The laser mechanism on mine broke too but we bought it second-hand in 2002. The one I got two years later for around £25, also second hand, is the one I still have today and although it doesn't get such regular usage as a few years ago, it still makes an appearance fairly often and works a treat although I thought it died a few months ago when it kept turning off after a few minutes but that was just because there was so much dust inside the damn thing that the fans couldn't move.

Both of my ps2 broke once... Because my sister tripped over it twice (with a year interval between) ...-_-"

Repaired the second with the spare part of the first, which is still working in perfect condition right now .

My PS2 never broke. Admittedly by the end it didn't play DVDs, and a few games, but it still worked on most games.
So, it no longer functioned as it originally did with any sort of reliability? That means it broke. I mean, granted, this is an informal poll, but you're already skewing the results by making a large leap past what most people would consider broken. I mean, by that logic, the time my PS2 would only play games after repeatedly inserting and ejecting the game over the course of around 45 minutes or so is somehow not broken because it did in fact play the game... eventually.

I honestly just gave up on the PS2 at that point. The only reason I own one today is because on a lunch break from work I ran over to the McDonalds across the street and won it from a code on my pack of fries.

My big original PS2 still works fine, bought it way back in 2002 I believe and only about a year ago I moved it from the main lounge and onto the TV in my bedroom. So yea, I've never had to replace it.

Also, I've never personally known of anyone having a PS2 break down on them, unless they dropped it down some stairs or something. There was one guy I worked with who left his on pause for like 2 weeks, or something crazy like that, and was talking like the machine was a peace of crap because it had the gall to burn out. I called him out for being a idiot for leaving it on all that time. But yea, I know that some would break down but I haven't known anyone personally. They were broken through accidents or negligence, they didn't wear out.

My PS2 never broke, but I did have to dust off the lens inside it once because it got too dirty. Worked fine after that.

Oh lawd.... I've had so many PS2's it isn't even funny. o_O"

My fat PS2 stopped reading discs.

My first Slim did the same.

One got broken when I was grounded (I was a kid, damnit. >_>). My mother thought it would be a jolly idea to put the PS2 in the trunk of her car to keep it away from me. A month of shit in the trunk banging into it later and it's dead

My dog SOMEHOW managed to knock one off the top of a shelf, onto a tile floor and proceeded to chew the hell out of it.

The nephew of my sister's lover spilt a glass of Coke inside the machine when he was switching discs.

My cat absolutely LOVED to lay down on my console when it was running. All the hair that got caught in the vent managed to overheat my system to the point of frying the electronics(Fucking cat killed my original Xbox that way as well).

2 more died of natural causes.

I've had shitty luck with the PS2.....

I got a PS2 the christmas of the year it launched in Norway (in 2000). I have not have it break even once. I still play on the big ol' PS2 every now and then, since my PS3-slim doesn't have PS2 backwards compatibility.

Rawr!

I dunno if it's related or not, but my PS2 has never been standing like in this picture. I always have it lying flat on the long end so there is no risk of it falling over.

I went through two, both died of their own accord; no physical encouragement from my own good self was required.

Third is still good, though it doesn't get booted up very often.

It never ever failed me in anyway... until after I got my PS3, when the disc tray decided that it didn't always want to come out. Maybe it felt rejected or something now that I had a new shinier toy to play with, or maybe its not a character in toy story and about 8 years of use just caught up on it a little bit.

My first one had huge trouble with blue-backs. My second one broke after about three years and my third one that I own now is doing ok. But I worry about it. I feel like stockpiling them.

Once, which given it's about 14 years old now is a testament to just how reliable these things are.

My original fat PS2 worked fine for about 7 years, then for some reason it went tits up. The disc tray wouldnt close or open properly, non of my games worked etc. This was just before I got my PS3 (I got an old one with backwards combatability) so I wasnt too bothered, so the PS2 went into the cupboard and was forgotten....

But then, when I realized certain PS2 games dont work on PS3, I sought out a new PS2. I got a slim which is still working perfectly. But then a while ago I decided to try my old fat PS2 and it works fine! Guess it just needed a rest...

So, yeah...now Ive got 2 PS2s :D
