Poll: Do prefer western or eastern animation?

Of all the arguments between culture of Japan and America (or "the west" if you must) that has been either non-existance or has gotten the least screen time (as far as I know) is the argument between anime and cartoons. I don't know if people simply don't care about it as Manga vs. Marvel/DC or I simply haven't seen the culture war people have over Loony Toons and Astro Boy. What ever the case, what side are you on? On one hand, anime has achieved acceptance as an adult entertainment that Western animation has yet to get outside of Pixar and the Simpsons (and maybe other adult shows that branched from the Simpsons). On the other hand, anime dubbing has been hit and miss... and the hit to miss ratio is pretty much the same as real war (which is about 1 to 2600 in Iraq at the moment). Their is good anime (Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Kirby (subbed)), bad anime (Yu Gi Oh, Kirby (dubbed)), good cartoons (Animaniacs, Futurama, Batman: TAS), and bad cartoons (Captain Planet, The Batman). Which side are you on?

Eastern animation from the viewpoint of an American

I like things that can keep my interest, sometimes this is a western cartoon, sometimes its a eastern cartoon (Anime for those that think there special and believe Anime to be the god-tier of all animation super cool). Where its animated doesn't really matter, though the art-style does influence my final verdict on it, it doesn't matter where the animation was done

Also I liked the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. LETS DUEL!

Personally I prefer western animation, especially from the 90's. Batman: TAS was about as good as it gets. It had Mark Hamill!

No preference. There's good anime and there's good western animation. There's also crap anime and there's also crap western animation. I'm going to refrain from giving examples for fear of starting an argument.

I prefer anime for the most part. My favorite show is Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is fully and completely American; however, my country is plagued with an ignorant and just plain stupid idea that cartoons are for kids, which is both a cause an effect of most western cartoons. Spongebob is the perfect example; stupid, pointless, idiotic. It exemplifies what America thinks animation is for. Japan, on the other hand, understands the potential of animation as a serious storytelling medium. Nothing has made me cry like Clannad did, and very few things have blown my intellectual side away like Death Note.

So in short, I find that Japan is more capable of making good animation, because America is ignorant and stupid in their approach to animation.

There are a lot of great American animations: Pixar-everything (those guys are fuckin geniuses), Batman, Hey Arnold..

But seriously. Akira. Serial Experiments Lain. Ghost in the Shell. Dragon Ball. Anime on the whole just has so much more to say on life and how we deal with it than anything the West produces. It's not really their fault of course, most westerners just can't take animation that seriously. Their loss I guess.

True 'dat to Clannad. That show fucking rips your soul out and chews on it in front of you. I'm a pretty stoic guy but.. damn.

Doubled by the fact that I don't accept the last episode or two of the show as real, obviously his daughter and wife's death have driven him to insanity, if not killed him outright. He's hallucinating the entire thing. So fucking sad.

Also, if you think Death Note is intellectually stimulating, I could give you some recommendations that would leave you a vegetable.

Cowboy Bebop and all those fancy anime's out there (Castle in the Sky) for...well, anime I guess (and anything in that range as well).

For Western, I guess anything that's not Anglo-Japan-Francophonic made like Totally Spies set is fine with me. I mean honestly, half of that crap comes from Canada *embarrassed*.

I prefer Eastern animation over Western animation. Not by a large margin, but large enough. I find anime to be funnier, more dramatic, more thrilling... Eastern animation does a better job at making me feel than Western cartoons. I much prefer Western live-action television though, if that's any consolation.

I have to gripe. I loved that show as a kid. I haven't seen it in years so I don't remember if it was good or bad but that was a fun little piece of my childhood you're insulting. Boo to you!

I've never liked anime art style, and i've never liked anime cliches. So it's western animation for me. Even now we have such fine things as Phineas and Ferb and the Pixar stuff, and who could forget Hey Arnold or Angry Beavers?

But, sometimes it is best to know what from your childhood you can watch now and what is tinted by nostalgia.

When I was little I would have had to side with western animation. I liked cartoons from the late 80's and 90's. Today, I definately have to side with eastern animation. There (to me) seems to be a much better variety of animations from the east. It seems like everything in the west HAS to be a comedy and I can really only recall the old Batman series as the only cartoon that wasn't (intended to be) a comedy. I find that eastern animations are better written. And most important of all alot of eastern animations (not all) will only have one season. Although I get real sad when I finish a short series that I really enjoyed I am glad they ended it while it was still good. You've GOT to make the audience wanting more when you finish a show.
