Replace 'America' with anything else that is stereotyped. It will still be true.
Mmmhmm.

I hope you keep the beavers and the polar bears separate... I would think that could get a little messy otherwise.
Are you kidding me? Its a sport! We put colored collars on the bears, release beavers into cages and bet on...

On second thought, yes. We do keep them separated.

Yep. Think of cheese. Did you think of a yellow wedge with holes in it? You probably did. But most cheese doesn't look like that. You goddamned racist cheese bastard.

...everywhere I've traveled in the world has its share of mostly untrue stereotypes. Usually they simply reflect the state of the place's loudest vocal minority.

I've never been outside the U.S. (assuming that's what you meant by America) so I can't say. However, stereotyping isn't a problem in Europe or America or anywhere particular, it's a problem with people as a whole. I've never met anyone who doesn't stereotype others. I try my hardest not to, but I still do. I'm disappointed in myself when it happens, but it happens.

(Not all Americans are idiots, I promise. A lot of them perhaps, but not all of them)

Yes, I hate that my nation is overly-stereotyped, but I'm somewhat hypocritical because we all hold stereotypes of other countries as well. France is the most prominent example in my mind right this moment... But most of Western Europe feels the same way about France, so we're not alone in that stereotype. One thing we Americans do (generally, not always) is have this pre-determined image of German people as big narcissistic jerks despite having never met a German. I know German people, and they are very smart, outgoing, and kind people.

I hate when people from the US (which is what I am assuming you mean by American) are stereotyped together...since its impossible. Is everyone in Africa the same? Is everyone in Europe the same? What about Asia? Put a Russian next to a Japanese person, next to a Chinese person...are they all the same?
Maybe you can stereotype the US state by state (people from New York are loud mouthed, people from Florida are old, people from Texas hate gays) but compare a Texan to a New Yorker, very different, compare a Californian, to someone from Ohio, likely very different.

I wont say stereotypes are never common among a group of people, but to say such a broad range of people are the same is pretty bold. Hell, even people in New York are very varied between people in the city, people throughout long island, and people upstate...

And as long as Uganda is legally killing gays, you cant say we are the worst country by far.

What does it mean if I pictured a slice of yellow cheese in plastic?

I generally just try to remember that the American people aren't the same as the American government. One of them can be generally reasonable and decent half the time. The other is...well...American government. I'm not sure how you guys will do it but you really need to figure out a way to clean up that political ring, it's starting to smell really bad.

As long as I remember the difference, I generally don't over-stereotype Americans. At least not until I run into another stereotypical American, those ones are always 'fun' to deal with.

You are learning, young one. Now you must help others to see with unclouded eyes. The horrible beast that is cheese stereotyping must be stopped!

For what it's worth, the "average" person I found in Texas to pretty dumb. But then again, I saw the same trend back in Pakistan and England and the UAE. Stupid is blind to all color, deaf to all accents, and unheeding of all boundaries. Stupid just is--and she welcomes us all.

I know Germans who're total dicks, for balance there.

The stupidity of stereotyping in directly proportional to the ignorance of other cultures added to the amount of perceived self-importance.

I took another user's post and turned it into this thread. I forget his name, he can PM me and I'll edit it.
Yes.

I honestly don't think that most of the world gets just how huge the US is. We're so big, different regions might as well be different countries. Or... states. That was the original idea, after all. The culture on the East coast is entirely different from the culture on the West coast, and don't get me started on the South East or Texas - seriously, Texas feels more like a foreign nation to my upstate New York self than England does. That's what makes America cool - we're like five or six entirely different countries that got crammed together.

Now, if they wanted to stereotype different regions of the US, well, that's fine.

"Over-stereotyped"? Kind of redundant, don't you think? The whole point of a stereotype is that it's an exaggeration of the qualities of a large portion, even a majority, of the population.

So, yeah, we are. Just like everything that has a stereotype is "over-stereotyped".

Stereotypes are fun. Almost nothing is offensive unless you decide it is, unless it's just outright hateful.

I think we all know total dicks of every race and nationality.
