It bothers me immensely online, but in texts, not so much. What I do hate though is when people try to use text speak but only replace letters in the words, not make them shorter. Also when people use 'da' instead of 'the'. WHY?! I am irrationally pissed off now.
It's annoying when someone assumes you know what MW2 or ME2 is, and is too lazy to spell out a couple of friggin' words. It's more annoying when someone is condescending toward your intellect because you disagree with them and they can't even spell or use words properly. Aside from that, I suppose it's not too irritating. I have great respect for a few people who still "LOL." But rest assured, if you ever witness me LOL'ing, I'm making fun of someone.
Yeah there are too many games to assign acronyms to them all. For example, what's BF2 stand for? If you said anything other than Breath of Fire 2 then you are wrong but you aren't wrong, you just didn't read my mind. It's ridiculous.

TYPE THE WORDS OUT. It's easy even if you don't know how to type (I peck).

Textese is the slang term for it. It is what the texters call their awful writing.

I do not know, but I doubt the users of textese have enough brain cells to put that together.

Yes, I hate it.

I don't even understand it. It just takes me even MORE time to decode the text than it would if I were reading it normally.

Damned good point. I never used "textese" before I learned to type; I pecked as well.

Peck?
It means to type with a couple of fingers and the thumb for the spacebar and having to look at the keyboard alot. In other words, not knowing how to type properly.

outside of texting and videogames theres no excuse
There's just no excuse. It's lazy and frustrating.
ok maybe you don't get those two situations
in the middle of a game you want to spend the least time possible getting the message across so you can get back to the game, and most people can deal with this.

On the other side of the scale a text message is limited (256 chars?) so there is a budget for space taken, ergo reducing space taken to send a message saves you money in the long run.

Both of these are reasonable, sure its not great, but they are adequate reasons to all but the people on the highest of horses.
Most phone plans these days are unlimited texting anyway and texts are 160 chars. And as for video games, if you're in a spot that you're spelling like you just got a baseball bat to the face, you should probably be paying attention to the game.

It's lazy and creates poor habits. I've seen countless essays where people use text speak in a professional writing piece and the writers wonder why they fail.

I see where you're coming from but I'm an elitist about this :p

Shorthand isnt bad in a cell phone text if its not hard to decipher and i don't have to ask what you are asking or telling. Other then that they have no purpose.
