I believe they were real. A lot of good points have been brought up here in support of the landings, and I feel that if it were a hoax it would have surfaced as such by now.

I'm a bit concerned that we haven't been making regular trips up there. Really, by now, we should have a space station up on the moon. But NASA got cold feet after Challenger and have been relegated to a glorified taxi service ever since.
If we're ever going to actually start a manned exploration of space, then putting a space station on the moon has to be a goal. And at this stage, I don't think that it's a logistical impossibility.
The problem here is that humans in general, or at least those who are front running the species, have their priorities out of order. Common sense says that we should be doing what we can to expand our culture into space, but people in the free world would rather be doing their own thing. In reality, most of the population, at least in the United States, is more concerned about the happenings of celebrities or getting laid (not a bad thing, mind you). As a result, those in power are doing what they can to stay in power, meaning they are catering to the misguided whims of the masses.
I know I'm straying a tad off topic here, but just thinking for the last couple minutes, I've formulated the idea that in terms of our long-term survival as a species, Democracy is doing more harm than good. People in general are stupid, and more or less need to be told what to do before they actively go out and do it. And when the people in power are being told what to do by the stupids, nothing gets done because no one knows what's really going on.
And, without getting into a huge political thing, our multi-party government system may be ultimately flawed. 8 years, the max term for a US president, is not enough time to get something big like this in the works. And when their time is up, there is so much conflict across party lines that any policies put in place could be dismantled by future presidents. We're seeing this happen right now with regards to things related to the conflicts in the Middle East.
I guess what I'm saying is that maybe a different type of government is what we need to get the ball rolling. It's been years since I took a social studies class, so the names of the various types of governments elude me, but basically we just need to get some level-headed people in office who can sit down and say, "This is what we need to do." Not a dictatorship, of course, those in power would still be held accountable. But just something different. To tie this into gaming, maybe something more like the Quarian government in Mass Effect.
*Note, I am not against the idea of Democracy or American freedoms etc...
