SHIELD?! I need that arm to slap my half dead opponent in comical fashion while he's impaled on my main hand weapon, or better yet, to help me slam my airplane wing sized sword down across someones head!!

Inspired by Kingdom Hearts by any chance?

I always go offense. Usually physical, because using magic in games (Oblivion, for example) is extremely tedious.

Edit: Gah! I just read the entire post! I guess I should do that more often...
That's too funny. Actually, the poll was inspired by my wife starting Kingdom Hearts for the first time and throwing away the staff. I was surprised (love magic in the game), but it was her choice.

I perfer physical offensive, and try to make my character able to wear the heaviest armor made, and give him/her either a two-hander or dual wielding if allowed. I view shield the property of tanks, and a tank, I am not.

I prefer actual evasion skills such as endurance in Demon's Souls because i like to dodge then attack but I like doing magical attacks so i went with magical offensive

I always go with physical offense. The funny thing is, I NEVER use magic in games unless I just have to during the course of the story. I've always hated magic for some reason.

Both physical and magical offense for me. I try to keep defense decent though, lest my character(s) become(s) glass cannon(s).

I prefer the classic shield and morning star combo. But really the shield is more imporatant because wat good is a sword if you get beheaded before you can raise it? And in Kingdom hearts i awlays went with sheild and staff or staff and shield.

Physical Defence all the way. My characters always end up like turtles though, weighed down with as much armour, healing items and repair items as possible.

An offense without strategy is worse than surrender; it's humiliation.
So no, the best defense is not always having a better offense.

That, and some games favor defense over Speed KillZ strategies in their metagame.

I've attempted to play defensively, in multiple genres and for some reason it bores the hell out of me. Tanking in MMO's feels more like managing a daycare center than playing a game, turtling in RTS's feels like waiting for the inevitable hammer to drop and camping in FPS's makes me want to scream when no one comes around the corner for over a minute (I also get paranoid and shoot at the paper effects that randomly move across the screen...).
In RPG's that let me "choose" defense over offense, I can't sacrifice killing things faster for a bit more health or less damage done, I just boost heals.

I like magical offence. You don't need defence if you can pick off enemies at a distance, before they get close. However, in certain games where magic is limited, such as Kingdom Hearts 2, where I can usually do more damage per second with physical attacks and it's a good idea to save MP for Cure and Reflega, I go for physical attack.

Always the shield, and if I can... 2 shields on both arms if I can play efficiently enough. Sometimes I even pretend I'm Captain America and loudly yell "CHARGING STAR!" or "FINAL JUSTICE!"

My life is awesome...

Do I ever? Yes. Do I always? Well no, else all my characters would be the same. Do ever as my first character? ...Probably not. I favour Magic classes, and like to watch things be flayed by arcs of white lightening, but if turning invisible, paralysing the enemy and spawning a horde of monsters to fight for me is considered "defence" I do really like to do that.

MMOs usually dictate for you, and I have chosen Tank classes as my first class in some MMOs I've played. I like being the unassailable wall of stubborn difficulty to kill ^_^

Physical Offense.

Especially in Kingdom Hearts... Started on Brave whatever difficulty, picking Sword and dropping Shield and died my first time when I was in the late-game fights (Like Sephiroth).

Doesn't mean I didn't have some close calls, but actually having to worry about avoiding attacks and healing myself made the game a lot more engaging.

But in purely stat-based games, where I can't just dodge attacks or whatever, I'd go with favoring offense, then defense, then any sort of restorative magic.

I'm generally against offensive magic in any situation. It annoys me to have a little bar that screams "THIS IS HOW MUCH LONGER YOU HAVE UNTIL YOU'RE USELESS" to me.
