I don't care if a game is realistic or not as long as it plays by it's own rules. If the game is meant to be a "realistic" shooter i don't want to be able to fall 500ft and land without a scratch (and where the hell does he keep all those para-shoots...?), or have my small caliber weapons shooting through anything stronger than plywood. Same with Fantasy games if they're telling me this guy is human, i don't want to see him doing anything superhuman without an explicit magical explanation, unless he uses magic all the time, then i feel it's implied.

That said, the "realistic" mechanics should compliment the game-play and not just get in the way.

Put realism where it is best suited. For instance: take the recent dead rising 2. If the game were realistic: One zombie bite = infection. However both the gamers and devs realized how much this would limit the gameplay and decided to overlook that small detail.
However, I wouldnt be against a realistic zombie survival game. Using tools, skills, and an involved inventory to survive in a wider and more varied world, where one zombie bite could end it all, and you have to use your wits, rather than a motorcycle straped with dual chainsaws to survive.
Both sides of the coin, realism and fantasy, are fun if done right.

My favorite Sam and Max quote:

(On the Moon)

SAM: So let me get this straight. We can breathe here then?
MAX: I guess those candy-butt astronauts didn't have the stones to try it.
SAM: I could never say that about an astronaut.

So, no.

Well it isn't a must have but can sometimes be good and in the case of "Fallout: New Vegas" it may bring new awesomeness to a already good franchise.

I am sick of the "realism" (especially the "gritty" kind) most games seem to be going for in their art style. Everything has to look "cinematic" and all it does is show just how wide the uncanny valley is and how far we are from bridging it.

There are other art styles out there and I wish more games would explore them. I still love Valkyria Chronicles for its unique art approach: it's obviously manga-style art, but without most of that medium's excesses like crazy hair colours, ridiculous body proportions, or silly visual gags, then the whole thing is run through the CANVAS engine so the cutscenes look like a watercolour painting in motion. The green hills and forests and yellow deserts are also a nice change of pace from the usual browns and greys. But I would like to see more games that move away from both the gritty photorealism and the manga style.

Now, I can't provide fluffy bunny guns, but I have the next best thing. Fluffy bunnies with guns: Cat Shit One [http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8rg7e_cat-shit-one-trailer-idol-anime_shortfilms]. (Trust me, it's more awesome than it sounds.)

You can just refer to the "Extra Credits" explanation of the Uncanny Valley here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKTAJBQSm10) for my explanation.

The genre of the game, as well as it's type really do matter.
Example, a sci-fi fps should have a certain amount of realism, unless it is a parady. However, I am sick and tired of the brown and grey gritty games.

I find that if a game prides itself on being realistic, the tiniest of mistakes will break immersion for me. I'm playing Heavy Rain right now and the Uncanny Valley is really getting to me.

I like realism in games. It doesn't have to be perfect but if it was it'd be my favourite game. Such as;

You start off being born in first person and you can only control certain parts of your body. You grow up all in first person and finally go to school. You actually go to school every day and you could fail at school or w/e. Then you get into highschool and maybe college and so on so forth. But then you get drafted and have to go through all the training and the heartbreak of your family and then you are in war and it's one shot death and same for enemies and you can say w/e. You can also do w/e. No limits to this game. I may call it Life, or maybe Totally awesome Realistic game!...What was this thread about again?
