In the case of women, definitely. They have to clean up well. Thats not me saying that, personally i don't give a damn. Men? We can pretty much get away with whatever but then you do need to have some talent as i think (especially in rock/metal) there is a lot more competition.
Its a sad fact of life, at the end of the day, music sells, sex sells. By combining the 2 (provocative dancing anyone?) record companies make much much more overall.

Not really. Look at Seal (guy who sang Kiss from a rose). He's got pox marks all over his face and is possibly one of the ugly guys when you first see him up close, but he makes damn good music.

the further you get from the pop music genre, the less attractive and the more skilled the signers are :)
Tom Waits would be a great example of exactly that premise.

I've never heard of Girls Aloud or The Saturdays before this thread. I feel a mixture of old and happy that I don't put up with, what I assume is, teeny-bopper shit music outside of Justin Beiber.
Ah, so I'm not alone in wondering what people were talking about when they tossed those names around. I could almost say I'd never encountered Bieber either, apart from the internet's relentless mockery of course, but one of his songs started playing on a store radio while I was picking up supplies one day - I literally could not leave the building fast enough.

Kids these days.
I know what you mean. Kid's are crazy.

But the only problem is that I'm 19 and therefore still a kid in all ways but legally.

It's a sad day when even teens think that teens are immature and like bad music that's too loud.
