Poll: Do you consider yourself a feminist?

There will never be total equality between the sexes because women have to invest alot of time in sexual reproduction and men just have to 'make whoopie!' once. Which leads to a whole lot of issues which will always skew one way or the other, especially when you involve stupid people of both sexes.

That's not to say equality isn't a nice ideal, its just that we're human and human's are assholes. Because we've all got one.

I'm a socialist, and I am in favor of equality of all people.

I don't feel that positive discrimination contributes anything to society though.

What i think of when i hear "Feminist" is 2 of my friends in high school. They keep going on and on about how "women should be appriciated because they are so much better than men" (alittle exagerated but whatever... and im sorry my english isn't the best)
Those "feminists" are incredibily annoying. i cannot stand them some times. If they want society to evolve they shouldn't think along the lines of women being treated better than men which is what i can understand from my friends, but to pursue equality. If women were to be treated better than men it would after some years end up the same way but with the men as the oppresed people.

i know i kind of rumbled on there. My point is that some feminists go to extremes and want women to be better than men while in reality the difference is so small now that it isn't realy a major difference. Equality should be pursued instead. so yeah, i support equality and dislike femists like the ones i mentioned.

1st wave feminism:

Women should get the vote and equal voting rights to men, which will eventually lead to automatic equal rights.

2nd wave feminism:

Women aren't going to get equality unless they campaign for it, so equal pay acts, gender discrimination acts etc.

3rd wave feminism:

Women have equal rights in society, but in the home they're still treated as inferiors. Men give women the budget for spending, and women do most of the cooking and cleaning. Lots of unpaid labour supplied by women, even if they're working too. Women want the 'private' to be 'public' so this doesn't happen.

4th wave feminism:

Men are undesirable for society because they have clouded judgement and values due to biology such as overcompetitevness and a lack of empathy. Women should rule the earth with men simply a means of reproduction (like the Amazons).



Most people going to fit into the 2nd bracket, although if you think hard you might find yourself only falling into the 1st if you've ever been rejected from a job because the boss simply wants to make the office look more genderly diverse etc, or you might be in the 3rd if you don't care for traditional home values.

The problem is, that isn't what feminism is anymore.

I prefer the term equalist.

I very much agree with this. I also have been calling myself an Equalist for some time, since I support equal rights for everyone. The only thing the law should be judging someone on is their actions, not sex, race, gender or anything else like that.

For most of my life, since I became aware of these issues back in middle school, I have considered myself a feminist. But it became uncomfortable to identify as such because of the vocal minority of 'women first, men are pigs' subsect that are what many people first think of when you say the word these days.

Well mabye if they just want women to stay at home and rear the children in a traditional way while they go and earn the money, and that's what they percieve at not being a feminist. I mean 'make me a sammich' doesn't scream feminist.

Feminism doesn't mean equality...but as you said; for the sake of this thread, I'm a feminist.

I can only hope the males who chose "no" didn't read the opening post and are simply against "man hating"...otherwise it's a sad world.

Yes I am a feminist, I believe men and women should be considered more or less equal. I don't really consider the "angry man-hating feminists" (as you put it) as actual feminists, I consider them assholes (Is there a female equivalent to the word Chauvinist?).

I'm in favour of equal rights, so yeah feminist.

Should have read the whole OP first then my no would have been a yes(male).

Hate the use of the word feminism as a word for equal rights though, because it really isn't. It's a word for female rights. Sure it is a step towards equal rights but I much more prefer to say that I am for equal rights then to say that I am an feminist.

EDIT: Saw that more people had brought up the same thing and I too would like to name me an equalist.

Equal rights, equal opportunities, equal pay for the same amount of work.

Here in Denmark all jobs pay the same per hour no matter if you are a man or a woman.

A survey that was done not too long ago that showed women apply for a job if they, on average, forfill 7-8 of the requirements for the job. Men apply if they forfill 2-3.
So that is not the fault of men.

For the sake of this pole, I'm talking about "Liberal Feminism". Roughly meaning you support equal rights for men and women.

Well surely by that definition you'd have to be a total dick to say no. I think that's a fair distance short of what I'd call feminism. (FWIW, I'm in the Male, yes camp, and would be by a lot more radical definition too!)

In general women shouldn't be treated as less than men, that's probably the easiest way to put it for me.

All that said, I believe people are people and should be judged on an individual basis. The less annoying a person or group makes themselves to me, the more I tend to like and support them.

Yeah, we can make broad statements stretching across the entirety of the Earth, but ultimately it's specific things we have to deal with that take our time.
