Through the years gaming has gotten easier. Part of this has come from having a third dimension to dodge in, part of it is that characters no longer handle like a rocket powered shopping cart with a broken wheel. Some people say it is to deal with the number of people who suck and enjoy instant gratification over satisfaction of a job well done outnumbering the others. That said, what kind of difficulty do you like?

I demand that you put STALKER in the poll, right in the middle of Ninja Gaiden and Metal Slug 3.
Stalker falls under "Game designers are jerks" So I aint screwin with my poll especially since things are already set up in order of difficulty from highest to lowest.

I'd say I prefer a ninja gaiden level of difficulty, although I prefer less difficulty as the storyline improves for some reason.

So, apparently there's a game called Metal slug 3 which is harder than Ninja Gaiden. Now I'm scared.

Between Mario Galaxy and Megaman
Completely agree with you there as to the best level of difficulty. However there's nothing wrong with a game which is hard, as long as it isn't because of bad game design. Also, the more immersive the game is the better it is when challenging (eg. in STALKER the difficulty suits the game perfectly - and its a brilliant game!)

Well, my option isn't there.

I don't think you should die in games very often at all; it breaks immersion. However, simply not dying often doesn't mean the game isn't hard. You should have to put effort into not dying, and you should think that you're getting close to dying all the time, but... you don't.

It's hard to explain right. Basically, it feels difficult and tense, but it's really not. It's a hard thing to achieve, but that's the sweet spot, rarely achieved by games. Half-Life 2 did it relatively well, though, I thought.

It's all about your personal preferance.

Personaly I like the keyboard smashing frustration in a game, usaly makes me think harder or more tactfully, ie: Far cry2 on hardest.

but on the other hand it does break immersion like vdgmprgrmr said.

Megaman level. Hard enough to feel satisfying, but not so much that it feels like the game is cheating you, like Metal Slug and Ninja Gaiden.

I say Ninja Gaiden, because 1: it's just the right difficulty for me, and 2: the game is much more satisfying when you beat all of the nearly imposible sections. Then you truly do deserve that Klondyke bar.

Going to have to go with Megaman difficulty. Mario Galaxy was too easy, got 100% completion without even having to try too hard. And while I have beaten one or two Megaman games, they've trounced me often enough to make it a challenging (yet fun) ordeal.

That is why I put halo 3 up there. Remember, these are generalizations not specifics and I just used the most recent/famous game of that difficulty with the exceptions of Metal Slug 3 the hardest game ever and pokemon the easiest game ever.

Did you actually finish the STALKER campaign? Yes blah blah its buggy and so forth but the end of the STALKER games is almost impossible. Though I guess it does go under game designers are jerks as who actually thinks its a good idea to spawn ten enemies behind a wall with shotguns.
