Poll: Do you ever buy the sequels to games without ever playing the originals?

I bought Uncharted 2 without playing the first game. I STILL haven't played Drake's Fortune.

I'd say Persona 3 as well but since it's a stand alone story it doesn't really count.

I bought Halo 3 having only ever played Halo at a friends. Still regret that.

I bought Fallout 3 without having played any previous Fallout.

I played FF13 without ever playing the originals. I dont think its essential to go back and play them but if you like a game in the series then its always worth a look back.

Every Final Fantasy is different. Its more of just a single epic story in each game. (Except with a few like FFX-2 etc.)

Ive bought a few like Breath of Fire 2 and Final Fantasy VII back in the day, the most recent one being Monster Hunter Tri without playing any of the earlier ones. Though i have to say id guess at least 80% of the people who bought Fallout 3 hadnt played the originals which could help explain so many Yes answers on this post

I never played Just Cause, yet I've got a whopping 50% logged into the second one; I never even heard of Red Dead Revolver, yet I finished Redemption; I only ever played GTAIV; I bought Rise of Legends before I brought Rise of Nations; I played Battlefield 2142 and Bad company before I played Battlefield 2; I only ever got the Modern warfare games from the CoD franchise; I had Fable 2 before I had Fable; I got Vegas 2 without having played any of the Rainbow 6 games, and likewise with GRAW 2; I played though C&C 3 and Kane's Wrath twice without having played any of the others; I got HALO 3 before I did any of the others; I finished God of War 2 & 3 before I finished 1; I got The Two Thrones and PoP 2008 without having played Sands of Time and Warrior Within; and I played Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Fallout 3, and Jedi Outcast before playing their respective precursors.

I've played a few games that are sequels without touching the originals: Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Oblivion, Resident Evil 4 and 5, Diablo 2, and Fable 2.

As long as the game's story isn't completely dependent on the original to lay the groundwork, I feel okay playing it without ever seeing the original.

They're not really connected except in spirit, so that doesn't really count.

Anyway

Street Fighter, Civilization, Guilty Gear, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Assassin's Creed, GTA, Half-Life, and probably some others that aren't occurring to me right now. Although Personally, I don't think it matters unless the games have significant overarching plot, so something like Final Fantasy, Civilization, or GTA doesn't really count at all.

Not counting Fallout 3 (never played the 1st) or Oblivion (daggerfall and the other), I've beaten Saints Row 2 without playing the 1st, Far Cry 2, Just Cause 2 (Hated the first), Halo 3 (1st), Brother In Arms Hells Highway (1st?) and probably more that slip my mind. We all do it I'm sure.

Sometimes, but usually it's just because I find them for cheap, and then I have to look around for the games that were made previously.

A game like Fallout 3 is an exception to this, where I have little intention of owning the earlier games.

I didn't buy it, but I played Uncharted 2 without playing the original and still had tons of fun.

I also bought Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal and Ratchet & Clank Deathlock without buying the first two. And I fucking love Fallout 3 and I've never even played or know anything about the first two.

I can't think of any sequels I've bought that are story related.
Final Fantasy doesn't link, ODST doesn't seem to have much to do with Master Chief's side of the story and Fallout 3, from what I've heard, carries over little more than the creatures and the scenery from the originals.

I did get Gears of War 2, since I heard it was so much better. But then I bought the original afterwards anyway, so that doesn't really count.

Yes, plenty, like Gears 2 and Halo 3. Lots of others too like Oblivion and GTA4, but they're not sequels in the true sense.
