sometimes, when I finish the game as the evil scary male I redo it as the EVIL SCARY SEXY female....I also make them as high class as I can while still looking slutty...like a high class hooker politicians use.

Given the choice I play as a bloke because I feel a bit pervy if I'm being a girl.
That's only for character creation type games though. On games with each character having different stats, like fighting games, I have to follow up on whoever I'm good as. Always ends up being girls. Still doesn't sit well with me.

Dangit Super Street Fighter IV, there are so many epic blokes kicking around in your roster, why do you leave me with Ibuki?!

If i have a choice i will always go for the female character.
Since they finally fixed the achievement problem for the exiled prince i am playing dragon age 2 for the 4th time. This also reminded me i suck at thinking up names(usually use the same 3(but since that might class with the picked name of dragon age 1 ...))

It really depends on what looks better, which most of the time, sadly, is the girl. Why are also the girls in video games incredibly sexy but the male models are just hideous? I want to play as a hot guy.

Female body, mustache, british accent, walks with gangsta swagger

Makes me laugh everytime

in the case of ME1/2 I played male shepard for 5 hours then quit and rerolled female cause I cant fucking STAND the male shepard voice acting! >_<
I actually don't know what the male Shepard's voice sounds like because I've only ever played the Mass Effect games with a female Shepard, and that's due to hearing that she has the better voice acting around the time I got the first game. I figured that if I'm going to listen to a character's voice for hours' worth of dialogue scenes, it may as well be the better-acted one.

Mass Effect aside, I think I usually pick female characters when given the option because most games only have male protagonists, so it adds a bit of variety.

male here.

If the game gets me an option 9 times out of 10 i'll play a male character. merely because i like making my character an extension of myself. really helps me get immersed and i love that aspect. really don't get the "i'll roleplay this sort of character" but hey.. to each their own.

If the game doesn't give me an option, like Mirror's Edge, or if it's like a fighting game, then yeah i'll play a female character no prob.
As much as Chun Li is easy on the eyes, I could really fight the best with Crimson Viper.

I'm terrible at anyone besides Lilith in Borderlands. In Fallout NV, I decided to make a female charater, partially because I was bored. She's now the highest level charater I have.

Depends. I like to play caster's as female in RPG games. I also have to admit, If I'm going to be spending the majority of a game looking at a butt, it might as well be a nice butt to look at...

Yes. :)
I also play as male sometimes too. For example, my Mass Effect character I prefer to use is my male one, though I made a female one too. In Fallout I make girls, and in TES it depends, though I usually make tons of characters.

My male female play ratio is like 55/45 thanks mostly to Samus in Super Smash Bros and Daisy in Mario Kart Wii. I often used all female teams for stat boosts in certain games (mostly Marvel Ultimate Alliance) for whatever bonuses it could get me. If playing street fighter or it's ilk I feel that the female characters moves are easier to figure out even though it is probably just my imagination.

Sadly, the gaming population is still mostly male, so game designers figure guys like hot girls( I woud be lying if I said hotness of the character didn't play a factor in who I picked to play as). [only mostly joking]There is a cap on the amount of hotness allowed in one game so as the number of hot women goes up, the number of hot men goes down.[end joke]. I am a straight dude and am a little tired of all the ugly dudes/ grizzled space marines(might just be the genre of games I play).

I like to see all the possible dialogue options in games, so I'll typically play through at least once per gender/race/class.

That still misses a bit, since I don't have time to play through as all possible combinations. But, the way I see it, getting one playthrough of each gender will get all of the important gender specific dialogue trees, and playing through as each class will get you all of the important class dialogue trees, so that covers most of it.

(Although, I do have a very specific pattern. In games like Dragon age, I go with a male mage, a female rogue, and a coin toss to decide the warrior. In games like Fallout, well... it doesn't really matter in that game, so I typically just play as a male.)

Given the choice I pick a female character 99% of the time.

It's not like I can conjure fire with my bare hands anyway, so I don't really see it a factor for immersion.

Like you, if it's fallout, I will pick a boy because I'm trying to represent myself and the game barely changes if you pick a girl. However in story driven games like Mass Effect, on one playthrough i will choose a female character for different character interactions and possibly different quests.

But in all other genres? Yeah, sometimes I'll pick a female character.
