I try not to spoil anything for anyone, even if it seems mundane to do so. I've had very few things spoiled for me but the times it happened, it sucked. I try to give other people the same courtesy I would want.

Once its like 5 years past the release of the material, give me a break, its not really a spoiler anymore, and people should not get pissy about it.

I've got to catch myself a lot of the time as I can get carried away with typing and saying things. Thankfully, I'm one to reread posts before posting so nothing slips through the cracks most of the time.

I don't think it matters if everyone has played it by now.

Aerith dies in FF7
Everyone knows about that so I don't see the point on a spoiler box.

But if someone, say spoiled the ending to Ass Creed Bro,I'b be mad.

Uncle Ben gets shot and dies
Its not the ending that messes with my head its what is said during the credits. Yes listen to the few lines of dialogue in the credits.

If I believe a particular point has become common knowledge, I feel no need to spoiler tag something. It isn't that it's hard, it just isn't really necessary. There is no exact time line that I use either. If, for example, I wanted to discuss Red Dead Redemption's ending right now in a thread pertaining to that game, I would not feel a need to spoiler tag anything. Were I to do the same thing in this thread, I would obviously put in a spoiler tag because the nature of the thread is such that reading it does not involve the implicit agreement that the plot will be discussed.

In the same vein, I can say that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father in this thread and I don't feel the need to use a tag as anyone who cares has known this for years if not decades.

You should always warn people. I had BioShock and Fight Club ruined for me in like a 3 week period a year or so ago.

And anything under...hmmm...I'd say a few years needs spoilers.
You know that made me feel like a total idiot after reading that. I've always thought Kong just climbed back down...

I would still say a few years for spoiler. Mainstream media can be spoiled earlier, because chances are if they haven't played it in the first few months they don't care. However, when it comes to things that not everyone has heard of have a warning just in case.

The Sixth Sense spoilers? No use by date. If anyway gives away that film to someone who hasn't seen it they are a terrible person.

Star Wars spoilers? Matrix? Probably.

I always ask a person if I'm not sure. I'd hate to be the guy who ruined the best part of a movie.

so do you think there comes a point in time for a game/movie/book what ever where you think its ok to name spoilers because (I'm not talking about famous ones ether those are hard to avoid) or do you think its just common courtsy not to use spoilers regardless of how old the work is?
I don't use them ever, and if other people do I'll forcibly shut them up if I have to.

I once blacklisted a band because one the members revealed a twist in a Tarantino film before I got to see it. This cost his group their record deal, and they broke up shortly afterward. Justice was served. Lesson, kids: spoilers don't pay.

Depends really, I try to not spoil anything. But a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

This isn't really making any sense. You are an apple.
My god that was hilarious!

Anyway, I try and do it all the time unless it's really obvious and well known. Emphasis on really.
Halo:Reach and Starcraft 2 was both spoiled for me. Reach within the month it was released and SC2 in the early parts of the month following it's release. >.>

I find this kind of funny because I got some angst pointed at my direction over spoiling that
You lose and the planet is taken over by the enemy
back when it was in development and the anticipation was brewing. I don't really feel sorry for them because even I, the ardent Halo-disliker that I am even knew that Reach was the Halo universe's equivalent of the Alamo. It was, correct me if I'm wrong even mentioned in the very first game!
Well... They mentioned that they were fleeing from Reach, with a Covenant Armada on their tail.
And marines throughout the Halo series often yell "This is for Reach" when they kill enemies.

Aaand theres the Halo book called:"The fall of Reach", centered around Reach and how the war plays out.

So yeah... That weren't really a spoiler. :p
Tell that to the people who I pissed off then lol

Spoilers are never dated.

