The term 'Hardcore' gets thrown around a lot - gamer, skater, porn, etc. - usually established to be opposite of 'Casual'. But is this really a distinction worth making? As always, please justify.
Yes it is a distinction worth making. I'm try to break into the independent gaming scene. What you deliver to casual gamers is completely different from what you deliver to mid-core or hardcore gamers.

I might use the term to describe the amount of time a person might spend playing games or how much dedication they have to them, but I don't think it's important. People can enjoy video games in whatever quantities they'd like regardless of titles.

Absolutely, gaming is one of my prime hobbies, I've got a near-top spec gaming computer pumping out three screens worth of content at me. I'm certainly not in the casual demographic or even the "medium" demographic. So to marketers and game creators, yes, I count as hardcore.

Do I give a shit? Not really. But someone out there making games does.

Do I care if I am one? No. I play many different games on many different platforms and that's what I enjoy.
Is there a distinction, yes. I would call one s hardcore gamer if it were their main hobby and enjoyed all different kinds of games. One would be a casual gamer if they gamed, but it wasn't a large part if their life or, gaming is a large apart of their life, but they only play one system or one/two genre/s of game.
Unfortunately though, the description of hardcore and casual is subjective, so it's only your opinion about yourself that matters.

No. Just how I don't care if people think I'm a 'hardcore' Sudoku-solver, a 'hardcore' reader, or a 'hardcore' biscuit-devourer.

I don't care about being a hardcore gamer. On the other hand, I don't think it's a pointless term, since it does describe a certain group of gamers.

What to vote for?

Do I care whenever dickheads insist that I cannot be because of xyz boobs? Then yeah.
But... but you can't! It's in the charter! We have a charter, by the way. Let me dig it out...

I think the cat peed on it.

And amended it, apparently.

Well, I don't think I have a leg to stand on here. You can be a hardcore gamer despite xyz boobs. In fact, it refers specifically to "xyz" boobs. Hm. Anyway, here's your badge. Potluck every other Thursday.

OT: Not a big fan of labels. The whole "hardcore/casual" thing smacks of elitism and tends to devolve into "No true Scotsman" arguments. Too loosely defined to have any practical use, too. I guess the answer is pretty obvious then.

Solitaire? Get out, n00b. We have no room for plebs. Come back if your thumbs ever become opposable and you somehow learn to play FreeCell.

I prefer the term "Hobby gamer". ;-)

I suppose it makes sense to distinguish between people who are 'into' a subject as opposed to people who just use it occasionally. I like watching movies but I'm not into movies as such. I suppose that makes me a casual watcher of movies. I would be disappointed if I only got to watch movies specifically designed for me, that would make the world of movies much less interesting.

I think the problem with the distinction is when marketing people makes assumptions about what people want to use. Some casual gamers may want to play some 'core' games, and some 'core' gamers may play some casual games. Any type of art can only become better by having variety.

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, but I would thank you not to refer to me as casual. For one, I suck at RTSs, am only moderately good at FPSs, don't always use a mic and treat people with civility online. Gamer as a term will do just fine. The distinction between casual gamers and other gamers (and I don't think all of that group is hardcore because that has its own connotations) is not a meaningless one, they are different markets and want different things.

People can do as they please. Though no, I do not see those terms as being needed or anything.

As someone else mentioned before though. The thing that sort of annoys me is when their used as insults. I'm called gamer, nerd, geek every once and a while by other people at school. I just sort of chuckle and nod my head.

In my mind, the real distinction is between an actual gamer and somebody else. Somebody who actually identifies themselves as a gamer is already "hardcore" enough for me. A lot of people I know have Xboxes and Playstations and play CoD and FIFA but would never characterise themselves as gamers, I'm sure most of us know people like that. Despite those not being "casual" titles, we really would never call them "hardcore" gamers. They're just interested in other things.

The terms "hardcore" and "casual" are so loosely defined that they might as well mean nothing.

So no, I don't care if I'm a "hardcore" gamer or not.

Real gangsters don't go around calling themselves gangsters.

Just like real hardcore gamers don't go around calling themselves hardcore.

If you really were hardcore, you'd let your skills do the talking, not your words.

I don't care if I am a hardcore, I play videogames. Then again I only ever use the Hardcore label as a way to refer to people who takes a game way too seriously, regardless of skill. If you get pissed because someone killed you, feel that you need to bring up K/D, want to 1v1 them, or feel that the way someone plays is wrong, even if you do the same thing, you are "hardcore."
