This is only for people who actually bought COD, and I'm referring to the latest game of that franchise that you owned and played - so not playing a bit of multi at a friend's house.

I'm asking this because although CoD4 had a pretty good single player the single player has steadily gotten worse as the franchise has gotten more successful and MW3's single-player looks incredibly derivative and down right boring. it's like did they not realise that Crysis 2 had already blown up New York and it was much more interesting when they did it?

Most of the raving I hear about CoD is for the multiplayer, but for the Escapist community at least OF THOSE WHO PLAY COD I'm wondering how many player the campaign and what people think of it.

I dutifully played through Black Ops' single player and though it was fairly good up to the Gulag escape, it really got bad after that and the ending was complete tripe. Plus the gameplay in single-player had such little relevance to multiplayer i didn't even feel like it was a good introduction. I was also disappointed at their attempt at authentic 1960's weapons as they repeatedly introduced weapons that would not even exist as blue-prints for another 20 years, it felt much more like 1990's than 1960's.

But multiplayer was quite fun. Can't say much more than that. Reminds me of COD4.

So what's everyone else's opinion of COD single player relevance?

When I first got the game I went straight to playing multiplayer with my friends, then after having prestiged once I decided I would play the campaign to break up the game a little bit. I like the campaign personally, yes it was over the top and silly throughout almost the entire thing, but I enjoyed it. The game was not really ment to be period correct or have an amazing story or even to be original, it was made as filler for a multiplayer based game and I think they did a fine job with it.

I pretty much always play the single player first. It gives some experience with the controls and different guns.

For me, the campaign doesn't exist. I played it a bit once when my internet was down. CoD is no fun if you don't have a K/D.

I played all the SP and lots of MP. I pay full price for the game, I think I should get what I pay for and not miss out on half of the content it has to offer, regardless of peoples opinions of it. That's the same for every single COD game, I have owned every one at some point, finishing each campaign

I honestly regret playing the Black Ops single player campaign.
No Call of Duty campaign will ever be as good as Call of Duty 4.

I only play the multiplayer with friends, and even then the friends who don't have a Battlefield game.

I always play the campaign. Always.

In fact, I haven't even tried the multiplayer for CoD:WaW yet.

I couldn't give a flying fuck about the multiplayer, I want to know what happens with Price and his GLORIOUS MOUSTACHE! Oh and Soap too I guess.

I've played through single player several times on most of the games since MW. Currently on my second playthrough of WaW and then I'll move back to bloops (sic).

I don't see why not.
I find them amazing, and a good way to test the new mechanics/guns so I don't go into mulitplayer completely noobish.

Skipped playing COD entirely. Stopped playing COD after they stole my money with COD 3

Oh crap, I forgot Black Ops is the latest game.

Uh, well I played through the MW2 campaign, and it was OK. Over the top, rather short, nothing ground-breaking, but it was entertaining.

And as long as you have fun, that's fine. Right?

I skipped the campaign for Black Ops but then went back for the trophies after I had it for half a year. If there were no trophies I never would have played it.

I always buy a game for its singleplayer first, then I play the Multiplayer. Probably because Multiplayer wasn't an option for me for such a long time, causing me to not want to get games without a good singleplayer mode.

I've played the CoD series since the first one. Ever since CoD 2 and CoD 4: MW, the campaigns have been going downhill because they have not had a major AI change since CoD 2, they simply alter weapon and health statistics. The only difference in the way a foe acts on Medium and the way he acts on Veteran is how much damage he deals in a 2 second time frame. Honestly, I believe that to be lazy game design. Ultimately I blame Activision for that, because rather than give either studio enough time to actually re-tool the AI, they've been forcing both IW and Treyarch to churn out games that are almost identical to their predecessors. They're still relying on pre-scripted events for goodness sake! Do you know how frustrating it is to know exactly what's going to happen 7 times in a row on Veteran because as soon as you turn that one corner that you're FORCED to go down, instead of finding a creative route to get to your objective, there's going to be some tooled up bit of code that's going to ruin your day with a shotgun and make you try again for an 8th time? It's aggravating, and it makes you wonder why you play.

That's not to say that there haven't been some gems in the series since CoD 4: MW. For example, I loved the implementation of the Zombies mode in WaW, and I still say that WaW had the most balanced multiplayer of the series. MW2 was fun because of the co-op missions, and it had its moments in multiplayer, but there were a lot of balance problems with it. (For one thing, sprinting around like a jack-rabbit and knifing people should not be a viable strategy in an FPS!)I think Black Ops sought to rectify a lot of those mistakes - and I think it did - but it didn't correct the trend of totally unbelievable story mode, and I don't like that they took out the Operations missions that MW2 had.

I have to say though, if things continue as they've been going - especially with the single-player aspect - I'm never going to touch another CoD title. Until they actually try and push the series forward in terms of AI, I don't feel like paying for another title that's just a copy-paste of the last game with one or two little trinkets that could easily be a DLC for one of their pre-existing titles.

I played the Black Ops campaign for a little bit before I jumped into the multiplayer. I never finished it though I was less than impressed with it. I mean, I didn't expect the story to be too great but the gameplay wasn't even fun this time. I played through COD4's and Modern Warfare 2's single player modes several times, but Black Ops just didn't do it for me.
