Duh, of course I do. Heck, most food doesn't even have an expiration date, it has a sell by date. It's supposed to be good for at least a week past the date. Even those foods that do have an actual expiration date still have some wiggle room planned in. It's not like the know the very second the stuff is gonna go bad. For most things it can vary by several days depending on even fairly minor differences in the conditions it's kept in. Of course they put the very earliest possible point as the date, so you're almost certain to have perfectly good food if it's just a day or two past the expiration date.

Even with all that, even if your food is actually bad, the vast majority of food poisoning in healthy adults just results in a very minor case of diarrhea, which, while certainly unpleasant, is hardly the end of the frickin' world despite what some people seem to believe.

So again, I will absolutely eat anything that's past its date. I just trust my senses more than some paranoid make-believe date some dude made up to cover his ass.

Use by dates are just a guide and the cover the company's back in the world of sue sue sue.

I'd eat bread if it was out, as long as it smelt ok, has no furry green bits etc. same goes for all other foods except milk.

Sometimes, too, its just so you throw it away, buy more and make more profit for the company when the product is perfectly fine.

A look or two, and an investigatory sniff will usually decide whether or not I eat an expired food. I feel that it's wasteful, otherwise.

Food with a best before date is the recconmended time it has before the product is out of its prime, it might not be as good as if you ate it a day or so earlier, but still edible, though you should check for mould, following the storage instruction ensures it lasts as long as it says it does.

A use by date is risky, espcially on meat products, some infectious bugs thrive on them espcially bird meat, probally should avoid meat after its use by date and throw it out.

Stuff like Pop is fair game though, the worst that could happen is lumps (if its pure orange juice) or the loss of fizz. (in the case of coke) probally would only take a test swig first and see if anything happens in 5 mins, stuff laced with sugar or preservatives are surprisingly sturdy. (hence the word preservatives)

=) Student life means the use by date is really just a guide line on most things apart from chicken... use that crap 2-3 days before the use by date to avoid the stinky chicked

depends on what it is but generally, yes i do. if bread has gone a bit mouldy i'll scrape it off it'll be fine, especially if i'm toasting it. i'm not very trusting of milk, been caught out too many times

Sure, im just careful with it.

Hairy? Throw away.
Over a week past? Throw away.
Smells funny? Throw away.

There are some variables of course but those are on an item by item basis.

I just cant bring myself to eat i dunno bread that's over the expiration date even if its just a day.
if its bread just cut off any moldy bits and toast it. If its meat I tend to be a lot more cautious.

At the end of the day the expiration date is just an estimate, a very close one but an estimate none the less.

Forgot one small thing, if you think you're wasting food, try to reorder the fridge so that the older stuff is at the front so that it is consumed first and then you'll still have perfectly good food for the days later. if anything, anything that spoils easy should be consumed first, with food like eggs you can cook it with ham or somthing, sinking 2 pieces of food. (Man, secondry school cooking class memories is awesome, the old at front-new at back thing is called Stock rotation)

The swapping thing can save your home a bit of money on food bills, it'll help, sorry for going off topic.
