Just had a rather random thought, but do you cuss around your parents? To add a bit of context, allow me to say that I agree with the following quote from comedian Lewis Black:

There's no such thing as a bad word. We are all adults, and these are the words that we use to express anger, rage, and frustration.
Though I also like to add "and sometimes just for the fuck of it." :p

Anyways, despite my agreeing with this - that they're just words, not bad words - I still find it hard/awkward to cuss around my parents. How about you, my fellow Escapists?

Yep, I curse in front of her just as much as anyone else who's hit puberty. That's where I draw the line, though.

Hmm I use mild cuss words like "crap" and "ass". I don't think I've ever said fuck or shit around them, if I did it's because I was angry and ranting about something and it just slipped out.

I don't know what it is, I just don't feel comfortable cussing around them. Or drinking. Or smoking.

Yes I do but not excessively. Obviously there was a time where I would be chastised for swearing in front of them but now that I'm 26, they're not bothered. And I only really ever do it to highlight a point.

There's a certain freedom in it for them as well. My Dad never used to swear, at least not in front of my brother and I. With us being adults now, he can swear all he wants. He doesn't do it that much but at least he doesn't have to watch his language in front of us anymore.

I do it all the time, my mum is probably the most lax, yet good parent there is. I can say pretty much everything except **** around her and she's fine with it. But, I know that saying fuck and shit in nearly every sentence makes you sound like an utter douche, so I try to keep it for the right situations even though nothing's going to happen if I don't. I was just raised to think that, and it's cool.

I try not to- my semi-puritan upbringing makes it feel too weird to do it. My mom cusses all the time, but my dad only reacts when I say "damn."

I try not to cuss too much in general, and being with my parents is the epitome of that feeling

Both my parents cuss like sailors. I try not to around my grandmas though, or at least to refrain from f-bombs at a bare minimum.

Now that I'm an adult (shut up, I am so), I swear in front of my parents all the time.

It's amazing how much they don't seem to care :D

Heck no, my parents are about as English upper-middle class as you can get. I can no more imagine me swearing in-front of them, or vice versa, than us speaking to each other in Mandarin Chinese.

I use the same kind of language around my parents I use with anyone else, but I don't cuss, it's just not the way I talk.
Unless I'm very upset.

I can have discussions about such things with my mom, though, the concept of Hell, or the use of the word '******', but that's not cussing. There are no 'bad words', it's all about the context.

My mom uses the expression 'Kauhistuksen kanahäkki' ('A chicken coop of terror') when something is wrong, so that expression startles me, because when she uses that something is wrong.

I don't swear in polite company, and my mum is usually polite company. I'll only swear around her in rare cases. My dad, though, well, we swear in front of each other... we just use rhyming slang to do so.

No, I like having a group of people who I don't swear around. It's useful for me.

Not swearing around my family made it very easy to not swear at work or in casual conversation.
Now I don't live with my family, I swear far too much.

Who knows... that may actually happen... -_-

OT: I don't swear all that often, and less so in front of the folks. I still swear in front of them though, and it always surprises me when they swear, since they generally don't... not even in Chinese...

Oddly, I swear more in Japanese (if they can be considered to be cusses...)

there comes a point where you realise you are the equal of your father or mother. You understand the "respect" they wanted to instil in you.
E.G: when it's needed use it

Never, though that's mostly because I never cursed at all until recently. I actually use fake swear words in the situations most people find it hard to control their swearing, so I doubt it will ever be an issue. I swear only when I choose to.

I usually try not to. Even if I am old enough, my mom still considers it disrespectful and she'd prefer we didn't in front of her.

I don't cuss.

That is to say I'll let slip the occasional word for comedy or when singing a song.
But it's not part of my everyday speech at all.

If the situation calls for it, my surroundings are completely irrelevant to my use of swearing. I speak the same way to my friends, my boss, and my parents; specifically, brutally honest with a side order of sarcasm.

I really don't care what people think about it.

That said, I will reign in my tongue if people ask me to, especially when it's parents not wanting their children (most commonly my cousins, most of whom are in the 8-13 range now) to hear it. I don't particularly care if I offend someone, but I'm not going to deliberately fail to comply with such a simple request.