I absolutely detest spoilers. What angers me most is when peopel talk about something without thinking that someone else around them could have possibly not read, seen, experienced it firsthand. For instance, I asked this one guy what the "Song of Ice and Fire" series was basically about...this is the explanation he gave me:

It's about this family in this fantasy universe where the kids have to raise themselves after their parents are killed amidst a war between these kingdoms. Right there someone just told me that Eddard Stark is killed. RIGHT BEFORE I EVEN OPENDED THE FIRST BOOK. Possibly Catelyn Stark as well. Not sure about that one. Not to mention that another person at a later date told me after I picked up the series "I think Jaime Lannister is going to kill the queen when the newest book comes out". Right there, busted suspense. I know this character lives throughout whatever turmoils and conflicts that could occur in books 2, 3, and 4. And I am only a hundred pages away from finishing A Game of Thrones.

In other words, people aren't extremely careful and considerate in how they word themselves. They just selfishly "talk" and say things out loud without being mindful of whether or not others want to read these and discover them for themselves. And there are no such things as "minor spoilers".

I will only spoil dated or very obsucre things that I know people haven't heard of, but only if the spoiler is funny. It's a conversation piece, then. See: Bionic Commando (2008).

TVTropes has an article on this, called "It Was His Sled" referring to Citizen Kane. By now, everyone should know "Rosebud" was his sled. Same way everyone should know Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father, or that HAL9000 tries to kill the humans and gets shut off by Dave, or that Spock dies.

These are no longer considered spoilers. Hell, I knew these things long before I'd even seen the movies.

I usually give something at least about five years before I go around spoiling things. Not that I do that, but I'd hardly see the big deal about spoiling the ending for lets say Kingdom Hearts. I mean really I think everyone who has wanted to play it has played through it by now so I don't feel bad about spoiling it.

I tend to not spoil things that have just been released though, but in my experience having something spoiled doesn't really ruin things for me. I had the last two Harry Potter books spoiled for me, but I still really enjoyed them.

EDIT:

That seems like a went a little overboard with your reaction. I don't think spoilers ruin everything because its more about how and why something happens and not just that it happens. Everyone knows by now that Snape kills Dumbledore, but its really not that simple because theres all sorts of things that lead up to it and parts that come after which explain why. If someone had explained those to me in detail I'd be a little mad, but someone just telling me a plot point doesn't make me mad.

I mean its really mostly the person's own fault for clicking on the thing clearly marked spoilers or a topic that has a title that clearly shows spoilers will be discussed. If you don't want things spoiled don't click on spoilers its that simple at least for the internet. All my conversations with friends about movies/games/tv shows usually go as follows if one of us hasn't seen it.

Me:"I haven't seen that."
Friend:"OK I won't spoil it for you."
Me:"Don't worry you can tell me about it I don't want to see it anyway."
Other Friend:"I still haven't seen it and I want to."
Me:"OK go in the other room while he tells me what happens if you don't want to know."
Other Friend:"That sounds like a fine arrangement to me tell me when you have finished discussing the spoilers."

I always try not to give away spoilers, no matter how old or well known. I have a friend who recently got spoiled about who Darth Vader is, so I know it's possible not to know. I also have been spoiled very often myself.
What I hate most is when people start shouting random spoilers as some kind of game. They always say they're picking very famous ones so not actually spoiling anything, but so far there has always been at least one in the lot that spoiled something for me.
Typically, I just don't talk about something. Like, I'll first ask someone if they've seen/read a specific thing, and if the answer is no, often I won't even tell them what it's about so I don't ruin any of it.

My younger brother is the opposite, he loved spoilers but he doesn't actually like reading, so he asks me how stuff ends just to spoil it for others. I always tell him stuff that's not actually true. He only picked it up with Harry Potter, I told him a character died when the fifth book came out, and next thing you know, it became a meme when that character actually did die in the sixth book. Well, I told him the character was raised then died again but I'm not sure if he believed me :p

EDIT: Oh I also think if you don't want to be spoiled there is some basic things to do or you only have yourself to blame. For instance don't go in Harry Potter forums after the book is released but before you finished it. Because of that, since from book 5 onwards I only read one chapter a day (I wanted to make it last, not ruin it by reading it all at once. To me reading is like eating, you need to do it slowly to savour it) I ended up spending months avoiding any place where I might get spoilers. But in the end I wasn't spoiled at all, because I was careful.
