Of course.

They would have major rampant sex but have jobs and families so they only do it briefly every so often but keep most of their clothes on and hide under the sheets.

Most people call it "Soap Opera's".

My wife's a big fan of them.
not gonna lie, I had a slight chuckle in agreement.

OT: nope don't care for the term, I understand it's meaning and why it's used, but I don't really care if I'm called one or not, I tend to play single players 99% of the time so it doesn't matter to me what other people think/say.

I don't care a single bit about myself, but the fact that some people throw around the terms like they're the only people who play video games throws me off.

I can see a meaningful distinction for, "Hardcore" that can be made. Its useful to have a label that points out that this or that game is designed for an audience that is already familiar with the medium. However, hardcore gamer has taken on some annoying connotations. I suppose I would count as a hardcore gamer, but also a casual gamer, and everything inbetween. Basically I can see a use from the label, but that use is being diluted by asshattery.

I play games because they're fun and I enjoy the interactiveness of them. I don't consider myself to be hardcore in that regard but if someone else does, I don't really care.

As in sinking countless hours into it due to it being my main hobby, playing every genre of game & building custom computers to play games on?

Hells yes.

It is mainly used to differentiate between that kind of thing VS the browser-based flash games & shovelware as far as I can tell. Meh. The missus likes that stuff. Plus the Sims. Blegh!

Why must I be labeled just because I happen to play certain games for a certain amount of time? Why can't I just be me?

I'm honestly not that bothered. I'm a bit confused by the term since when people say that they're a hardcore gamer, I usually think of people who spend 20 hours or more playing some online PC FPS or some really intricate MMORPG when what they probably mean is play call of duty for about 3 hours a day. Maybe a solid definition is needed. As for myself, I don't know what to label myself, I guess "Retro" is the only term that fits the most but if I could sum up my gaming experience is that I play "Hardcore" games casually and casual game hardcore. I'm that guy that'll speed run Mario games and make sure my pokemon teams are the best whilst being that guy that'll play hardcore team death match and try to kill their own team right at the beginning with a rocket launcher or something.

In my opinion, if you go around declaring yourself a "hardcore" gamer you are also declaring that you are a giant douchebag.

Same here, I play for fun and it does not matter what label people put on me.

The term "hardcore" is usually just used as a marketing tool nowadays, maybe it always has been. I disagree that it means the opposite of "casual," rather it means that the marketing strategy being used revolves around attempting to set up the product being sold as something that runs counter to mainstream popular culture. Hence the target audience is invited to see themselves as rebellious or defiant for the act of buying a product.

I remember a Nissan commercial from around 2003, sadly I cannot find it on YouTube, but it had the new Frontier pickup busting through what appeared to be a steel wall, while the narrator asked the audience: "Are you Hardcore?" So, yeah, it is just a marketing ploy, folks, no real meaning to that word anymore.

Yeah, that's where they say stuff like 'can you adjust your taint? I can't see the TV' and 'I guess you can fuck me harder. If you really want to'
I would watch all of those! Would "I poop from there" be considered casual too...?

---

I thought people were trying to disassociate themselves from the term 'gamer' in general, why bother bringing in 'casual' or 'hardcore' when you don't even like the root term? Besides, it just seems like a pain in the ass logistically. I mean if you're going to keep those terms what would constitute 'casual' and what would constitute 'hardcore'? I mean, if you're only playing Black Ops 2, you would be pretty hardcore there but get your ass handed to you in something like Marvel vs Capcom.

I wonder where that would place me...what casual gamer would collect NES cartridges for example? But what hardcore gamer would avoid playing games on any difficulty higher than 'Normal' when they don't even play on 'Normal' to begin with? Not exactly hardcore...maybe the terms are just flawed to begin with or maybe I'm just over thinking this whole thread. I'm good at doing that.

I really don't care at all.

I'm a gamer. I play a lot of games, most of which I enjoy. I play games pretty regularly. I play at a variety of difficulty settings, in a variety of genres and on a mish-mash of systems. I play long-winded RPGs, pick-up-and-go flash games, stimulating art games, multiplayer-only games and first-person shooters. If I can run it, I'll play it. I play old games and new games. I play tiny indie games and massive AAA titles. I play on Xbox, Wii, PlayStation and PC and I really don't care what I'm labelled. I'm a gamer, and that's it.

I don't use that term anymore. I admit when I was younger (16-21) I was "a hardcore gamer" but really. Your either a gamer or you aren't, your level of dedication is cool, but much like a gamer score/trophy score not really important in the real world :D

Why are both options extremes?

It's a 'No' for me, but I don't find the term useless, just over-used.

I'm not super skilled at any games and I usually stop playing every 2 hours, but I almost play any genre. Every now and again I like to play something difficult so I don't mind losing over and over, as long as I can see a chance of winning.

no. the only justification for the term "hardcore gamer" is for said "hardcore gamers" to mock or belittle the "casual gamers"

as someone with a ridiculous amount of games (check my steam) and who plays a lot of games (mostly LoL nowadays 2-6 hours a day) viewing yourself as a gamer in general is kind of a sad thing to do. dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with playing games, but identifying yourself by entertainment is sad. if you think about it, its the same as viewing yourself as a "twi-hard" or a "bieleber". view yourself by your impact in the world, not on what in the world impacts you.
