The term 'Hardcore' gets thrown around a lot - gamer, skater, porn, etc. - usually established to be opposite of 'Casual'. But is this really a distinction worth making? As always, please justify.

I'm not a fan of labels at all (including the term "gamer"), so no. It isn't important to me at all.

However, I would probably be classified as one. I tend to spend a great deal of my spare time playing games - very long ones. It isn't uncommon for me to play those large epic 40-50 hour types of games and then play another right after it, and another after that. So I'm pretty dedicated to it as a hobby or even passion, if you will.

However, these labels and terms are ultimately meaningless. To me at least. I play games, quite often. No more, no less.

I don't mind having a difference between "hardcore" gamers and "casual" gamers but some people are too strict on what makes a hardcore gamer. I call myself a softcore gamer because of that (and back in the Sega/PS1 days I was a casual gamer, as in I played games casually. I dislike how the term became synonymous with app games).

Of course.

They would have major rampant sex but have jobs and families so they only do it briefly every so often but keep most of their clothes on and hide under the sheets.

Most people call it "Soap Opera's".

My wife's a big fan of them.

I dont think I really give a shit.

I dont even know what I am suppused to be anymore, what with playing and enjoining stuff like I Wanna Be The Guy, Borderlands 2nd playthougts, and just putting the hardest difficulty at most games I play...

Only I also love stuff like Bejeweled peggle and zuma and COD (I am not sure if COD is Casual or Hardcore... Whatever it is, I love it).

Actually that last sentence is all that needs to be said. whenever a game is Casual or Hardcore I dont care as long as I enjoy and love it anyways! lol.

I don't know why someone who is perfectly happy enjoying their hobby to whatever degree they choose would want some sort of badge of honour or whatever on top of that.

They don't have to justify their hobby to anyone but themselves, neither does anyone else.

The only thing I care about is playing games I enjoy playing. I couldn't care less about some vaguely described definition being associated with me.

No, I don't care. I come to gaming because it lets me be batman or the hulk or luke skywalker with the switch of a disc and I go to forums to discuss whether or not a game sucks, what mechanics certain games have, gaming as a whole, and other various things, not so I can show people the "I wasted 90 minutes of my life" achievement.

Do I care normally? Not usually.
Do I care whenever dickheads insist that I cannot be because of xyz boobs? Then yeah.

It's not something I think about usually.

Blah blah blah hardcore.

If I say I like a video game a lot, and you say "well I bet I know more about the lore than you do", well than you must be hardcore.

The only thing that really matters is what I think about myself? Right? Yes.

I think the terms are good when used correctly it's just that a lot of ppl of both sides use the terms snobbishly towards each other.

Nope. I play what I have fun with and it doesn't really bother me what other people think.

I don't really care, I play games for fun and emotional investment in story, not score. Sure, high scores are nice but they're not the *main* reason I play.
That said, I'm viciously trying to tackle a high score in Pac-Man CE DX.

I probably qualify as a "hardcore" gamer, since almost all of my free time is spent gaming. But I really don't care, since I just play games to have fun, and nothing else.

lol who are the two people who voted yes? they kinda underestimated how lonely their opinion is.

In many ways, i probably am a hardcore gamer. i love difficult games that take a lot of time to master. However i am not a hardcore gamer in the sense that i spend all my life playing the same game. I really dont put a lot of time into individual games. I also dont play mainstream games like CoD. so the term means so many things nowadays and therefore i dont care if somebody calls me it or not.

Really, all the arbitrary labels are pretty stupid. "Gamer" "Hardcore" "Casual" "Real Geek"

And anyone who uses those kinds of labels in order to insult or demean somebody....ugh

Do I care? Yeah, I care. Because that's just the way I play games. I like to start new games on the hardest difficulty settings. I like to find the optimum builds and stat allocations in RPGs/MMORPGs. I like mastering and dominating with weapons people typically see as weak/underpowered in shooters. That stuff's fun to me.

Do I care if other people identify me as hardcore or casual? Nope. I really couldn't care less. I play games the way I play them because it's fun to me, not because I'm looking to earn a title.

...

Unless it's an MMORPG, and I'm looking to earn a literal title for my character.

As a gamer I believe the term is somewhat still relevant. The term "hardcore" gamer is often used by the media (even game reviewers) to describe big-budget games aimed at the core platforms (PS3/Xbox/PC)...it doesn't count stuff like iPhone games or browser/flash games obviously, I'm talking proper GAME games which are generally far deeper, more complicated and can take a while to finish. It can also be used to describe games that take on mature themes (violence/sex/etc).

More commonly referred to as "softcore", look it up.
