sure why she would time them

No. Maybe if the game gave you the cube earlier and used it in more puzzles it would have been more significant. IIRC you only had it for like, 20 minutes.

I played FF7 before there was such a thing as Internet message boards to spoil RPGs. That was...intense when I saw it for the first time.

I felt nothing. You can't feel anything in a void after your first love is killed by your hands! All the Companion Cube did was help me get through a room and saved my life dozens of times. All it asked for in return was to stab me a little and I was willing to be that woman for it. Then GLaDOS forced us apart! That *****! I'll kill her!

I think part of the game's deeply dark humour comes from the fact that it is just a block, but when GLaDOS brings the guy up in conversation later on it's quite sad. Not full-on disturbing, but poignant.

Also, if you want to be "disturbed" by Portal, put a turret through a Material Emancipation Grill. Just try it.

Where's the "This is an actual poll?" option? It's a block that never moved or said anything so whatever. I always figured there were also probably a thousand more "companion cubes" anyways.

I can't say I felt true sadness when it died, but it did help the air of the game and I can imagine that under those circumstances, one would bond with the first thing they could attach persona to.

Oh yeah, I was proper tearing up.

Tried to throw myself into the furnace at the same time but I wouldn't fit.

So instead I bought a T-shirt with it on.

I felt bad for the turrets more than the stupid cube.

When I first knocked on down to hear it say "I love you"...

It's a lifeless object. I do not get attracted to lifeless objects and therefor didn't give a shit about the companion cube.

I knew I would have to euthanize the Cube eventually due to my friends raving about the game waaaay back in 2007. The year is now 2010 and I finally got around to playing the game, I heard the word "incinerator" and was heartbroken. I saw it coming but I didn't expect it. If that makes sense.
